Not bad, but it's to bad Professor Fenn. Oh well, at least Arthur did what was right and shut down that quack the White Knight's operation. It might have served a purpose in the past, but now with modern medical technology those people can be treated without the need for such a sacrifice. Although they will have to seek out the help now rather then letting it come to them.

Maybe after the Grail Quest Arthur will finally take Montrose down and avenge the loss of his lady Jenifer's corporation.

It's so nice to hear Keith David's voice, even if it is as a big purple bad guy named Despero on Justice League.

Thanks a bundle, though I found a backup copy shortly before you sent them. When upgrading to panther, never back up files using unix's "cp" command: it strips resource forks. Thank goodness for backups.

Panther rocks, and expose is frikkin amazing (finally found a use for that extra mouse button!).

P.S. New ibooks came out this week. I worked on those too ;-)

Re: Josh's Garg Icons

I downloaded them on to my PC to transfer to a mac I had access to.

I have the "OS9icons.sit" and "OSXicons.sit" files

I'll email them. Look for the subject "Garg Icons"

I searched the net today, and I read the same phrase over and over.
Can't sleep. Clowns will eat me.
So it's not just me. They are eating people everywhere.
They must be stopped.
Must kill them first.
But nature abhors a vacuum. What will come next? What will eat me when I sleep when all the clowns are gone? Is it possible to kill all the clowns?
Doesn't matter. Don't care.
Can't sleep. Clowns will eat me.
Need coffee. Will poison clowns. They are everywhere. The circus...
That's where they live, you know? Must destroy the circus.
YES! The circus! Kill all the clowns!
Lock and load everyone. I am going to Barnum's. I have napalm. Bring the shotguns.
Need sleep. Must kill clowns.

***FLIGHT FROM THE ENCHANTER SPOILERS***

As usual, thanks to everyone who reviewed the episode! :)

Firestorm: There are seven more episodes this season.

Graymonk: I agree that the victims deserve more air time. I just never got around to working out who they were and what to do with them, I’m afraid. Some fascinating and insightful comments in your review, I thought. I especially liked your comparison to ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’. I think the idea here (and throughout the season) is to challenge Arthur’s conception of what it is to do good and especially how one does good. As for the Midgard Serpent, we’ll probably have to work that out if/when we ever do a story on it.

Lurking Echo: The White Knight is based on a literary source in essence but I made up a lot of stuff so it would be difficult to tell. I think it’s possible to guess from the information in the story but otherwise I’m going to wait and reveal this in stories. I think there’s a lot about him that people will find surprising. For his kingdom, this was stuff I made up because I wanted a kind of unique visual feel without resorting to mists yet again. I figure it would be a bit more colourful – but still very washed out – right after a sacrifice. But other than that, it would still be withered and pale. Incidentally, I’m intrigued by your analysis of Morgana, although I don’t know if I’d agree with your interpretation of her relationship with Mary. And I thought your point that Morgana was being tested by the Grail, in a way, was fascinating.

Hmm… Todd brought up El Dorado. Really though, “All That Glitters” was quite a different beast from “Flight from the Enchanter”. It wasn’t really a case of simply changing the setting and antagonist, but it was basically a new episode entirely, which I wrote from scratch. It was a hard decision since I’d already written “All That Glitters”, Todd had edited it, and I was some way through a rewrite.

Actually, at one stage between scrapping “All That Glitters” and conceiving “Flight from the Enchanter” we were very interested in trying to develop a very mundane adventure to balance out a lot of the fantastical ones this season. This was kind of the genesis of bringing Montrose’s takeover into the series earlier than we had once planned. I think this gave us the opportunity to do more with Jennifer this season though, which I’m glad about. Plot-wise, nothing really clicked as well with the rest of the season as the ethical dilemma we ended up with.

For anyone who’s interested, the original idea was that Arthur and Griff would learn (in one draft through a newspaper article, in another draft with their old archaeologist friend from season 1, Arminius Fenn) of an expedition to find El Dorado. They would see it as an interesting potential location for the Grail, and so assist since they have the opportunity. They solve some riddle using the kind of knowledge of myths and magic that only they possess and get to El Dorado. It’s a fairly utopian place and they’re welcomed.

One of the ideas I wanted to get into my second draft of the episode, which I never completed, was something to do with terra preta. I saw a documentary this Christmas about the search for El Dorado and the argument it put forward was that the real ‘grail’ of the Amazon was this terra preta soil which is extremely fertile, and scientists haven’t yet been able to determine why that is. Anyway, I thought this was a fascinating angle. The people would really believe that their soil was dependant on sacrificing people to their gods on a regular basis. Arthur would oppose them and rescue the damsel, but the damsel would turn around and blame Arthur for the shame that he’s inflicted upon her and the hard times he’s caused her people – it was her decision. She wasn’t forced. I wanted to draw some parallels with colonial powers encountering so-called ‘primitive’ tribes and trying to reform them.

There were a lot of problems with it of course. The set-up was a bit tenuous, and it would have meant that El Dorado bit didn’t begin until about half way through the episode. I also had a lot of problems making South America believable in the writing. The only scene that survived was the argument scene, but even then with one significant change. Originally I had the argument take place between Arthur and Griff. I think the colonialist-against-tribe subtext would have been a lot more apparent this way, but I think the questions of race probably got in the way as well, making both sides less sympathetic in a way. The Merlin argument fitted much better thematically, I thought.

* Sort of spoilers *
The last two stories are really good. They remind me of the TV series more and more. Maybe it’s the pace, or that all the characters behaved plausibly and even the really minor ones like the hospital security guards are interesting, or maybe how these stories have set up a lot for future episodes instead of being more self-contained.
B&W:
Fenris is an interesting character, I expected him to be less sympatheic and reasonable. He's typically not feeling too guilty about having attacked the Antarctic gargoyles, but his behavior toward Mary is caring and much less manipulative than the typical superior attitude. So that does him credit :)
Aurora in NYC? That must mean she’ll show up in Season 4!
I was left feeling, for some reason, as if they've made some progress. Maybe they have, from the point of view of proving themselves in the quest. How much time have they got left, though? Well, if the Grail is “observing them”, maybe it will wait to give everyone involved a chance to show themselves first. Morgana too. But as far as I could tell from the last story she was in, she was willing to kill Mary if that furthered her aims... so this isn’t an Angela-and-Demona situation, and so far it doesn't look like Morgana has any line she won't cross. She has even more sense of self-righteousness than Demona. Maybe because, unlike Demona, she doesn’t feel she had any initial responsibility for what happened to her.
Flight from the Enchanter:
Hmm... so once they find the Grail the Big Quest just starts? Intriguing...
What legend is the White Knight from? Was the place he inhabited permanently creepy, or was it just the timing?
Ah, an explanation of the coincidences! They may be set up as tests :). Somehow.
And, the questions in the quest are getting tougher...
* Spoilers end *.* *

Fire Storm> <<Carpet, tile or hard wood?>>: Probably carpet. little things can easily hide in there without your knowlegde.
<<I'd search for it now, but the company proxy server has a monitor for stuff like that>>: You mean they actually want you to work?
<<Well then, that's ok>>: Putting anything on a stick makes it better, and fire's already good.
<<Yeah... but sparkeys are FUNNER>>: Yes but little sparkys are fun but not really impressive, and big sparkys are too dangerous.
<<But... but... dry ice is relatively cheap>>: He probably just doesn't want to go through the trouble of thinking of where to get it. He had me looking through fire extinguisher places for nitrogen, instead of the welding supply he forgot we got it from last time. You know nitrogen is really cheap, $15 for a tall cylinder.
<<say this could be a learning experience on what NOT to do!>>: It wouldn't stop them, you know that.
<<my brain usually stops there (but it really loves the layover in Tokyo)>>: For the Pocky or being able to indulge its lolicon?

Todd - <<One question, though: who is Bartoc?>> Whoops, that would be one of my comic book indulgences. Bartoc is a Captain America character who is more of adversary, along the same lines of Macbeth and Goliath than a villain. IIRC (it's been a while since I read Cap comics) Bartoc is a French mercenary who is almost Captain America's equal in hand to hand combat. His missions sometimes bring him into conflict with Cap but the two have a mutual respect for eachother and sometimes even work together when it suited them. They even hung out socially and had a chat over a cup of coffe when Bartoc came to say goodbye to Cap during one story where it looked like Cap would die from a terminal illness.

GRAYMONK - Thanks for your review of "Flight From the Enchanter" (and, yes, I do have a certain weakness for the "literary indulgences" such as the Roland business in "The Dragon's Treasure" - which got in simply because I thought that, if we were having Arthur visit the Pyrenees, then it'd be kind of fun to have him visit Roncesvalles and pay his respects to the shade of Roland). *****WARNING SPOILERS FOR "FLIGHT FROM THE ENCHANTER"*****

THE BAD: I'm going to get this out of the way first so I can start ranting about how much I enjoyed this story. The only blatant flaw I found in FFTE was that we only got to see the White Knight's POV of his pale court. It would have been nice to get the opinion of another court member or two to see if this society really was the therapeutic(sp?) sanctuary the White Knight claimed it was.

But other than that I had a blast!

THE GOOD: The ending. Despite some darker episodes like "Something Wicked" or "Crossroads" TGS often feels a little too happily-ever-afterish, meaning there's rarely a sense that the good guys will lose. Here there not only is the question of wether Arthur did the right thing but Jennifer being out and out defeated. Terrance was right, Darien's not much of a threat when dealing with the paranormal but put him in his element and watch out!

-The revealation about the murder ritual took me totally by surprise and was a brillant twist. I'd been expecting Arthur to have a chat with the wisps, regain his confidence and race back to London to save Jennifer in the nick of time. Art did regain his vigor and sense of direction but it had nothing to do with Jennifer's plight. This not only avoided the cop-out ending of Arthur saving the day but introduced a compelling moral delima(sp/) into the mix. And the best part was Ed didn't even let on about the shades of gray at first. I was so caught up in the fact that we finally had a confident active King Arthur that I was blind to the implications of what Arthur was planning until the conference scene with Merlin and the others. And what a scene it was. Arthur and Merlin both put their cases forward quite well I thought, certainly Ed didn't seem to be biasing us to root for one view of the sacrafice over the other. The hightlight of the scene for me was the direct confrontation between Merlin and Arthur. We haven't really seen them arguing other than when one's tried to convince another he's not useless. It's far more engaging to read them challenging each other's moral code. The Roland discussion from "The Dragon's Treasure" suddenly became more of a harbinger of things to come than another of Todd's literary indulgences. Their arguement in FFTE fell along similar lines, Knightly conviction in ideal values vs. magician's pragmitism. Arthur and Merlin's moral codes were established as early as "Godess of Winter" but they've never clashed as they have here. It brings a much needed new wrinkle in their relationship. I also like that in the end Arthur wasn't sure if he'd done the right thing. It's not enough for him to know what he wants to do with his life, he also has to figure out how.

-The moral questions raised in this story. Is it always moraly right to resist the will of an evil force. If all your noble stand against corruption will acomplish is making inoccent people suffer for your moral code are you really doing what you think is right? Are there times when great good can only be acomplished through evil acts? I feel like I'm watching an episode of DS9, and considering its my favorite live action tv show of all time, that's high praise indeed.

-Reading such complex questions in a King Arthur story feels both appropirate and bizzare at the same time. On the one hand a lot of the Arthurian romances I've read tended to centre around some conflict in the chivalric code. Gawain not sure if he should kiss Lady Bercilack because she did ask him, and no chivalrous knight would deny a lady's request, but at the same time no chivalrous knight would kiss his host's wife without permission, or something like that. So in a sense its similar to those old story in that the hero is conlicted about what to do. Yet in those old romances good and evil are often clearyly defined while in this story, as in "Black and White" there are certain gray areas. And I just realised that unless you're Todd, Ed or an English minor these reviews are probably mind numbingly boring :)

-The Pale Knight. Like Fenris neither good nor bad, but unlike Fenris I doubt he and Arthur will get along very well next time they meet. He strikes me as more of an antogonist, like Macbeth or Bartoc the Leaper, than a villain.

-Ed did a fantastic job of conveying Arthur and Jennifer's frustration and fury. I felt a great deal of sympathy for them. These weren't just characters on a page but people having to deal with overwhelming external preassure and their own nagging self doubt.

-The questers' conversation at the start. They brought up a lot of good points, about how many people Arthur's helped, how incidental that help was, Arthur's age (a subject rarely broached) and the fact that Arthur's destiney could take a very differnt form from his last role.

-The return of Mr. Camford. I was wondering if you were ever going to bring up his Season 2 prophecy.

THE MISC: -I'm glad you went with the White Knight instead of the South American ritual sacrafice, it would have been much easier to say Arthur was in the right.

- This is related to last week's story. If the Midgard serpent is wrapped around the Earth and lying beneath the ocean does that mean it has some connection to the likewise big and underwater Kraken?

THE WRAP-UP: Spectaculor. Worthy of the "Gargoyles" animated series. 9.9 cool arguement scenes out of 10.

Ok, so my boss was wrong. *1* more week of nights.
Sick, at work, and alone. REALLY sucks. Oh, and since nearly everything is automated, I have even LESS to do than I used to.

Andrea: <Oh, and has anyone else had funky dreams after reading too much fanfiction?>
Oh HELL yeah! My weirdest ones were after reading through Madame Destine's complete works in a night.

Gside: <Ah. I too am somewhat ill. I hadn't known that DayQuil lasts for another two hours, and it feels good going down a sore throat.>
I was at work when I posted that, but luckily one of LM's bridesmaids was nice enough to get me a half gallon of chocolate ice cream after her shift.
<My preferred side.>
Sane really isn't much fun, is it?
<Nope, that's not mine. though I like my humans shorn, I like my furries fully furred. I think it has to do with completeness.>
Yeah, but there HAS to be a group with a shaved furries fetish.
<And I thought Home Depot was well stocked on hardware, or do you need an unusual material?>
Depot has 3" x 1/8 washers, and they are too small (slips down the bolt holes)
<In the right context a switch can be a button, at least in speech.>
True... but buttons are more fun!
<Snipe? You might also want to look at Mewtwo for powerful long range>
Got to get them all! (I want a copy of Pokemon Sniper!)
Had to return Smash Brothers. Probably won't buy it.
<I didn't know soy sauce was a muscle relaxant>
Behold the power of Soy!
<Looks like it. I think he's Kane, comes cloaked in darkness with things peeking out the edges. But why would Envy be presiding over a suicide?>
Hmm... maybe not that one... Envy was down in Hell, saying something about he being pretty... I think Envy was also in the act that just ended too. (disguised as his wife)
<Though we'll probably light it off with a candle on a big stick.>
But there is no button to press!
<Got it, got a Tesla coil. Going to try to light a flourescent tube without it touching anything>
But you GOTTA touch it!
<Shame we've ruled out dry ice, then>
Good god man, why?
<Besides the time thing>
Both are WAY less than a minute (Dry ice and CaC2)
<this is still indoors with small kids around>
Ah, so they get hit by flying pieces of plastic. So what! It will grow hair on their chests!

Jaden: <I actually tried using hand gernades>

BTW... how many more stories in this season? (Just curious)

Well, we're using "simple" roman muberals (like 4 is IIII, not IV, and 9 is VIIII not IX). But ive talked to other people, and they thing it's too early in the class for this assignment, the stuff required we haven't gone over in class at all. And the ones who have managed to finish it had a hard time; one took 4 horus to finish, and over 300 lines of code (which is MUCH more than we've done previously). But luckily, he's going to help me a bit, since i'm lost.

Todd - <<Actually, both "black knights" and "blue knights" show up in traditional Arthurian legend, not just in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".>> Yeah, I know that, But i was just beginning to take Arthur seriously enough to read some Pendragon episodes. Actually, both "black knights" and "blue knights" show up in traditional Arthurian legend, not just in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".

*SEMI-SPOILERS FOR PENDRAGON *

I hadn't given that much transportation thought either, although I ought to have.

Incidentally, "Flight from the Enchanter" originally began as a story about El Dorado (alternately entitled first "The Golden City" and then "All That Glitters"), but it didn't work out well, so we replaced El Dorado with the White Knight. It's a bit of a pity in a sense that we had to drop El Dorado, since it would have meant a little more use of non-European legends in "Pendragon". Maybe we'll work it into TGS some other way.

Thanks to everyone who reviewed "Black and White".

Vinnie/Dezi: It’s a good question, but I never really thought about it actually. I planned (and wrote) for the archaeologist Arminius Fenn, who appeared in season 1, to have an appearance in this week’s new episode. It would have been interesting to have had Fenn try to get information from Arthur about the archaeological sites of interest he’s discovered. In the end though, Fenn didn’t appear so the point is moot.

Regarding transport… Todd might have thought about it more than I did, but I pretty much assumed that Arthur would be okay up to “Fata Morgana” because he could get the Eurotunnel and then travel by foot or on public transport across Europe during the night. Getting to Egypt would be a matter of a ferry ride and I figure Leba is arranging most of this sort of stuff in such a way that Arthur manages to be ‘below radar’ (we’ll see a bit more of this in later episodes). But we will continue to look at transport issues. Honest!

And yes, when ‘Gargoyles’ airs, you’ll be able to read the 2-part New York adventure Arthur has with the Manhattan clan, outlined by Todd Jensen.

Taleweaver: Congratulations! That’s fantastic news. :)

Spacebabie: You’re right about the Antarctic clan not having an obvious protectorate. That was partly the idea of the (unused) hollow earth notion for this story. Of course, just because you haven’t seen their protectorate yet doesn’t mean they don’t have one. Just that we haven’t made it up—er, 'revealed' it, yet. ;) (Or maybe I’m just out of the loop with current TGS plans, which is quite probable).

I don’t know if TGS Arthur will ever set up base in the South Pole though. We might work it out someday, but that’s not really why we set this story there.

Graymonk: Oddly, I had to refresh both the current episode and archive pages to get the new story to load. But I think it’s just a thing with the page histories on our computers. I’m delighted that you enjoyed the new story so much though.

Question: If you read “Out of the Frying Pan” with the lights off, the Black Knight appears. You need special spectacles to see the Blue Knight. ;)

I've been playing tag with some kittens who are still skiddish around me.

Ok, Spacebabie, you got me. I rented the movie called "Spiderman". This weekend, I rented the movie called "Tron". Problem 1 was finding the darn movie. I expected to find in the SciFi section or best renters category, but noooooooooo, it was placed in the Children's category because it was made by the big Mouse. Anyways, I hadn't seen the movie before, except for parts of the ending. I was pretty far off guessing what that happenned in the beginning of the movie.

There are many things I can cook . . apparantly any casserole whose primary ingredient is a vegetable or a fruit is not among the things I can cook. 1st, it was a corn casserole, now it's a potatoe casserole that I can't seem to get right. :-( Oh well, I think I'm finally going to use up all my home grown japaleno peppers to cook some stuffed japaleno peppers since I think I have a good recipe.

In other news, I'm been so damn tired that I could fall asleep at the drop of a hat. I fell asleep with a my black cat on my lap and woke up about an hour later and suprise, suprise, the black cat was . . still on my lap sleeping.

Vinnie - <Well it could be done anonymously or they could tell those two archaeologists they keep running into, I am just saying ways could be found for such historical finds.> I don't think that's a good idea since a gargoyle clan leaves nearby. *points a finger to the episode "The Green" * I'm not saying that is what would happen, but it's best to let gargoyle clans live in peace.

Capped. Heh. Boom!
(Think physics: Dry ice is CO2 at about, what, -70? Water rapidly heats the dry ice, and in a limited space, the pressure goes way up until it reaches the maximum pressure that the bottle can take, and... BOOM!)
Also works for calcium carbide (I had nearly forgotten about that stuff until you just mentioned it. Put THAT in a sealed bottle with water with a burning rag next to it for a fun little effect)

Already know what my third book will be about, how I’m going to bind it, what I’m using to bind it and how it will be covered. All I need now is plenty of Newspapers, got the yarn and twine, needle, paper punch, drawings and mat board.

Also got 37 pages out of 65 fro my ADV script class written up. Getting my panel together for ADV non fic and I know what I’m going to write about form my final paper too.

All I need is my fiancé and I would be pleased

Belated, but here It is

********Spoilers for Black and White*******
Black and White the title made me think of the computer game but I knew it had to do something with good and evil. Then there was Fenris, a big wolf walking around with a leash tied to it’s neck.,, In the game you can have a Wolf for a crature have you trade up, or download a patch.

The ribbon chain made out the elements is like the ribbon leash used when you want your creature to do good things.

Black and white also had a different meaning as in not everything is clean cut in Black and white there are shades of Gray…like Fenris.

I did feel some sympathy for the big bad wolf and there was plenty of good soul searching within Mary.

Nazis and the Grail…I thought that was invented by the Indy movies but if they really did search for the grail...then hey I got educated.

Loki’s brood. There was something unsettling about Hel screaming as she fell through the floor. When I read about the Norse Myths I felt she got the best deal out of the three. I once pictured this scenario.

Hel: “I’m not joining you in your fight, I have responsibilities.”
Fenris: “See bro, I told you she won’t help. She’s Odin’s little girl. He always liked her best, giving her own realm to rule over.”

Antarctic Clan…the one thing that bothers me about them besides not being able to have a sufficient source of food is they don’t protect anything. The Mayan clan protects The Green, The Caledonian clan protests the trees, the Loch Ness clan protects the Monster. What dodr the Antarctic clan protect? I know they will someday protect new Camelot, but they don’t have anything now.

**************SPOILERS FOR "BLACK AND WHITE"***************

THE GOOD: -The Fenris Wolf was a captivating character. Todd's intorduction to him, with the characters observing him without any real contact felt a lot like Frodo's first contact with a Dark Rider in LOTR (the only really captivating component of an otherwise dull book). Throughout the story there was a sense of ominous uncertainty about Fenris. I suspected he would try to turn Mary into a wolf but I wasn't sure. After all, we'd already encountered friendly giant monsters like Quinn this season and maniacs who turn out to be friends, like Bercilack. Either way I was on the edge of my seat when Mary went off with him into the cold night. The first act break in "Temptation" (when Brooklyn flies off with Demona to see "what humanity is really like") kept running through my head. I could certainly see why he'd want one of his own kind around but I never picked up on the father/daughter aspect of the story (frankly, Mary's already got enough people vying to parent her already) but I didn't get the impression he had a sexual interest in her. He seemed more like a concerned older brother or a friendly mentor. I'm not sure how accurate his comparrison between Mary and wolves is but I did enjoy the examination of Mary's past and personality. Overall I found Fenris to be a facinating and rather tragic character. Neither good or bad, but somewhere in the middle. How appropriate that in a story called "Black and White" his fur was described as gray.

-Those Damn Dirty Nazis. Given Himmler's infamous interest in the occult and the Nazi philosophy's roots in magical movements like theosophy and ariosophy it certainly makes sense that they'd be after the Grail. Normally I'd be banging my head against the wall and screaming at Arthur to take the damn Nazi documents but in this case I agree with Arthur one hundred percent. For all we know the Nazis got their information by torturing Jewish Kabbalists and other European magical groups to find out where the Grail was. Arthur could have been benifitting form torture or worse if he tried to use the information at the camp and that could've cost him the Holy Grail. I really love this idea of moral pragmatism you guys have been developing.

-Nice to see a follow up on one of the clans introduced in "The Council." I take it this season of PENDRAGON is set at the same time as GARGOYLES season 4 and that we'll see Arthur's visit in that series?

-It was interesting to see another front in the SUW. I'd assumed Madoc maintained sub-bases only in New York and London but it now appears he deployed outposts wherever he found Gargoyles or the footprint left behind by Goliath's world tour. The SUW just got even more interesting.

-The Antartic's effects on Griff and Mary's transformations. The picture of Mary was quite well done BTW.

-Merlin's retelling of the Fenris wolf myth. Although I agree that he shouldn't be wasting his magic on visual aids I loved the punchline.

-The possoibilites Fenris raised of Mary being transformed into something else by the statue. I found myself wondering how different Season 3 would have beeen had Arthur and Merlin been travelling with a giant snake or a junior death godess.

-Macbeth. I'm glad to see an explanation of how they got the the South Pole.

THE BAD: -The fact that it just took me 5 minutes to find a working washroom. But hey, that's not your fault

- As usual Vash (is it alright if I call you Vash?) has covered most of the flaws; The vague nature of Fenri's prison; Arthur hearing Mary through a two thick stone cave walls and the wind, etc. Also. Macbeth's appearance brought up the question of how were the merry travellers getting around in the earlier international stories. After the big fuss Duval made it would be nice to see this issue adressed.

THE MISC: - References to a hollow Earth. Nazis. That temple of doom set up last week. PENDRAGON's starting to feel like one of those old novels. I'm starting to wonder if Zenith the albino man will pop up :)

-IIRC Merlin mentioned they'd been runnin into a lot of Unsilee leftovers lately. Given how many weapons are still lying around from the Cold War its really not surprising our heros have been running into Unsilee leftovers. As they said on Babylon 5 "The duration's going to be a lot longer than the war" (or something like that).

To sum up this was a fairly engaging character study with a lot of atmosphere. It seemed rather slow but served the nature of the story. Besides, between the action packed drama of "Fata Morgana" and the light hearted romp of "Doomed" a slower story was rather welcome. 8 freaky statues that look like mary out of ten.

I swear I am the queen of procrastination. I have a college writing paper due tomorrow (4-5 pages) that I've had 3 weeks to work on, and I have a whole page done thus far. I need to get off my ass and do some schoolwork.

But I've been watching DVD's on my new (bought used, actually) PS2. Now If I can only find a decently priced DVD with Garg epsiodes on it...then I'd be living...

And I've been trying to think of a nickname...My real name is too dull, and I need something else besides by usual alias of TakariFreak.

Oh, and has anyone else had funky dreams after reading too much fanfiction? I had one last nite. It was fun, yet very scary all at once. I need to get a life...

***“BLACK AND WHITE” SPOILERS***

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this episode, so sorry about that. At the time I wrote the outline, I put quite a lot of thought into Fenris and his characterisation and actually didn’t really expect that I wouldn’t also write it too. Of course, Todd was eminently more qualified on the Norse material, and did an amazing job. But I should probably have tried to make some parts clearer.

The parallel I mentioned once or twice with Fenris and Mary is of a young woman who visits her biological father for the first time, where he’s serving a life sentence in jail. The notion here is that Mary’s wolf side was essentially ‘given birth to’ by the Angurboda figurine. There were three characters she could have taken after, but it was Fenris’ image that she ultimately adopted. I think deep down, Mary knows instinctively that Fenris is her ‘father’ even if she doesn’t altogether like him, and Fenris really does love her as a daughter. He’s been chained and alone for so long, looking out onto the world that he’s quite lost touch with his rage of long ago.

He sees Mary has stepping closer to her true form in being a wolf. The truth is that as a human she was never entirely happy, and has enjoyed a much more fulfilling – if dangerous and traumatic – life as a werewolf than before. Fenris knows this and sees himself as freeing her. I never intended there to be anything remotely sexual about this.

As for his imprisonment, I spent quite a long time investigating the notion of a hollow earth that might have its gateway in Antarctica. There were a lot of hints in past stories with the Antarctic clan that it made sense to factor in here – questions like “where were the rest of the clan when the Manhattan gargoyles visited before?” At some stage, I had the notion that their protectorate might be a kind of hollow earth. I think ultimately, this cluttered up the story and when I came to write the outline I became much more concerned with the moral basis of the story. I’m not sure exactly when, but the hollow earth idea just kind of fell out of the story. (This wasn’t unusual in breakdowns, but then some of the ideas that are surplus for one story sometimes get picked up by another so it’s swings and roundabouts.)

So Fenris was still underground, he was just buried in a chamber underneath Antarctica, underneath the ice and in such a weakened state that he could not free himself anyway. He spends his time and energy gazing out into the world using his Third Race vision and reflecting. The Unseelies freed him because they knew he was a powerful asset but couldn’t cut his bonds. Or said they couldn’t – perhaps they thought he was too much of a loose cannon to risk setting totally free. So Fenris now was able to climb out of his prison but was still tethered there. When the Unseelie attack fails, he retreats, keeping an eye on the Antarctic clan but no longer having any reason to cause them harm.

QUESTION - Truth to tell, the idea was Ed's and not mine, and I'm increasingly coming to the suspicion that he understood it a lot better than I did (and do). Hopefully he'll do a little explanation soon about the story himself.

And as for the dwarves undoing Fenris's fetters - the idea never occurred to us, so it never occurred to the Unseelie Court.

Todd Jensen<It was actually Odin and his fellow Norse gods who imprisoned the Fenris-wolf in Antarctica; they had apparently shut him up in his "lair",>

So this lair was suppose to be in another dimension like Avalon not underground as Merlin suggested?

< but the Unseelie Court helped Fenris emerge from it, though they were not able to take Gleipnir off of him. >

Why not I thought the dwarves that forged Thor's hammer and subsequently the rope were all under Madoc Morfryn?

Taleweaver> <<vinegar, baking soda, a film roll container and some food dye>>: I don't think that's quite as flashy as we want. Wiring a sparker into the canister lid and washing the other side with alcohol gets it to fly pretty well. And if you have a spare water cooler jug, washing that with alcohol (make sure to let a good bit of vapor build up inside) and lighting the top gives you a nice jet of flame.

Spike> <<Alien Snot>>: We've going for more doing neat things than giving them messy stuff to play with. Besides, oobleck (cornstarch and water) it more of a mind bender.

VASH - Thanks for your review of "Black and White" (I was getting a little worried over how there'd been barely any feedback on this ep; Fire Storm was the only other person who'd mentioned it). To answer a few of your questions:

It was actually Odin and his fellow Norse gods who imprisoned the Fenris-wolf in Antarctica; they had apparently shut him up in his "lair", but the Unseelie Court helped Fenris emerge from it, though they were not able to take Gleipnir off of him. (Actually, the idea of Fenris's imprisonment in Antarctica was Ed's idea, and he can explain it better than I can.)

Both Ed and I believe that the Fenris-wolf looked upon Mary as a daughter-figure and wasn't viewing her with lust at all. He believed that she was really meant to be a wolf rather than a human and that he was freeing her from a bad condition. (Ed might be able to explain this better than I have as well.)

As for the Nazis, Arthur and Griff had to turn their information down because even with their all being dead, it still seemed that employing it would be somehow working in cahoots with them. (In any case, given the Nazis' track record, how likely would they have been to get close to the Holy Grail?)

Again, thanks for your review. I was glad to finally see one up here for this week's story.

TGS: B&W> (do I even need to mention that there will be spoilers?) The title works really well for this fic (snow and night, wrong and right, etc). Good points: Scrolls of Merlin reference, components that 'don't exist anymore', Indiana Jones theme (Nazis & Grail). Question marks: Why are they only using Macbeth's help now? (as a matter of fact, how have they been traveling around the world before now?). Also, I was confused about Mary's halfway transformation and how she was initially hiding it from the clan. Couldn't they -see- she was a werewolf, or was she simply bundled up so well that it wasn't noticeable? (if so, then a scene showing her try to hide her tail, etc., would have been helpful). The details about Fenris's chain were scattered throughout the fic, so that I'm *still* confused on exactly his situation. The Unseelie carried the chain anchor/rock back to Antarctica and put it in a distant cave instead of carrying it directly to the battle site (ie - garg clan's home)? It was never clear when Fenris had reached the limits of the chain--he still managed to travel around quite freely. How far away is the cave, if Arthur was still able to hear Mary scream from there (despite the wind)? I had trouble believing the explanation that Fenris was leaving the clan alone just so that he'd have a diversion--I mean, that's *really* sad. His sudden love for Mary is also a little hard to swallow (though I wonder how much of it was true compassion, and how much might be lust. Why should he be so eager to take Mary back to his cave and turn her into a wolf, eh? *poke poke*). Why do I have the feeling that this mystical Avalon-like island that Fenris was originally trapped in has something to do with Castle Carbonek? I really wish someone would have thought to ask him. Finally, I was surpised Merlin chose to magically animate his story, considering how weak he was. Shouldn't he have conserved his strength (you know, considering there was a wolf at their door--literally)? There was also the trademark facepalm moment where Mary stupidly decides to take a walk alone with an Unseelie (but at least she admitted to having no common sense). End remarks: Choosing not to use the Nazi's information seemed pretty stupid (I mean, they're -dead-). But I guess Arthur made a good point in saying that the quest isn't just for a cure, but for the Grail, and that it isn't enough that they find it, but that they *earn* it as well. Overall, cool story, save for a few question marks. Bonus points for showcasing another clan. ;)

Gside>> Make "Alien Snot" -- mix equal parts of gel school glue (Elmer's Galactic Glue with glitter works well) and liquid laundry starch. You can mix it either in a bowl or a Ziploc bag. I've done this for Cub Scouts and in art class. It's a little slimy at first but as you work with it, it gets to the consistacy of silly putty. (And when it dries to a little hard nugget, you can call it an alien booger.)

"Don't you know that it's every brother's dream to stuff his sister in a box full of Styrofoam doodles and mail her somewhere?" Graeme grinned evilly as he started to lower the lid.

Gside> Finally a chance to put seasons worth of MacGyver to good use. Off the top of my head you'll need vinegar, baking soda, a film roll container and some food dye. Put in the baking soda and some food dye. Drop in the vinegar and cap the film container. In a few moments, the cap will pop out oozing colored foam. with Green and yellow dye, you get explosing pustles. With red dye, a gun shot wound. The proportion of baking soda to vinegar is one-to-one, but experiment with it to get more pop or more foam.

Enjoy.

Fire Storm- I don't think anyone in Chicago or any Cub fan should blame that guy who messed with the foul ball. A few reasons on this. Number one the ball was FOUL, so even missing it does not change anything and there was no certainty that Alou would have caught it since he was blindly reaching over the fence.
Most important, games are not one and loss by foul balls, games are lost when you blow a three run lead in the 8th because your short stop makes a key error and your pitcher just starts handing the game to the other team. The Cubs got no one to blame but themselves and from what I say in those last two games, the Cubs did not deserve to win.

You don't want to sound goofy like Dr. Evil or Scotty, now do you? So practice, get feedback.

Sure! Now, I just have to get to a Gathering...
< Just another taboo, and messed up people, I guess>
Yeah... everything has a fetish, doesn't it?
<Any recent progress on that front?>
Not really. Still working out the kinks (read: assembling) the necessary hardware
<Not all of them, and you can't really see the spread as well at ground level>
True... But there is always the possibility of the explosion happening where I cannot see it.
<Which is why you look for multiplayer. Especially ones where you can beat them up. Nothing like senseless violence to bring a household together.>
Rented "Smash Brother Meele" and "Shrek Party". I like the former, but not the girls, and we all like Shrek.
<You can choose Samus in Smash, and I did quite often.>
As did I. Great attack strength!
<screwing isn't as fun.>
It's the suit. Too hard. It's better with the suit off.
<I always try to use the girls in fighting games>
Same. Peach and Zelda kinda sucked in the game, though. I found myself going between Samus, Link, Pikachu... and I can't remember who else I liked to use. If I was at home, I could just boot it up and find out.
<Of course not, they're clowns, aren't they?>
Yes... of course! The perfect trap! Thank you! Use their clownliness against them!
<Indigestion from the red honky noses>
Just like cricket legs, you tear them off first.
<I've worked with clowns, and they seemed coherent enough to be at least sentient.>
Don't care about being sentient. I just want to know if it is legal.
<I assume you're using banana cream pies as bait? Or do you have a different approach?>
A different approach now... oh yes... there will be clown 0wnag3 soon.

Jaden: <You get clowns? I get monkeys, they are so loud and won't shut up. Mean suckers too!>
Oh... endangered species... sucks. Can't use grenades against them.

Spacebabie: <Family Wiconsin turned off their cell phone and set it down, and then it combusted>
Ok... I wonder why.
<WARNING *channeling my father’s bad humor* Wouldn’t they taste funny? ::ducks:::>
Yeah, that WAS pretty bad!
<Can’t wait to see Envy, Lust, and Gluttony>
Gluttony is Anansi...
WTF's the difference between Envy and Lust anyway? Isn't lust just envy against someone? (Aside from the fact that Lust is Drip and Envy is just plain pathetic.)

Dezi: <<and my school is poor>> That's what I always said about the music dept. at my school. In 1999 the department bought 20 imacs for the midi/keyboard lab. I thought theyed Never get rid of those things. However, for this semester (a full two years after I graduated :( ) they actually decided to spend some money and bought 32 new Powermac G5's. I'm still in shock when ever I go in there.

Sorry about that, Josh. But it did bring you out of lurk-mode. We can't upgrade to OSX cause it's incompatible with one of our programs (as I understand it) and we would have to upgrade that program too, and my school is poor. Thanks for the numbers, though. :)

Dezi: I think you'll find that I don't like being prompted for tech support. And I don't do OS 9. I recommend 1-800-APL-CARE or 1-800-MACTANK. Those "puzzle piece" things are called extensions, FYI.

Oh, and upgrade to OS X. Welcome to the 21st century.

Take 8!

I was going to post some sci-fi reviews of the past week. Hope no one minds. Usually, the top ten are very terse.

X-Men: Evolution - Well, Kitty's got a new gal pal. Funny, in all the hustle and bustle about Kurt and Rogue, I forgot that Kitty and Rogue have really drifted apart from BFF (Best Friends Forever). Dani might be an interesting, but there are bigger fish to fry so I think she'll get cosigned to the New Recruits. Overall, light fare inter-cut between the heavy duty action.

Angel - Oh great, Spike is back. It took the whole summer and a lot of Lethe water to erase dross of the last season of Buffy. Then they drag it back up. And Spike's as non-coporeal as the First, beautiful! And just as annoying. The necromancer was good. I would have really liked to have seen him stick around. He's the first villain in a while who had the potential to win. Something to look for in the next big bad. When Spike and Angel are both evil, the dynamic works, but with both good or quasi-good in Spike's case it just annoying.

Teen Titans - A little disappointing. Slade is definately the Big Bad of this series. I would have liked to learn more about his overall goals or plans. Not everything, but more. In the latest two parter, Slade is pulling the same tired puppetmaster routine, pulling someone else's strings, this time it was Robin. And there's the inconsistent fight style. One minute the Titans are a tenth den master, the next they can't walk and chew gum without help. Then they're back to expert fighting skills. A little consistency would be appreciated.

Justice League - glad to see both parts in a full shot. Parts 1 & 2 of Justice League are often uneven. Part 1 is full of action and builds up the dramatic tension. Part 2 more action packed, with a hard push to the final battle. 'Only a Dream' follows the type. The first part with the battle with the various villains was great. Grundy waxed a little too much like the Hulk, I was expecting him to say, 'Grundy smash!'. Volcana and Firefly, finally a villain pair up that makes sense. GL and Hawkgirl got the best scenes. I'm not much of a 'shipper, but even I can see there is more going on between those two.

Part 2 had its own strengths. I was surprised that they had a fatality. Tastefully done off-screen. But it really brought home the jeopardy. Up until then, I thought Dr. Destiny was a bad Skelator wannabe. Now he was something to worry about. I'll give points for the fact that Dr. Destiny was a petty criminal looking to be a big supervillain. But that novelty is fading fast. Also points for Batman for knowing his Odyssey. Doesn't quite apply in his context though. I think I'd emphasize the fact that Odyssey's foes under-estimated him not that Odysseus was clever enough to cover his behind when he escapes.

Well, that's the review of TV. Expect a review of the latest Pendragon, later this week.

Ok this goes out to Josh or any other mac-freak:
Help! Help! Help!
My comp at the newspaper is screwed up and is stupid. Problem is, our computer fixing guy, Russ, doesn't know that much about macs. He's not even sure anyone in our computing services knows that much about macs, and my comp happens to be the one that is critical to the production of the paper, next issue out on Friday!
I was working with Photoshop, and another program, Photo Mechanic. I tried to save onto our own server, and it said it couldn't locate the server. Then it wouldn't let me click on any of the boxes that were open, so I shut it down by hitting the keyboard and tower buttons. Waited a few minutes. Turned it back on and it did that whole checking the hard drive with the crawling bar thing, the Disk First Aid. I could let it finish or click stop, then I would have to click done. (I tried starting up both ways, letting it finish or not). Then it would do the opener, Mac OS 9.2 and the crawling bar that was "starting" and the puzzle piece things would begin to appear on the bottom of the screen. At first the Starting box would be really big, then the screen would go black for a second and the whole thing would come back with the Starting box in normal size. All of the puzzle pieces would load, then the box would go away, the cursor would become a little clock, that time-clock in the corner would appear on that top bar, the cursor would go back to an arrow, and then NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS. It just stops. For a few times, we couldn't even get it to shut off again using the buttons, we had to unplug it. We unplugged all the cords and would wait, we would do all of those "little" things that we could think of, and still the same result: nothing past when the digital clock thing in the corner appears. No icons, no finder, no apple in the opposite corner.
Help!
(we are letting computing services look at it too, but consider this a challenge)

Thanks!
