Double post!

Triumph's Quebec skit: Alexa McDonough's not my MP; I live in Halifax West so unfortunately I'm saddled with a Liberal (Geoff Regan. Alexa did sort of come across as a stick-in-the-mud, but I'll forgive her for that; she really impressed me a few months ago when she came to a speech and listened to a physician from Doctors Without Borders explain how we could get affordable generic medicine to Africa. She seemed really interested and receptive, so I'll forgive a little bit of good old-fashioned Canadian Presbyterian humourlessness on her part.

What I thought of it? I wasn't offended, but I didn;t think it was particularly funny. It seemed like a drunken frat-boy stumbling drunk on Argyle Street after last call, hooting at the few girls that pass by - amusing at first, then sort of irritating, and finally kind of pathetic. I've never really been impressed with Triumph except when drunk myself. It's just so artless and crude, and I prefer humour that's more subtle, like "22 Minutes" or "Made in Canada". Conan O'Brian is capable of funnier than that. It just seemed cheap.
As for the French-bashing, that doesn't bother me. It's no worse than what we say about "les maudits Anglais" behind your back. (j/k)

Gunjack> I liked that movie just for its central thesis; the problem with the United States is that it's very much a country that thrives on sensationalism and fear. It's hard to argue with that; just take a look at any American news outlet or listen to any Congressional or political speech (especially the ones given by Emperor Bush) - appeasl to fear, protectionism, patriotism and sensationalism. Whether you liked the movie or not, it's an interesting position that deserves some serious and personal examination. Why are we so afraid of everything? What does that make us?

(Plus anyone that makes fun of that decrepit, fossilizzed madman Charlton Heston gets a few points in my book ;-)

Green Baron> I'll be here at least another three and a half yars. Halifax is a pretty booming city now, especially the music and culture scene. I think a relatively recent survey called it one of the fastest growing cities in Canada.

Whitborune> I think the ast fic of yorus I read was Love's Labour Lost. I should check for more, but I haven't really read much fanfic since I joined the Army.

Halifax was home to my family 200 years ago. I have no idea what it is like etoday, but I hope it is still aorund. I guess that also means I will see you at Le Gathering as Canada Jet offers a great price for flying from Halifax to Montreal.

BTW, Karen and I love cats immensely, so maybe we can visit sometime as Deer Lake airprot is an hour away by fight. How long do you think you'll be in Halifax? I imgaine you'll do your residency there as well.

Corner Brook is tiny and I imagine everyone knows each other. If Anne Marie went to Regina HS she might. Karen graduated from there in 99 and travels around in a green scooter, because of her handicap, and has a habit of running over people with it.

BTW, what did you think of Triumph the Insult Dog and his mocking of Quebec? Your MP (Alexa McDonough) shows she lacks a sense of humour, as I imagine many Quebecois found that routine funny.

<<I'm not a doom-and-gloom case on things like this; I tend to go by the precautionary principle, though. If there's a chance we're changing things, then it'd be better to change our behavior now than to cross our fingers and hope for the best.>> I see the logis and SUVs are expensive anyway. I'd utilize mass transit or drive a cheap Japanese car if the public system were inadequate. or non-existent. Sometiems teh environmental way saves me some money $$$$$

Dezi> Nader's raiders were a factor in 2000...they may not be one be in 2004. I'm surprised he even matters. He's a washed up icon of the 60s and 70s and he should stay there, though I guess now he's a fun joke. If Dean becomes a third party candidate, I imagine you'll have a seizure.

Sorry to hear about your breakup ::hugs:: I recall you two had an apartment together, so that's going to be tough as one of you looks for a new palce to live. You'll find someone else...maybe someone in the CR.

<<Tells when you're kinda washed up, that you kill yourself and no one notices. *shrugs* >> Well, I knew he died. I didn't know it was suicide. It is sad that the death got little coverage, but I think most of us knew. It's a shame anyone would take their life.

Gunjack> So you saw Fat Bastard's movie. I see him pretty much as a left-wing Rush Limbaugh, excpet Rush lost the weight, while Michael Moore probably eat the whole inventory of at least 10 Tim Horton's while he was in Canada for the filming :)

<<It's possibly the most childish and pathetic excuses for a film I've ever seen.>> So it's even worse than the creation of Jar Jar Binks? That's pretty harsh ;)

I'm also glad you have a second job. I hope you have better hours.

And to continue the theme...
Lain and I watched Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine". I highly recomend it to anyone who wants a textbook example of how to trump logic with raw emotion, exploit the misery of others, and lie through your teeth for fun and profit. The sad part is, he even had some borderline brilliant points, but dropped them completely in favor of slandering people who really, really didn't deserve it. It's possibly the most childish and pathetic excuses for a film I've ever seen.

Greg><<See Val, isn't it noce to come in here and not just give your $.02 on a flame war or political debate ;)>>
No debate doesn't mean I'm not angry. It just means I don't have to be logical about it. *Thrashes Greg's Hiney*

<<Only suffering the occaisonal flashback while playing tetris.>>
Plenty of that in my second job. Plenty of other things, too. "Jack Pruett was an ugly man, and he's an even uglier girl!"

In other news, I am now boyfriend-less. Yeah, the jerk decides that his pool-playing friends are more important than an ailing girlfriend, and that I am a nusciance (sp) to him. A nusciance that he pretty much dragged back into his life with overtures sweetness. Now he just refuses to be concerned with anyone but himself. F#*% him. (Well, no, not really). Green Baron> I'm actually from Prince Edward Island; I live in Nova Scotia now, though, for school. And yeah, that's where Bras d'Or came from. I don't know if I ever put it in a fic or not, but the man who started Bras d'Or named it because he had a cottage on the Bras d'Or lakes, just past Kelly's Mountain on Boularderie Island. And Claw...I dunno, something about him screams "Caper!" to me. :-)

Stormy and I are doing just fine. We have an apartment in Halifax which we share with our four cats. She's thinking about going to get a Ph.D. and I'm plugging away at med school. Dalhousie, though; St.FX doesn't have a med school (though a lot of people in my class have the dreaded X-Ring).

Karen's from Corner Brook? Cool! I know a few people up that wayt. 'm tempted to ask if she knows Anne Marie Wiseman, but that'd be a stereotype, I think. :-)

Climate change> I'm not a doom-and-gloom case on things like this; I tend to go by the precautionary principle, though. If there's a chance we're changing things, then it'd be better to change our behavior now than to cross our fingers and hope for the best.

Greetings all. Not much to mention from my end.

I will be out of the Army in 11 montsh and one week. I have already started the ACAP procedure to get a job when I get out. I wonder where I'll be..hopefully a city in the Eastern US or whereabouts.

Gunjack> It sounds like you had quite the day. Of course what will you do now that your first job ended? Do you have another job? I myself have to look into a job to support myself and in the next few years a wife...if that is where the cards fall :)

Whitbourne> So you're from Nova Scotia, eh? That woudl explain the use of Bras D'Ors in your fanfic and having Claw come from Cape Breton.

In case you haven't heard, my girlfriend is from Newfoundland (Corner Brook to be precise) and her mom is from Cape Breton. How are you and Stormy? I tak eit she's with you in Nova Scotia? Are you going to Medical at St. Francis Xavier. Karen's (my girlfriend) dad went there.

I don't know a whole lot about Global Warming though I thought it was appropriate for Gore-bot to give a speech on it during teh coldest day of the year in NYC :) I just wodner how much is due to nature and how much is due to us. I don' own an SUV nor do I have any desire to own one, so I won't be a culprit :)

Kjay> <<As a personal witness to New York B.C.W. (Brough of Child Welfare) system, someone with evil intentions can tell somebody that a chlid is being abused and is not true. While the system is wasting time on a false case, a child in real trouble is killed. >> Well, competence is a bit much to expect from a Government agency, no ;)

Mooncat> I've seen your art page very nice. My dearest Karen has one on Deviant Art too. Her sn is narvorya.

For Valentines, I got cookies, a gumball machine, and a funny book about the US and Canada called Anne or Green Gables vs GI Joe :)

<<Someone, I think Green Baron? Asked if I was from the South.>> That was me. I think some of your comments made me think that, thoug hgranted you can face discrimination anywhere. In NYC some kids from a different province of China could give you crap about being Formosan...though I doubt you face anything that sophisticated.

I haven't really seen much violence like that growing up...though I have seen some insensitivity, like a Vietnamese friend fo mien being nicknamed Charlie and someone I knew throwing pennies at the Jewish Community Center....not exactly hateful or violent, but more immature and politically incorrect.

Gside> <<I like how the guy in charge of the group recieved a minority scholorship himself. And there should have been some mention of Michael Jackson with that bleaching thing.>> There was an award for an African-American that was won by a white South African and it caused a huge protest.

I have no porblesm with such awards as long as they are doen with private contributions. Many Catholci Colleges would give me a tuition discount because I went to a Catholic HS, and there are scholarships I can receive for being Catholic or for being Irish or Scottish, or even being part French and not surrendering to every German I meet :)

DPH> There is a new soldier from Little Rock and I aksed her about Conway. From her description, it seems like your dad's views are quite common there.

Southern pride can be bad and good. Racism is the ugliset side of it, but the Southern standards of chivalry are one of its best qualities. My great great grandfather was a Confederate General, but no racist. I think he'd be ashamed at how the Confederate flag bears the taint of racism. Of course he bore no grudges oevr the Civil War as he died in NYC and was a personal friend of John D. Rockefeller.

Gathering> I'm going unless my leave is rejected. I can get a flight to JFK for not too much and drive up there with A Fan and hopefully Greg X as well. I can't wait to be there and to see Montreal. Granted my two weeks in Newfoundland right after LeGathering will be nice too.

Well, had a pleasent enough weekend. We learned today that Lain can shoot like a MOTHER F***ER when she puts her mind to it. How good? Try sixty rounds of 9mm Luger FMJ into a 6-inch circle at 7 yards, and most of them in a ragged 2-inch-wide hole that ate out the center of the target.

This is her third time shooting. 8 D

We also learned that .357 magnum snubbie revolvers are very, very loud. Shooting next to one, the concussion is like being slapped in the face, and in broad daylight the muzzle flash is the size of a melon.

So yeah, a good weekend all around. And my first job ended this morning, which means no more 18-hour workdays. Mmmmm, sleep...

Ya know, funny thing. I am writing my own fanfic, just for me, and this little girl in it dies (she's a gargoyle) and when they take her to the library to set her down (I have my own terms in what happens after gargoyles die(when the sun rises, they turn to stone and when the sun sets, they are in the last pose they did and remain that way until eternity)) well, I was thinking of it "on tv" style, and as they take her, or, as she dies, a song is played:Concrete Angel. Funny that it just came to me.

Sigh, I got back to school tomorrow night, and start classes again on monday after our 10-day vacation (well, technically, it was only a week, but barely anyone has classes on Friday or Saturday, so we all just leave after our Thursday classes). I need to get some work done!

For some reason, my SISTER'S cat, Cleo, whom I barely know (we got her a few weeks before i left for college), has been ALL OVER me this week...except for last night, she's slept in my room EVERY night (she'll run up the stairs after me and run into my room as soon as I open the door), and sits with me on the chair in the living room...and she NEVER did that before (Only thing she'd do for me was fetch me her mouse toys)! Someday I'll post a picture of her, she's ADORABLE (she's got that "tuxedo" look, and she's long and skinny, since she's part Siamese). She's such a riot...she attacks my hair (it's long), and even shadows. Her favorite toy is her catnip mice (we've gone though like 2 dozen in 4 months), but she's kinda werid, sicne she now likes to eat the tails off them...I don't know what she find so appealing about leather and rabbit fur!

and Lola, MY cat, sits in my mom's chair ALL the time. She'll often take over if she gets up. Anyway, my sister wanted to eat after she came home form works. My mom was in bed already, so my sis took her chair. Lola was in it. My sis moved Lola ot the couch, and 30 seconds later, she was on the chair AGAIN! She got uber-pissy when we moved her (it took both of us, since my sister was getting bitten and clawed) over ot my lap. She stayed there, even after I got up. Leo: Dude, Middle School STILL sucks. There's no doubt about it.

Ted's the only one in school that doesn't see me as "my tutor" "the girl that is followed by those geeks" "girl at my church" "mormon girl" "girl that's in my math class...at least I think so..."! Ya know?! I wouldn't be the slightest bit sad if I got transfered to Gilmer Jr. High in East Texas. Not the slightest. *thinks a moment* well, maybe the slightest, because that would mean leaving Gina, Jamilia, Lizzy, Ted, Josh, Marrissa, Katie, Brad, Cassie, and Ben here in Denton. ONLY THE SLIGHTEST BIT SAD! Because, I mean, my dad stores a few of his planes at the airport here and he'd be riding up here every now and then. Oh! And Alyssa.

I bet you guys are getting really bored of reading about my pitiful Middle School life right about now, so I'll shut up. That, and I don't know what else to say on the topic except... Ted's mine! Back off Lizzy, Lizzie, and Gina! You too Cassie!

TROK> The "Bad Guys" you read in Avalon Mists is not affiliated with TGS in the slightest bit. At TGS "Bad Guys" went through three development phases. The first being done by Stephen Sobotka which is what you are seeing in AvMists now, but he left taking it with him. The second I developed, but wasn't quite what we wanted, and then a third one by lain and Gunjack which you will be seeing soon. I've seen what is planned and what will be posted, and it's incredible stuff. Like nothing TGS has done before, and infinetly better than both previous developments. Lain and Gunjack started almost completely from scratch, so while there are still one or two elements of second development BG, there are no elements at all of Avalon Mists Bad Guys, which IMO is a good thing.

You ain't seen nothing yet.

Hi you all!

Any idea about when Bad Guys is being released? I've read a story in AvMist, that was a part one ... when is the part two? That stories are part of the first season of the TGS's Bad Guys? Or are they something apart?

I'm finishing fourth season of Pendragon and I'm looking forward next new season of any series to read. I need more!!!

I'm just fine and dan-dan-dandy, cause I've got a storm day today just a day before my spring break. :-)
But really, this is just unbelievable. First Hurricane Juan this fall and now this. The entire province of Nova Scotia is shut down; police are responding to life-threatening emergencies only and plows have been pulled off the roads. We're looking to get more than the average snowfall for the month of February in this 24 hour period alone. Storm surge warnings are calling for coastal flooding, and every school...and I mean every single school in the province is closed, universities and colleges included. Provincial officials and police are begging people to just stay home. Blizzard warnings are expected to persist until tonight.
The harbour ferries are still running, though.
This is unreal. The province has declared a state of emergency. Damn climate change hitting the Gulf Stream. Stop driving your SUV's! (Unless you need to plow through 50 cm snowbanks)

PETA gives vegatarianism a bad name. I respect the rights of animals, but PETA most of the time goes to the extreme!
The best way to convince meat eaters of the benifits of not eating animals is to give them the infomation and not shoving it down their throats.
Offering a free visit to a slaughterhouse might help too.
Slaughtersville is really a name in bad taste but VEGGIEVILLE? That's even worse.

Leo> <<What is "shoe porn?">>: I can think of a couple fetishes involving shoes (drinking various liquids out of shoes, being walked on by (usually) women in high heeled shoes), but I'm not sure if they'd count as just shoe porn.

Vashkoda> <<Will the first half be spent trying to catch everyone up on the fundamentals, leading to conjecture in the second half? If so, maybe Greg can leave before that happens>>: I'd say that sounds like a good plan, assuming the panel wants to fish towards a canonical answer.

Re: Home Schooling - > There are no uniform standards for what is required. Some states require a periodic visit from a social worker or other gov't agent and some don't. Some require the filing of grades, the taking of standardized tests and then again some don't.

I didn't see the SUV ep under discussion but Children's Services is the same situation. There are no uniform standards of when to pull a kid out of a household.
So maybe in NY there has to be a demonstrated threat to the child in question which is why they pulled the one but not the other. Or maybe it just made for good tv.

Gside> This assumes, of course, that Greg can/wants to attend the workshop. For it to be 'fun' and not just another bio lecture, some conjecture and theorizing would have to be made (it's almost a given that there will be some, especially if there is audience participation). The thing is, to Greg, all of this will be new, because he has no science background. I don't see how it would be possible for him to shield himself from new ideas at this talk. Yet Greg seems to let the rules slide a bit more at cons (after all, he gets questions asked at dinner without any prior screening, he judges costumes based on fanmade characters, and he visits fanart galleries that often have original characters). I guess it will have to be made clear whether the crux of this lecture will be teaching biology basics, or speculating about the biological workings of gargoyles. Either way, there's sure to be the problem of having a group with different backgrounds in biology. Will the first half be spent trying to catch everyone up on the fundamentals, leading to conjecture in the second half? If so, maybe Greg can leave before that happens. I dunno; it will be interesting to see how the panel decides to organize it.

**L&O:SVU Spoilers**

Thank you, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for addressing my only concerns with home-schooling. However, as I understand the law, there are scheduled visits required to verify the child is learning, right? I don't mind homeschooling as long as there are unscheduled visits to ensure the child is indeed learning *AND* to verify that abuse/neglect isn't occuring.

However, I have a stupid question. If the mother failed to show up for family court, wouldn't she have an outstanding warrant for her arrest? I don't buy this whole scenario. If the mother kept beating up one child, why in the heck wasn't the other child taken away because the mother is obviously a threat to both children and why in the heck wasn't the mother required to attend counseling?

**END L&O:SVU Spoilers**

Yggdrasil> re: bio talk> Good luck with it. I might have volunteered, but I'm still not sure whether I can make it to the con. How would you plan on organizing the talk? Is it just going to be a general biology lecture, or will it focus on gargs in particular? You might attract more interest (especially from the artist/fanfic writer/RP-gamers) if you promised to include new perspectives about gargoyle gross anatomy (wing musculature, heart physiology... the things we've discussed in here, and decide if it's going above a PG rating) and the pro's/cons of their strange metabolism. To focus on the anatomy, you might also want to include an artist on the board, since they study anatomy closely and might place emphasis on different things than a straight biologist would. It might even be interesting to get the opinion of someone like Greg Guler, if you manage to contact him, to see what originally inspired him to design the gargoyles as he did. If you want to make it more general, you could discuss the biological questions authors/GM's should consider when creating a new species, to make it more realistic and pass reader/player scrutiny.

Greetings;

I'll be reverting to my normal colour soon. This one is making me ill.

Dezi: The link for the later chapters on Fanfic.net is located at the top of the page in a pull down menu beside the author's name.

Mooncat: DVD X Copy is one of the best software I ever invested in. I have the platinum package and have been more than satisfied with it. Just remember, it's only for making archival copies of movies you already own ;-).

Spacebabie: WB has retained the rights to Angel for the foreseeable future. There are plans to have a Buffy/Angel movie produced sometime in 2006, although it is unknown if this will be a made for TV mini-series or a feature film.

Whitbourne: The Round Table/Open Discussion format was what I was thinking about as well. If worse comes to worse it could involve a short lecture from each of us followed by an extended discussion period, where we (and other I hope) can try to apply our knowledge to a fantasy world.

On another note, IS THERE ANYONE ELSE WHO WOULD WANT TO BE A PART OF THE BIOLOGY TALK AT THE GATHERING. Although both Whitbourne and I are game, many of us know that one person talking for an extended period of time about science can be rather boring. After all, the more diverse the presenters, the less chance for the audience to fall asleep. Also it would be good to know how much time we can budget for each speaker (I think we can have about 60-80min total).

If any interested parties can e-mail me when they can I would greatly appreciate it.

The mushrooms were cooked in the butter sauce and the string beans were steamed…I do like to snack on raw string beans though. Dessert was pound cake with strawberries and whip cream.

Plenty of yummy stuff at home….Cake, candy and Girl Scout cookies We got:
Thin mints
Peanut butter sandwiches
Shortbread
The fudge dipped animal cookie
Chocolate covered peanut butter
Caramel delights
Lemon pastry creams

And a new one called piñatas. They are basic cookie with straw berry goo, sprinkled with a bit of coconut and drizzled with vanilla frosting.

From the WTF department: Has anyone else seen the Reanimator? Has anyone seen any of the sequels? My father rented the latest one…Beyond The Reanimator and it came with a music video…it looked like Queer eye for the zombie guy. I’m sorry but dance club tunes and horro movies do not mix. It would have made sense if it was rap, alternative or hard rock, but dance pop? The movie was heavy on the gore…there was an electrocution, heat exploding, bisection, decapitation and a male part being bit off…in fact the video was the scariest thing on the DVD.

Josh -- oooohh... how many guesses do I get? L@@Ks... *jealous* wow, you've out done me. I only have a 200 gig firewire hard drive... well I also have a 60 gig one too, but it's just not the same as one drive with all the space... sigh.

Just bought a copy of DVD X Copy so I get to play with new software today. *^_^*

Valentine goodies -- hmmm... artwork that a few friends made for me. Is nice *^_^*. I got invited to a party but declined to stay home and bid on some auctions that night. sighs. Should have gone to the party, the auctions went much higher than I'd be willing to bid. Now must stalketh the Barnes and Nobles to see if valentine Godiva chocolates are on sale *^_^* mmm... Godiva.

Otherwise I didn't do much for Valentines myself this year. I did some art, and I made some Chicken Alfredo *happy drool* and bid on auctions for stuff. But I guess it's better than my ex-boyfriend who I checked in with today and found out his wife (the one he imported) went out with her girlfriends and left him to his own devices, and having to order in pizza.

As a whole it's the most low key Valentines Day I've ever had, especially for one on a Saturday. I need to get out more. *^_^*

Airplane/Jet on eBay... ahhhh eBay. I was more interested in the StarWars Landskimmer/car. That I could have driven *^_^*

Mooncat: I bought myself a 250 GB firewire hard drive, as a tribute to my, uh, self-love. Guess what's going on it! ;-)

Mooncat> <<Did anyone score special goodies for Valentine's Day?>>: Handmedown generic teacher chocolate through my father.

Question> <<Ever tried reading Frodo/Faramir mpreg slash? Now thats just disgusting>>: Maybe conceptually, but Uziga tops that by being both conceptually and visually disturbing.

Aria> <<I've never see a board/forum that supported multi-coloured text>>: On quite a few boards it's replaced rot13 as the standard spoiler filter. Just set text color to match the background, you're good to go.

Leo> <<That bid seems to have been retracted. It's only 25mil now>>: And it's back up. It's going to be a real headache for them filtering bids.
