Hey all. Just wanted to say I hope everyone experiencing the after-effects of that power outage is okay. No such event in Baltimore (a brief flicker, but i wonder if it was even related), but then again, considering it's even hotter here than in New York and I'm prone to melting by just breathing, it's probably for the best ;) Makes working those 12 hour days in an airconditioned office bearable. ;)

And this is my first weekend without working! Now I can finally go to the 13th Floor.

The new Xmen Evolution episodes have hit the Apocalypse story arc, and I respect them for it. However, I noted some blatant ripoffs from Stargate (in fact, I think the music was *exactly* the same ;)), but all in all, nice animation and character interaction.

Take care everyone. And for those of you who don't mind Flash and love little addictive games, try http://www.orisinal.com. Nice colors and music, and you can't pull yourself away. I'm stuck on the Tetris-like game called Bauns ;)

Adios

Fire Storm - I have a better suggested topic: reviews of Ride the Wild Winds.

Today was my last day of babysitting my nephew during the daytime, at least for this year!! Yea. He goes back to school on Monday. [There is question about how long before he gets into trouble: my sister-in-law says it will be 1 week, my brother says it will be 2 weeks, I think it's going to be 3 days.]

Lain - <but not quite as good as the two colossal meteors we saw with six inch long tails.> But I can see stars every night because I live in the country.

Imzadi - <YES! California has learned how to export our disasters to other states!> Well, they say that watching California shows the future of the US. Frankly, I hope not.

Green Baron - <I heard Ahnold is going back in time to kill Gray Davis's mother back in the 1950s in order to save California> *starts laughing*

Yesterday, I came up with what W:ME really stands for: Windows:Morons Employed.

Gunjack - <See y'all tomorrow, perhaps.> Welcome back to the house of insanity. Now, share some of the sanity you acquired with those of us in desparate need of it: me.

Ok, here's a stupid policy. At the college, there is a threat to purge students from enrollment unless they have paid *40%* percent of the tution by a said date. There's only 1 problem with that. What about those on financial aid who turn in forms late?

Robby, if the only thing keeping you around is wiping this cr, perhaps that responsibility needs to be delegated to somebody else. [No, I'm not interested because I have too many things on my plate right now.] Also, not counting GXB or Robby [both made a recent post], when was the last time each of the other cr admin made a post (saying something besides "I'm alive" or saying something admin related) here?

Yeah, the power went out here, too. And that put all four of our area's water pumping stations out of commission, as well. They just got the power restored to them about an hour and a half ago... so hopefully by noon I'll be able to take a shower and maybe head downtown for a half day of work.

From CNN: "Officials not sure what caused outage across 9,300 square miles from Detroit to New York to Canada"

About 100x100 miles... the area in New York state is more than that.

Greetings;

Wow stars, what a concept. It takes a power failure to see stars in the city (I feel like I'm in a Simpsons episode).

Anyways the lights are on now where I am, and I can only hope that there on at the University. I lost two experiments, but nothing major.

I do hope that everyone is O.K. and that the power is restored ASAP. Unfortunately for those of you in N.Y. City, they say that you will be among the last regions to come back on the grid. CNN did not give any timeline, but all the power reps. were saying hours-days (Yikes).

Goodnight Everyone

...

Ok, I am freaked out right now. I am used to this place being lit up 24/7, noise all the time...

But it's too damn dark. Too quiet. I get nervous walking down the hall. The only source of light in the building is two floor lamps in my office. (not including the Christmas Tree of server and hub lights).

Knowing that there is no one else in the building...

Not a single thing to do...

Just... here. Alone. All alone...

Not cool. NOT. COOL.

Power came back on around 11:30. Yay!

Very hungry, though. I was too lazy to cook while the power was out (the combination of heat and darkness made me very groggy), and I've been online since it came back, so I'm starving. :(

UPDATE FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK...

Seems there was a cascading poweroutage in the Northeastern USA, and it's affected NY, OH, MI, Onterio Canada, and several other states in that area... last reports say it was due to a power spike from a failing generator in Niagra Falls area that caused the effective shut down of several power centers around the NE seaboard.

Because of this, Siryn our webmistress has been shut off from me and the rest of the staff. This means a possible delay of the launch of Avalon Mists... unless the power up tehre is restored ASAP.

Sounds trival, I know, considering the trouble a lot of hospitals and otehr critical care facilities are facing due to the power loss... but, this affects us all, even if we're not in the affected area.

So, again, until I hear from Siryn when the power comes back, We're expecting a short delay for the reutnr of Avalon Mists... Will have more to say later.

Maintain and Check Six!

London was also quite nice and I'd liek to thank Lain for having em and putting up with my various wacky antics, and I hope Gunjack is enjoying his time back.

Vash: Don’t forget that your perception of time is different because in ‘real life’ it took two years. In Arthur’s time it took about two and a half months. For most of that time, Mary accompanied Arthur because she had no choice but her attitude does soften considerably. Tagging along because she has no choice is a far cry from making a four-year commitment that will end with you being a knight in the service of the alleged future king. Most people would call that a big, fat promotion – especially at fourteen or fifteen years old. It’s also a significant and pretty much irreversible change in Mary’s career path. Her motive shifts in the space of a few episodes from being selfish (finding a cure for her condition) to reasonably selfless (finding a cure for Merlin) to committing herself entirely to the cause – whether she is cured or not, whether Merlin is cured or not. That said, you may have a point about Mary’s squire duties not getting much attention, though her responsibilities are described in “The Mists of Eynhallow”. There is attention paid later in the season, but I guess we could have shown her in squire capacity a bit more in the first episodes after she gains the title. Thanks for the comments though. It’s really interesting (and helpful) to see how this kind of thing is going down.

(As a point of interest, Mary becoming a squire was a plot point that predated “The Mists of Eynhallow”. In fact, that episode was designed to justify Mary’s continued presence in the group when embarking on such a big quest. Guess I dropped the ball there.)

Taleweaver: I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on "Ride the Wild Winds"!

Gside: You realise there’s a new series being released weekly, don’t you? Good grief, I can understand people moaning about production delays during long hiatuses but we aren’t even a third of the way through the new season yet. TGS will release more episodes this year than almost any successful American drama series. I’d call that kicking pretty hard myself.

<<Back from Camp, and I survived for the most part>>: So my ingenious trap built entirely out of spare left socks didn't work?
<<I did learn to carve rock though>>: Take a block of stone and sut ff everyting that doesn't look like an elephant?
<<See y'all tomorrow, perhaps>>: What do you mean perhaps? Amd I going to have to use my new stone elepant as the centerpiece of a new, even better trap?

I'm back from my trip. Dead tired, need a shower, want to kill motorist, but need to draw.
But just for fun,I present the top twelve things I have learned from...

*Road Trip 2003* (no particular order, it's jsut as they came to me)

1. When borrowing someone else's car first make sure all the stickers and legal stuff is already up to date so you don't have to pay for them.

2. Don't drive for more than 12 hours at a time when alone, you screw up your entire digestive system. (This added onto last year's don't watch EVA before road trips)

3. A set of windshield wipers that actually work well and don't smear would be great especiall since this year is so far the wettest summer in 80 YEARS.

4. Florida drivers can't drive in the rain. (which sucked considering my blurred vision from smuging wipers)

5. Florida drivers and more so tourist will panic stop at the sight of orange barrels in the ditch, slowign everyone down even if there is no construction.

6. Jumper cables are our friend (incase borrowed car has strange draining problem and is dead after sitting two days)

7. Pack tweezers, they always have use.

8. I-10 though Louisiana sucks, no nice way to say it, it sucks. always has construction and is patch and rough and the speed traps drop to 45 MPH :P

9. Battleships are cool.

10. People who drive across the country in gas guzzling Lincoln Navigators have too much damn money.

11. There are worse things in life than a Father-in-law who tells bad jokes all the time. ( I did get free knives and they did pay for food)

12. Though there is a spiritual feeling of accomplishment after traveling across half the country alone, I feel it better to save time and effort to fly than deal with crazy drivers and attempts to sleep in rest stops with the humidity. (maybe if I was riding a Harley I'd feel differently, oh well)

Back from Camp, and I survived for the most part. No rolling SUVs down hills, or breaking my ankles performing the Knave Without this time. I did learn to carve rock though, and I had some fun with .22 brass and flaming kerosene while trying to cast a crucifix with improvised materials. I even made some new friends. Ride the Wild Winds - sounds like the title of an old Western Movie...

Woke up about 3 am to my sister screaming about a bat flying around in her bedroom. Not a HUGE deal, we'll just shut the door, put some towels underneath (they can fit through that crack, we've had 2 bats before, and one escaped the cellar that way), and worry about it in the morning. Problem? Cleo just came in! So we have the door open a smidge, and trying to call her. But we can't see her. We took an chance about 10 minutes later, and ran in, I got the cat, and she opened the window to let it fly out.

We don't know if it did, we're waiting for my dad to come home and rescue us (besides, the bat will be sleeping somewhere if he's still in there). I know it didn't go out right away, I heard some banging at the door, most likely the bat trying to get out. I highly doubt it was the cats. Cleo MIGHT have seen it, but she wouldn't bang against the door to play with a creature she couldn't see. Even if either cat wanted to get into her room (she keeps her door open at night, and they occasionally come in a snooze on her bed), they'd meow (especially Lola).

The big question is, how did it get in? Before, the others came though the chimney, which is connected to the cellar, and from there, upstairs (the first one sat in the fireplace for a bit, and I saw him close up. It was a good thing we recently replaced the door to the fireplace with glass gates, instad of the removable wire covering). But we've had issues with squirrels this year, so we got the chimney capped (it was before, but not it's TOTALLY capped). Unless there IS a small space where they can get in, it's still confusing. A bat wouldn't crawl into just any small crack.

And before you all worry, the only kind of bat around here are the little fruit bats. Only worry about them is any disease they might carry, no need to worry about it killing out pets with killer bites!

Hey everyone! I was just searching through the picture archive. I was looking for some good pics of lex. But I noticed that a drawing I did for TGS some time back for Season 3 Gargoyles was labled as being drawn by Robby. I don't really care that much, but if anyone knows how to change that... or who I should let know just... um.. well let me know:) No biggy though. I'm just sure that Robby wouldn't want to be stuck with that lable! He's a much better artist then me *chuckles* Welp, off to look for more pics! My emails posted if anyone wants to use it:)

Silverbolt> Have you seen the trailer for Scary Movie 3? ;)If not, click my name--there's a scene that's relevant to your post.

Ed> I think one problem with Mary being squired is that it took so long to happen. The other "knights" were recruited right after they met Arthur. Granted, they were all a little older than Mary and seemed more capable of helping him out than a young girl. But Mary has shown herself to be brave and resourceful from the start. And it's not like Arthur has so many allies that he can be choosy. He should be recruiting as many people to his cause as he can find (which seems to be how he picked up the knights he has so far. Or did he just decide that after reaching a certain number, he'd stop looking?). Again, I think it would have helped had Arthur been shown considering 'enlisting' Mary's help long before now. She may be accompanying them in hopes for a cure (for herself and later for Merlin), but she's also sharing their food, their company, and their adventures. As people already pointed out, Mary was depicted as being 'part of the gang' long before now. She was a knight in all but name. Then after months of being their traveling companion, Arthur finally decides to show Mary some recognition, and she's made to be his lowly squire. I almost think it would have been more interesting to keep her as the 'insider-but-outsider' of the group. What makes it worse is that Mary also seems to be playing the role of a subserviant lackey; no longer the tough independent spirit she once was. Her new rank hasn't even been shown to serve a purpose in the stories thus far; she has no duties or perks. It's just used as an excuse to let her tag along, when she never needed a reason before. But then as you said, it's Arthur's new quest and he gets to make the rules. That still doesn't make it a good excuse (or to put it more accurately, that still doesn't mean we have to like it). ;P

16th day with rain in it in a row -- We tied the record today... I do not know what is up with the weather -- More rain than you can shake a stick at here with the jet stream diving way south...

Of course the jet stream is a zero-sum game -- since it is so very far south here, it is way north in europe and they are getting heat enough to fry eggs...

*sigh* would you guys like to have Simon Cowell back? He's come back to judge the new series of Pop Idol over here and in just one episode he's already reduced many people to tears.

"That's a stage song, you don't even deserve to be on stage."

Still it was funny that the woman he said that too had said before hand that she would have plenty to say back to him. She was completely speechless so that was funny... even though she cried...

Well my classes are finally done. Now I get a week off and start up again. I'm just glad that it's a regular semester and not a summer schedule.

Green Baron- Wow, you're really going to be moving around for awhile. I hope you enjoy it. After being home for a few months I'm kinda getting the itch to travel. What am I saying? I felt that when I first got here. I hope you get seperate rations. I stopped going to the Dining Fac. when I saw rodents.

Fire Storm- I condolences about you dog.

Bud Clare> <<Why? Why? Why? It's so bizarre>>: I write it off by being created before they got a handle on the GUI thing, and such odd effects are a result of trying to tack it on later.
<<Glad it's not just me>>: There's always something to fight a holy war over in computing.

Fire Storm> <<It was the self status checking>>: Well, it doesn't look like there's anything in there to actually get it to display anything, and you didn't put a semicolon after the return.
<<it worked.... but not after I uploaded the pages>>: You changed from double quotes to single quotes, and I still don't see anything calling for something to get displayed. But then, I haven't done JavaScript, and am just now looking at tutorials to try and see what might be wrong. Still, it doesn't look like the problem is with putting it in the php, just the mouseover itself.

Hi all!

I’ve been away from the Internet for a while so I’m only now able to catch up on some of the ‘Pendragon’ reviews and discussions I missed. Thanks so much to everyone who reviewed “The Mists of Eynhallow”. Here are some replies to a few points mentioned, although I’m afraid I’m going back a few weeks.

***Spoilers for Season 4 “Pendragon” so far***

(Mary’s squiring)
I was really surprised that this twist wasn’t all that well received by some. I think the notion that some kind of latent misogyny made Arthur propose that Mary needed to be squired before accompanying him on the quest is quite bizarre, and I don’t really think it’s well founded in the text when there are numerous reasons, some only practical. Consider the timeline: Mary joins the group in the summer, May or June off the top of my head. “The Mists of Eynhallow” takes place in October. In that period, she tagged along with Arthur by necessity while he was on the run, hung around a bit at the back end of season 3, and then persuaded Arthur to let her come along to Avalon because she had a legitimate interest: her cure. The Grail quest is an entirely different matter. You can’t just quest for the Holy Grail when you feel like it. It’s a commitment. It’s also not Mary’s quest, but Arthur’s. His rules. It was crucial to clarify Mary’s position within the group before the quest went any further. I guess I could have written that scene to make it a bit clearer but to be honest I never anticipated anyone to have any problems with the squiring issue. Mary seems so obviously suited to being a knight and at her age she would be a squire.

Graymonk: I really enjoy some of the points you make your reviews. Answering the questions you posed for “Eynhallow”:

The archaeologists were surprised to see Mary because they knew Nigel Sefton. Apart from the fact that he’s an important member of the government, his name was also probably brought to the fore during the Buckingham Palace incident at the end of last season.

I think you’re right that Mary’s more practical (and stubborn) personality helped her through. Also, she’s had a shorter life than the others and so there were fewer memories to emerge.

You’re probably right that the resolution didn’t quite work. My idea was that there wasn’t actually a ghost at all, but the residual frustration of the monk that wasted his life watching the Grail turned it into a sort of ghostly hot spot that was ultimately destroyed when Arthur took up the quest for the Grail from the lost monk. This was a bit lost in the rush to focus on the Grail matters in hindsight and having the monk appear in Arthur’s vision – Eynhallow’s memory – just made things very confusing. Sorry about that.

It’s been ages since I did the research on this episode but the ruins are real, and they were probably built on an earlier site. I forget where I got the notion of the monks building there to view the Grail and/or Jesus (Lydia stops short of saying it in the story of course). I’m reasonably sure that there was some grounding for the sightings there. I figure the Grail did appear before the monk long ago and tormented him. He wasn’t worthy only because he stayed to admire it and insisted that he wasn’t worthy. If he’d gone out and made himself worthy then he would have claimed the Grail. That’s the tragedy. It was designed to counterpoint Arthur’s plight, but as I say that side of things kind of got lost.

And yes, it’s a reasonable conclusion to draw that one of the seven people on Eynhallow at the time had encountered a vampire at some point in their life, and the experience was traumatic.

(Dating stories)
I didn’t notice that there weren’t really any dates on the stories so far, myself. The next couple of episodes will be dated. The dates become quite important for reasons that will become obvious. ‘Pendragon’ tends to involve travelling between episodes so obviously time gaps will often depend on how much is necessary. Some episodes will be a few days apart, some several weeks.

Kaioto: I really like your assessment of Arthur’s leadership skills – or apparent lack thereof just lately. I know when working on this season (or at least the material released so far) I really felt like Arthur was working himself into a depression after his setbacks so far in the modern world, slowly forgetting the qualities which made him such an important figure in the first place.

(Arthur’s finances)
I figure he’s being put up by the London clan, and probably lives off the generosity of his friends – notably Jennifer, Marter and Merlin. That’s worked so far, but it won’t necessarily be the case forever. To be honest, I don’t think Arthur’s finances have been all that relevant so far. They may be in future.

Mercord: Of course, just because a Christian looks for the Grail (and thus the Grail associates itself frequently with Christian religious locations) doesn’t mean the Grail is Christian.

<<a proper delete key>>: When in X, I don't think I had that problem, only in telnet did I have to remember to use del instead of backspace.
<<emacs is all... clunky>>: "Some EMACS versions running under window managers iconify as an overflowing kitchen sink, perhaps to suggest the one feature the editor does not (yet) include. Indeed, some hackers find EMACS too heavyweight and baroque for their taste, and expand the name as `Escape Meta Alt Control Shift' to spoof its heavy reliance on keystrokes decorated with bucky bits. Other spoof expansions include `Eight Megabytes And Constantly Swapping' (from when that was a lot of core), `Eventually `malloc()'s All Computer Storage', and `EMACS Makes A Computer Slow' (see recursive acronym)". Oddly enough, the Jargon File doesn't have much bad to say about vi, other than it having been crufted together ("To throw together something ugly but temporarily workable. Like vt. kluge up, but more pejorative"), and the whole thing about confusing newbies about the command/input modes thing.

Fire Storm> <<It WOULD give people more to read>>: maybe it would feel like more.
<<Am I supposed to remember details like facts?>>: I like to.
<<Any clue how to make make an onmouse over (or similar command) work while embedded in a PHP "while" statement?>>: The way I'd do it would be something like:
<?php
$db=mysql_connect("localhost","tgs");
mysql_select_db("tgsdb",$db);
$result=mysql_query("select * from stories",$db);
while($row=mysql_fetch_array($result))
{
//make link
printf("/*put in moseover code*/");
//other stuff you want to do in the loop
}
?>

GRAYMONK - Yep, that was a reference to the similarities that I'd noticed between Rory in "The Hound of Ulster" and the Marvel Comics take on Thor. (At least, the initial, Donald Blake version.) I might add that I asked Greg Weisman about it once, and he agreed that there's a similarity there (if anything, he confessed that he was afraid that there was too strong a similarity and if he ever got to bring back "Gargoyles" and Rory returned in it, he'd like to make Rory/Cuchulain less like the Marvel version of Thor).

The really fun part about writing it was that it was a context where it would work. We could safely mention Thor since he's a figure from Norse mythology rather than an invention of Marvel Comics, and thus in the public domain, and since Surtur was from Norse mythology, Thor's name would be appropriate here. (Although Thor would actually have been more appropriate if it had been the Midgard Serpent who'd shown up instead. :) ).

As for the story of Bran the Blessed, you can find it in the Second Branch of the Mabinogion. (The most readily available edition of the Mabinogion, I believe, is the Penguin Books translation by Jeffrey Gantz.)

Graymonk- The Bad: Maybe king Bran only wanted to comfort and reassure his people, who were under constant threat.

I didn't think the Magus was a halfling. As for human mages, they are probably under orders by the Illuminati to stay hidden from the general public. Since the Illuminati control the world they would insure that only people loyal to them become mages, of any sort.

Who says they carried them all the time. They could have put the weapons away because the Unseelie war was over.

Surtur was definitely a loser without personality.

oh crap, another posting screw up, Heaven help me I don't know where my brain has gone today.

********Spoilers for Dinas Bran********

THE GOOD: -First of all, I quite enjoyed the story of King Bran and his battle with the Irish, does anyone know the name of that story, or of a book or website where I might find the original text? Its piqued my interest.

- The Merlin/Griff conversation. I had honestly never considered Griff's POV of Season 3. The reminder of Griff's seperation from his mate was a nice touch. With this scene and the council meeting from last ep Griff is starting to become interesting, something he never was in the cartoon. Good work Todd.

-I liked Merlin's "I honestly don’t know," ... "I’ve never been here before" line. Like Griff's marriage, it's nice to be reminded Merlin's not omnicsient.

-I was ecstatic to see Mary's skepticism. I laughed out loud when she smacked herself for still being surprised at meeting someone 1400 years old and I was ROTFLMAO when she shot down Talensien's accusations. The Ben Grimm aspects of Mary's personality are one of the reasons why I like her so much.

-The battle between Rory and Surtur. Surtur was a refreshingly challenging opponent. the battle itself was exciting and kept me guessing. I admit my paranoia about Dulci and Leba's fates may have played a role in that (I thought Dulci was a goner for sure when she got hit by that rock). In fact, all the battle scenes in this season so far have been quite riveting. Todd's action sequences seem to have imrpoved exponentially (and Ed! musn't forget his wonderful madcap chaos in "Mists").

-Arhtur's repentance before Talenien. Art could have taken the easy road and made excuses (indeed Sir Baudwin made a rather convincing arguement for why the head should be dug up) but instead he owned up to it, admitted his true reasons, and offered to do pennance. Arthur's always seemed more inclined to show remorse for his misdeeds than Merlin and that might be the factor that convinces the Grail to help them.

THE BAD: -While I enjoyed the story of King Bran i didn't understand Bran's reasoning. Why did he think his petrified head would defend Britain? I realise its part of the legend but there was no in-universe explanation. Was it just arrogance? Was he trying give his people hope and/or comfort after he was gone.

- I am starting to get really sick of halflings. Not the Unsilee engineered kind, I am eagerly awaiting the continuation of their story. I'm talking about the natural kind, they're starting to feel as ubiquitous as mutants in the Marvel universe; Umbriel's a halfling, Morgana's a halfling, Nimue's a halfling, Ra's a halfling, Circe's a halfling, Magus is a halfling, Talensien etc. And that's still leaving out cannon halflings like Fox and Alexander. The only really powerful human mages we've seen are Lord Srocerer, Archmage and the Japanese guy who helped the Ishimurans in "Darkest Hour."

-I forget if it was Mecord or Vashokda but someone brought up the point that Leba and Dulci didn't seem to be armed in this story. I though season 2 established that Leba carried a quarter staff and Dulci was an acher (Iron tipped arrows probably would have helped against Surur) Are they still carrying their weapons and if not, why not?

-Speaking of Surtur, while he may have been an entertaining sparring partner for Rory he didn't really display much of a personality.

THE MISC:

IN JOKE - Was Merlin's Comment about it being a pity Rory's
alter ego not being Thor a joke about how similar Rory was to Marvel's Thor in the TV series?

To sum up: a terrific installment in what has already been a promising season. 9 decapitated human heads out of 10.

Greetings to all, eh?

I now report to you from Lain's home in London, and now to start the story of the Green Baron tour:

Tuesday, August 5-- One day after my 26th birthday, I arriev at Rhein Main AB where I spend the night in the Airport's USO Lounge (gotta love them), courtesy of SSG Josef Smith (he ain't a Mormon though, even with that name).

I of course posted form there. I'd post more, but the USO computers had a time limit.

Wednesday, August 6-- My MAC flight (and thank God it is not a C-130) takes off at 3:25 AM EST, though it's 9:30 where I was. Movies provided are X2 and Shanghai Knights. Sleep opportunities are rare thanks to small children making constant noise (I now support putting small chidlren in kennel area with pets). US Air Force is greta way to travel otherwise, as long as it's a Commercial type jet.

prior to noon, my flight lands in Baltimore Airport so I take a long journey to Southwest's part of the terminal to confirm my flight to Buffalo (why did I fly into Baltimore to go to just go to Buffalo, that's the Army way), whcih was one hour.

After that, a nice couple on the flight offer me a ride to the Greyhound station, though in thi smad dash of GB's personal season of 24, I just barely miss the 4:30 pm bus to London, but ctahc a 7:15 one. On the bus I have a layover in Toronto and finally arrive at London, where I am a bit early, so I gea cab to take me to Lians house, but she's one her way to see me, so I take teh cab back to try and get her and I finally catch her, though this remidns me of the valuable lesson of staying with aplan. From 3:30 EST on 6 Aug to 330 EST on 7 Aug, maybe this can be a 24 plot :)

7 August (after long sleep), Lain and I see London. I alos get a needed shwoer, since I last got one on the fifth, as the airport showers were non-functioning. I did however, wash my upper body thoorughly with the latrine's sink.

More of the GB North American tour will be psotsed as time commences.

Mooncat> I think it would be more interesting to see how the myth changes to meet the needs and wants of the audience at the time. The magic and completing the impossible task is common to all kingmaker myths. It establishes divine right. Same as the scion device to establish legitimacy.

Changing the events to fit sensibilities and personal agendas isn't new, but why and how they become part of the canon of the myth can be interesting. And it doesn't necessarily follow direct lines of logic.

White washing or rationalization? If someone wanted to "rationalize" Arthur's legend, they'd take ALL the magic out of it, which includes Merlin as a magic user, Excalibur as a magical sword, Nimue and Morgan Le Fay as magic users and lots of other chunks. Rationalization would take out the idea that Arthur is "destined" to be a great king and Merlin's motivation for getting involved out of anything but pure politics. That the small points of "consent" during sex are the ones twitched though, which really has nothing to do with magic, seems to me to be more of an excusing of a man's bad behavior in regards to adultery and rape. True rationalizing would have Igraine sneaking out to Uther if they were going to have consensual sex, instead of a big disguise of Uther as Gorlois of all people, to see her in Gorlois's castle. If it was mutual love, why wouldn't Igraine have run off with Uther, instead of him popping in just to bed her than running off the morning after? It's more likely the 20th century altering of the legend to make Igraine a knowing and willing party isn't rationalization, but sanitation to make Arther's conception "nicer" than rape. A hero conceived by rape? Tsk. Let's make it really a lovestory, and Igraine was chucking her fidelity to her husband of many years, who'd already fathered three daughters on her, to boink the king she's smuggled into her castle disguised as her husband because he's her true love. That kind of revision isn't more rational, it's just more paletable (sp?).

Legend aside, I wouldn't mind seeing an examination on the reality of Arthur, and the people and events that the legend was based on. Any real life archeological/anthropological investigation of that going on right now?

CHRISTINE - Actually, the cable program didn't invent the different take on Uther and Igraine; I've seen it in many modern-day Arthurian novels, such as Mary Stewart's "The Crystal Cave". I think that it originated due to the 20th century development of writing the legend in a way that rationalized all the fantasy and magical elements. Igraine being deluded into thinking that Uther is really her husband is believable if Uther's disguise was a magical shape-shifting spell, but if you go for the notion that magic doesn't work in the Arthurian world, then you have to go for more mundane disguise measures which wouldn't be so likely to deceive Igraine (particularly at such close quarters), and so the writers go for the notion of Uther and Igraine being secretly in love. (The big disadvantage, of course, is that it changes Igraine from a virtuous woman who will only sleep with somebody other than her husband if she mistakenly believes it to be her husband into a knowing adulteress.)

They've also done rationalizations on other parts of the story, including the Sword in the Stone (and most of the rationalizations there are very unconvincing - such matters as having the sword lying flatwise across the stone, not stuck in anything, which raises the issue as to why everybody was so amazed when Arthur picked it up. Mary Stewart's "The Hollow Hills" contains the only decent rationalization of the Sword in the Stone that I've come across yet.)

Hey, folks. Long time no see and all that!

I thought it rather interesting that the show on Arthur the other night didn't have Uther disguising himself as her husband to trick Igraine, but to trick everyone else because they were really secretly in love. Sounded like a sanitizing job to me ;)

So, hey, anybody got the inside scoop on Avalon Mists? I've heard rumors that it's coming back to life!

Imadi - <Just thought I'd let everyone know that I'm in Taiwan right now livin' it up on Apple's dollar.> Hmm. DPH is wondering how bad of a tourist trap you're in.

Mooncat - <If Elisa married Goliath, and Proteus took Goliath's form and went to Elisa while Goliath was fighting with Proteus's team of thugs, disguised himself as Goliath and bedded Elisa, that wouldn't be rape, by your definition?> DPH decided to go to the dictionary for a definition of rape and of all the terms used in that definition. The sticky part is the definition of "force": "To compel through pressure or necessity". Yea, you're right logically. DPH wonders another question, though. During medievil times, was it possible for Igraine to say "no" to her husband?

Back to my old image!

Cleo (out kitten, who is about 3 1/2 months old now), is becomming a big pain the ass. We have to be VERY careful when going outside or letting our other cat out, since she's quick and runs to the door when she hears it open (it creaks loudly). And her fetching abilty, though fun to watch, makes it more difficult. We throw her one of her many toys (kept on the cat bed that the cats rarely use, and she playes with them like everyday on her own), but she's wuick to get them, and will bring them back to you! It's especially hard for me to take my walks I do about 2-3 times a day, since I'm the one she tends to bring her toys to (despite the fact that she ignores me for everything else except food).

The house had finally stopped smelling of wet cat (it wasn't that bad, but enough to notice). Cleo fell into the toilet on Monday (I wasn't there, but My mom said she was laughing histerically, even though she was pissed at the mess she made), and Lola caught caught in a sudden horrendous downpoor on Tuesday, and took a good 10 hours to dry off (she has a very fine and thick coat, plus she was in the about 4 feet in the direct path of one of the vents. We have central air, and when it comes on, those fans are powerfull and cold, which probably didn't help the drying process much).

Now I'll go back to watching what I have of the Kim Possible epsiodes I'm downloading.

Staring as my image for today...MYSELF! (yeah, I wish)

After many hours of downloading, I know have all 3 Avalon epsiodes and Awakening part 1 on my computer. Now I can watch them whenever (My mom has a tendacy to take over the TV when I'm using it, I have one in my room, but it's a piece of crap that's close to 20 years old, and no VCR. Plus I have a tendacy to rewind and re-watch scenes and watch them frame by frame, which pisses everyone off. I can take me over an hour to watch a 20 minute show...)

I'm LOADED on work hours. I was supposed to work only 3 days (about 21 hours), but my boss screwed up the scedule, and they needed replacements, so I'm up to 39 this week now. Next week I get 4 days (27 hours). I usually only get about 16-18 hours a week. They want to give me hours before I go off to school in 3 weeks (everyone else who is leaving is begging for them, so they thought it only fair to give me some of that share. Plus I've been there the longest of the part-timers, so I tend to get first priority when more hours are available.

Just thought I'd pop in. You can all go back to talking about Pendragon now.

One thing I've often wondered (rhetorical question): Has anyone who's met Arthur (talking Garg universe here, duh) started spewing out Monty Python & the Holy Grail quotes? (Run away!!) I can totally imagine Matt Bluestone doing that...and subseqently, Arthur's utter confusion about what the hell he's talking about...

Mecord> Arthur run the Illuminati? Hmmm... It is an intriguing idea, but I doubt. King Arthur and Merlin prefer to deal with moral absolutes. Doubtful they could deal with the gray world of power and politics. There are complexities Arthur refuses to acknowledge and that his friends shield him from. Its great that he's so idealistic, but ideals have limited effectiveness.

****TGS Comments****
I have to agree with Vashkoda on one particular, it's odd for any "knight" of Arthur's to be unarmed. Though Griff usually fights without weapons and during the day Mary can't be said to be harmless. As for why Mary and Arthur went to the hill alone in the begining, it makes sense to me. The other's were setting up camp and Arther wanted to inspect the ruins, so of course his squire would accompany him.

I liked this episode because we get to see more interaction with the other characters. Dulcinea's injury makes for a problem on the quest. I wonder if they'll drag her along still or continue without her. I do wonder how exactly they're moving from one site to another. Do they hitch a ride or something? England's not huge but it does take precious time to move from one one spot to another. Rory's loosing control again also makes for an interesting problem. Hopefully they'll find a way to resolve a few of these problems later on.

The Duval Question: I've been thinking about Duval and I'm wondering if he created the Illuminati as he suggested or simply joined and took over. I had alway's had the impression (maybe from the pyramid that's their symbol) that it was more ancient than 500 A.D.. Also, if the Illuminati is even loosely based on Arthurian ideals and is in control of a large chunk of the world's governments, then at least some amount of balance and good is likely being done. Then consider that Arthur is supposed to arrive at some future date to save britain or (as is suggested several times) the world from some threat. Well, what if the illuminati crumbles? Duval is killed or overthrown and the different factions divide and fight for their own shamble of power. Duval saw Camelot and Britain fall when Arthur left. Maybe he sought immortality because he feared (correctly) that the same would happen to the Illuminati if he died. Considering the world wide chaos that would result, it might be just the occasion for the Once and Future King to arrive with a fresh band of knights to sieze and reorder what had once been the Illuminati. Just think, As head of the Illuminati Arthur would be a King. He could weed the corruption out of the society and run things his way. Thus the world is saved.

Well, it's an idea, and would make a good story.

TGS: Dinas Bran> I always like those fics with flashback moments in them. Though I must say, the line "when I die, you must cut off my head, and then dip it once in the waters of my cauldron" was just...*eew*. I do like how it turned out being the Cauldron of Life, and how Bran's stone head was compared to a gargoyle's. I wish there had been more discussion with Taliesan about whether the head really worked, considering the Romans had invaded before Arthur had it removed. Though my reaction to that flashback scene was, "Arthur--you are an *idiot*". I wanted to kick the man. Still, I don't think it's reason enough for Taliesan to have held a grudge all these centuries, especially if perhaps deep down he *had* realized the head hadn't worked against the Romans. Though being versed in magic, shouldn't he have been able to sense whether it worked or not? I like how he and Leba shared a 'bard moment'. =) I wish he could have given her a parting gift, like his magic harp or something, to make her a bit more useful to the group.

I am a bit surprised Arthur went alone with Mary on the hill, and later with just Mary and Leba. I suppose this is one area where he's adjusted to the 21st century way of thinking (or perhaps he's just showing off again, making the point that he doesn't need any strong warriors to protect him, and can in fact be trusted to keep two women safe at the same time as he's battling with a mysterious foe). To be honest, I'm not sure what good either Mary or Leba would be. Dulcinea didn't really do anything but get hurt when she was with Rory. In wolf form, Mary has her claws and fangs, but as a human, what good is she? None of them carry weapons except Arthur and Rory. I think that's a little ridiculous.

One last thing--during their discussion about the campfire, I really don't like how Rory put down Merlin by telling him, "I think that you’d better be leavin’ this to the grown-ups". Excuse me? Cuchulain may be old, but Rory's just a reincarnation, whereas Merlin himself has lived over fifteen hundred years. Show some respect!

Jacal> <<it's considered high treason to not like firefighters these days>>: Not just nowadays, it's usually been considered good to think nice things of people involved in emergency services (fire, police, EMT/medical). Enough so that an elaboration is usually expected if stating otherwise. E.g. They're a bunch of slobs who treat it as a boy's club, getting drunk all the time and not taking it seriously.

Fire Storm> <<just forget what I said>>: I thought as much.
<<they are a bunch of short (2-3 scroll pages) worth of text>>: I find 2-3 page downs a bit short. Maybe 10 or so, depending on font size, of course.
<<I am leaning towards 1 large story>>: Then go for that. I won't be doing mine piecemeal, if I ever finish it.

Gabriel> <<Gabe needs money>>: That's what you get for bailing out Lain.

Imzadi> <<Been here a whole 12 hours and haven't caught the SARS yet>>: Give it time. And I'm sure there are many othere diseases avaiable for you to catch.

Oy, 'scuse my absence, last week was rather busy and excessively painful.

Now for some long overdue comments;

AIRWALKER - I wrote <<We may know Duval is Lancelot and that the Illuminati really are interested in the Grail but Arthur doesn't>>,

to which you responded <<Actually he does; Duval clearly admits to him that he's Lancelot and that they Illuminati are interested in the Grail. Arthur is doubtful about the Duval's claim to being Lancelot but Duval doesn't try to keep it a secret. He's pretty open about the entire thing.>> I was referring to Arthur's doubts when I said "Arthur doesn't." Arthur had seen nothing to corroborate Duval's claims. We know from Duval's scene with Nimue in "Iris, Lily, Rose" that he is Lancelot and the council scene in "Choices 1" established that they were after the Grail. But Arthur wasn't there for either of these scenes, he had little reason to believe Duval's claims. IIRC Mary even suggested Duval could be an imposter using information Arthur might have divulged under the memory drug in "Iris..." to fool Arthur. From Arthur's perspective, Duval could simply be an imposter and his offer a scheme to capture Griff.

<<(I'm not even sure why Griff is along considering that waiting for him in daylight slows them down considerably.)>>

Granted what I am about to say doesn't apply to this particaular story, but I think its rather sensible to bring Griff along. Merlin's vision in "Choices" implied that Arthur's knights would be facing a great many supernatural threats in the course of this quest. He'll probably need someone with metahuman physical abilities to stand a chance against such creatures. Arthur's entourage is currently comprised of two humans who are formidible hand to hand combatants but still merely human, a teenaged girl with enchanced senses but no combat training, and a sorcerer who may be powerful now but will probably grow progressively weaker as the quest goes on. Of all Arthur's allies only Roary has substantial super powers but they are unreliable because he can't control himself in a warp-spasm. If Arthur is going to be facing something along the lines of the Kraken or another stone dragon, having someone with super strength, sharp talons and wings might come in handy.

<<I would personally add to your list that Griff could be a possibility>> I don't think so. Griff is a cannon character. as far as I know TGS has only ever killed two cannon characters, Renard (who Greg was going to kill off anyway) and Sora (who IIRC at the time of "Darkest Hour" was a walk on character in one episode with a single line). Beyond that, Griff has a function in the PENDRAGON cast, he's the muscle and second in command. Griff's safe as far as I can tell.

LURKING ECHO - <<Banshee (who seems to have inexplicably disappeared)>> Good point, I wonder if we'll find out what she's been up to this season.

GREG BISHANSKY - <<Dammit, you just killed a story idea I had for a future season. You know, the one I mentioned a while back about a zombie Jesus rising from the grave to feast upon the flesh of the living? It would have been a great story too ;)>> I thought Todd only said TGS wouldn't do stories about Jesus and Mary having kids, I didn't see anything nixing zombification. That WOULD be a great story! C'mon TGS, PENDRAGON SEASON 5: KING ARTHUR Vs. ZOMBIE JESUS CHRIST, it would be the best fanfic ever! :)

<<in TGS, Demona and Andrea are NOT lesbian lovers. Never were, never will be. Though Andrea herself is a lesbian (there was a big clue to this in a season 2 story)>> Is that Unsilee halfling Candy her ex-girlfriend? I vaguely remember Candy making reference to a female ex named Andy in a season 2 ep.

RENDEMONA - <<yo, what up>> Not much, the ceiling, overhead light fixture...

MOONCAT - That is a good point. (I might add that I wasn't trying to justify Uther here; I merely thought that we were using the wrong word here. I certainly find seduction through deception to be a crime alongside rape.)

One interesting tidbit about Igraine: Malory emphasizes in his work about her being quite intelligent. In his work, she's the one who picks up on Uther lusting after her before Gorlois does (in Geoffrey of Monmouth, it's Gorlois who does that first), and also in Malory, Igraine works out, after learning about her husband's death and everything about it, that he was slain before the man looking like Gorlois ever got to Tintagel - but deliberately says nothing about it. It seems that Malory had a strong respect for female intelligence and perceptiveness.

Gside: <I am referencing the "sponsor a vegetarian">
Ah... I see...
<I'm talking about EMACS>
Yeah, just forget what I said.
<I'll take it how I can get it, but I get annoyed by people who don't finish their incremental stories after releasing most of them.>
Oh yeah. That sucks.
I am just curious because I have been reading Darwin's stories in the GFW, and they are a bunch of short (2-3 scroll pages) worth of text, and he has been releasing them daily. I was just wondering if it would be better for me to chop my larger stories (50+ word pages) into smaller chunks or to release them as one large story (I am leaning towards 1 large story).

Siryn: <submissions by the 15th. I know its majorly last minute>
I plan on making it with at least one article.

Firefighters: My uncle is a firefighter, so I of course am biased towards firefighters.

I don't know. Do doctors walk knowingly into a dangerous situation? No, patients are usually brought to them. Sorry, I do nitpick about respect for firefighters because my dad is one of them - a volunteer. The volunteer fire departments have to scrounge around for money to keep equipment maintanced and have to keep hoping for volunteers to join to fight. Those people don't fight fires for the money. Doctors get well paid for their efforts; maybe that's why firefighters are held in higher esteem than doctors. Also, fire fighters strive to improve response time; how many people have to sit and wait for the doctor?

Todd -- I think Uther's actions are a lot closer to Rape than Seduction. If he'd worn any face *other* than Gorlois' when taking Igraine to bed, it might be considered seduction, but by appearing as her lawful lord and husband Gorlois, Igraine did not have the option of NOT having sex with the man she believed to be her legitimate spouse.

If Elisa married Goliath, and Proteus took Goliath's form and went to Elisa while Goliath was fighting with Proteus's team of thugs, disguised himself as Goliath and bedded Elisa, that wouldn't be rape, by your definition? Then when Elisa is made aware that the male who "seduced" her was not her husband and that her husband was in fact fighting and dying while she was being "seduced"... Well Proteus didn't "force" her to have sex, did he? So it wouldn't be rape, would it? He only "seduced" her? Somehow I don't think she'd feel this was any less a violation of her than conventional rape.

Uther went to Tintagle with the sole purpose to have sexual relations with a woman who would not willingly have them with him. Even if no physical force is used, the fact Igraine would not willingly have sex with a man other than her lawfully wedded husband pretty much defines Uther's act as rape.

Lack of violence does not absolve a rapist of his crime. Otherwise every person who was given a roofie and their ability to say "no" taken away from them would be considered a person who'd been "seduced" and not raped. By appearing as Igraine's husband, Uther forced her into a sexual relation she would not have had *willingly* with any man except her lawful husband. That the "force" used was trickery instead of a physical blow doesn't make the fact Igraine would not willingly lay with Uther any less of a rape.

Off to figure out the workings of my new Sony Clie now... This is cool... Now if I can only suss out how to Hot Synch *^_^*

i know, i know... it's considered high treason to not like firefighters these days. but i'm sorry, i don't. now before i'm asked the question, "what if your house was burning down and your family was trapped inside?" let me say this... alota people don't like hospitals... alota people don't like doctors, did these people and facilities contribute any less during 9-11? i'm just sayin that they are still treated like crap, no one seems to care, talk bad about a firefighter and people are ready to go patriotic on ur ass. granted doctors generally don't have a life threatening job, but they are left with the clean up and aftercare of... say.. a burn victim pulled out of a fire, and in my opinion that takes more concern and is more stressful than the 2 and half minutes it takes than to storm in a place, pick sumone up, and run them back out. i'm just sayin.......

anyway, hey yall, love ya! LoL
