Greetings and another day of this awful cold. I have never had these many colds in one winter.

Patrick> <<Today is Super Tuesday, so remember: vote early, vote often!>> Too bad this will sement John Kerry as the nominee and we'll be stuck with that gold-digging mega prick for four years. I hope he takes a parade through Dallas in a convertible to celebrate his election ;)

Oscars> I get one channel in Korea and I could care less about most of the speeches, and I can just get the results on-line. Now, on the flip side Gigli won the most Razzies :)

Kjay> <<YA SEE!! People are starting to see bush for what he really is!! He'll be gone by november. Bush=Devil. There I said it!>> It will be January and John Kerry will replace him. As bad as Bush is, I find John Kery much worse. I'm voting for Gary Nolan, so at least I won't have to hold my nose when I vote. Good thing I'll be out of actiev duty for the Heinz Ketchup Administration, and I blame Bush for the eventual election of John F*cking Kerry.

<<How is letting gay people marry going to effect the nation? Homosexuality is a personal/religious
issue. This is free country and bush doesn't have the right to tell anyone who to marry.>> and Kerry supports blocking gay marriage in the Massachusetts Constitution, and he's a divorced gold-digger.

I think the Government should get out of marriage alltogetehr and just delagalize teh whole marraige process. There are almost 1100 benefist for "married" couples that should not be exclusively for coupels who decide to get married in Vegas or by a Justice of the Peace. Marriage is essentially a contract and teh Government needs to break it down to just that. Everything else is for the couple to decide.

<<You're going to be an officer in the navy! Good for you! I was just planning to join the navy after
my enlistment is over. I already talked to a navy recuiter
and he told me the the navy is more laid back. I'm not
really officer material though.>> Nope, that is Whitbourne. I've thought about the Navy, but I'd have to discuss that with a certain Hellcat first.

Hellcat> <<US won't be the same with rampant beavers....*smirks* ;)>> I await your beavers of mass destruction ;)

::kisses::

Damien> Lyndon Johnson didn't use that feature in the Constitution to hold power in 1968, but thankfully the bastard was destroyed by the Vietnam War. I also thnk war has to be declare for that to take effect, and the last US declaration of War was WWII.

Go ahead and burn Washington DC. Most Americans hate the place. The city's a shithole. I imagine Canadians have mixed views of Ottawa (and I'm not surprised that Ottawa had so much looting during the August blackout), but it seems like a much nicer city.

Whitbourne> You worry too much. Bush's right-wing advisors (like Canadian born David Frumm) are not too keen on annexing Canada, except for Alberta maybe.

I think you'd have to worry more about the American left annexing Canada, as they would want the votes to keep their power. Don't worry, Canada will continue to be controlled by Quebec and besides, the Moose Overlord who secretly rules Canada will neevr allow it ;)

I do admit Canada is great, but I think its bestto keep borders where they are, escept I'll give you New England for Alberta and I just want Western Newfoundland for my personal fief :)

Hellcat> <<I would love to marry him ad Thomas but that’s a bit much hehe. Don’t get the vengenance demon out to getme,Thomas ;) I still love you *looks cute* I just love Johnny um a little…. :D>> That's ok ::kisses:: Funny you shoudl mention Vengeance demons, forI can bring up Anya from Buffy the Vampire Slayer ;)

<<My grandpa’s brother married a black woman. My grandmother disowned that sideof the family. My grandmother’s scary. I guess she’s still stuck in her generation. I’m not looking forward to see her this April. Too damn scary but she is my grandmother…>> Wait until she meets my black cousins :) Hopefully Cousin Tommy will get near her and start telling polish jokes justto really irritate her :D

<<My mother believes in two things. Walmart and God. T wo things I lack belief in. I’m afraid she has gone too far and seem to blend God and Walmart.>> I have no major problems with Walmart, but the wife of the phony John Kerry has denounced it, while she has a few million invested in Wal Mart. She's a hypocrite, but look what she married....better yet don't, since he's a hideous one.

Of course, 90% of Wal Mart's employees have Health insurnce, so its not all bad. Of course I could always get you on a rant about Canadian Tire ;)

<<Yeah it’s gonna be an adventure for me. My first time in US! Whoo! I’ll stick with whatever’s convenient but I feel safer haivn gyour parents drive me and my mom and dad around. I’m so small town haha.>> Well, when going downtown, it will be good for all of us to queeze in and only pay the parking for one car. I hope we can see soem stuff by bus on our own during the day.

<<Let BC join Japan and Hong Kong,>> Well, how about China's Government collapsing? Inner Mongolia, East Turkestan, and Tibet will be free. Hopefully all Communist leadership will be rounded up and executed at Tianemen Square, and Taiwan will take Southeastern China along with Macao and Hong Kong. BC can join them.

Now I'm off, beloved ::kisses::

I was oblivious to the Oscars. Even though now I remember there being mentions of it on various talk shows and there was a big ass banner in the enterance of my grocery store (which I actually looked at today) I was otherwise occupied. However, I did catch some news bits today so I know vaguely who won what. The best actress, whose name I can't remember, I saw on a talk show some weeks ago talking about her movie which I did want to see. Just from clips it looked fascinating and it was clear that pretty model type girl was able to become this totally different type chacracter, she had impressive acting chops. Sean Pen, ooo, Madonna's ex... the only reason I even know who the heck he is. Didn't see his movie, didn't care. Johnny Depp or Bill Murray would have had my vote.

LotR - wootie!!! Yes they deserved it just in so many ways. The best most sweeping epic movie trilogy since the original three Star Wars movies. Makes me want to go grab my dvds of the extended versions and watch them all over again. gahhhhh so want the last movie on disc to complete my set!!!! ...wonders what the extra bit will be for the delux set this time...

On the red carpet... lots of gorgeous gowns. Loved the red number Catherine Zeta Jones had on. Angelina Jolie was stunning with 10 million dollars in diamonds dripping down that exquisite plunging neckling. I liked her dress best of all with it's smooth lustrous material and simple elegant design. It was also a keen dress for a gargoyle because it's backless, and I could see Angela wearing something like that easily.

*sleepy*

so the room isn't changing over this week?

Leo>> <But LOTR certainly had theirs coning considering they got f$#&ed over the last two times> Personally, I think they were overlooked the last two times on purpose, in order to sum the entire trilogy in this one award show. Because it is a trilogy the movie isn't complete until the last edition, then the whole of it can be judged for the merits of the conclusion. or some bullcrap rhetoric like that. anyway, that's my thoery. but it makes for a lousy award show for everyone else.

I finished installing cabinets in my parents garage today. My fingers have all kinds of wounds from splinters, screws and hot drill bits.

Oscars: Billy Crystal's opening number was..... what I'd expect from Billy Crystal and then some *shakes head (silly man)* I was hoping "Pirates" would get at least one technical award. But LOTR certainly had theirs coning considering they got f$#&ed over the last two times. I do question the win for "Best Editing" since they cut Saruman's final scene which removed Christopher Lee from the movie. But it will be in the DVD so,... meh. I was disapointed that Sean Penn won "Best Actor"

Gside:<<If it'll help me get some action, I'll support you>> But these beavers have teeth that are designed for gnawing wood. ;-)

Whitbourne:<<...devoted to getting the *Americans* back across the 49th.... ...*American* motives.... ...American governance system.... ....fact that the primary Canadian criteria for culture is "Not American" doesn't bode well.>> Technically the term "American" should apply Canada as well. It's on the American continent. We're just "The United States" of *America*. Maybe Canada should change it's name to "The Canadian Provinces of America* :p (Not being serious, just having fun with the word "America")

Damien: With his comments about a Constitutional amendment (not state law, or federal law, but a Constitutional amendment) against gay marriages, Bush has pretty much ousted _himself_. And it was during an election year, so this will stick in people's minds. So all the people who have been complaining about him can just sit back and watch him get destroyed in this election.

The thing about the Academy is that it's made up of people, and their opinions. And you know what they say about opinions... they're all like assholes, and nobody thinks their's stinks.

I was obviously very happy with the Oscars this year, I thought each and every Oscar was well deserved. These people spent the last seven years of their life crafting these films, and it was great to see that honored.

But I am hardly happy with the Oscars every year, before this year I haven't been at all happy with them since they gave Best Picture to AMERICAN BEAUTY and Best Actor to Kevin Spacey. Last year I thought GANGS OF NEW YORK should have walked away with BP, and I thought that Daniel Day Lewis got robbed, and the previous year I detested A BEAUTIFUL MIND, my personal pick was FOTR, but really, I'd have given the Oscar to anything but MIND... did I mention I hate Russell Crowe?

I don't recall previous years to well, but if I were a little older and watched it at the time, I'd have been thrilled with Best Picture going to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and Best Actor and Actress going to Anthony Hopkins and Jodi Foster that same year. Though I recall being happy that SAVING PRIVATE RYAN lost BP, but I forget what it lost too.

So really, these awards don't mean much. But I love movies so I watch, and I am of the opinion that this year the Oscars went to all the right people... well, except Johnny Depp, he should have gotten one. But there is a reason I'm glad he didn't, but it involves a bet, which I am not going to go into here.

So kudos to the LOTR crew, it was earned.

Andrea: (Re: Oscars discussion) Well see, this is a comment room, where we talk (or "comment") about things that happened. We could talk about things that haven't happened, but they haven't happened yet. ;) Seriously, I think the Oscars can be important in making films memorable. Certainly when I look back at films that were before my time, stuff like knowing it won Oscars is one of the only indications of potential quality available. Even though, as we see once again, they aren't terribly reliable.

Can't say much cause I have to go for my run, but just this...Canada joining the States? Better not happen in my lifetime, that's all I'm saying, or I'll start a rebel army devoted to getting the Americans back across the 49th. :-)
I'm mostly teasing. Mostly.
Seriously, unless the economists have their way, I don't see it happening, at least not successfully. Canadians wouldn't give up their own constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and all that, and to be blunt, there's just too much of a suspicion of American motives up here for it to ever be successful. Add to that the fact that we would be grossly underrepresented in any American governance system, that the right-wing loonies that current have the ear of your *ahem* president wouldn't be welcomed up here, and that Canadians just wouldn't put up with the crap of U.S. federal organizations like the FCC, the Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon (trust me, we don't) it would never be a succesful political union. That doesn't mean someone isn't going to try, but fact that the primary Canadian criteria for culture is "Not American" doesn't bode well.
The fact that a recent report on how Canada is a "haven for terrorists" because of our "liberal freedoms" sort of sums it up.

Hi everyone and I hope you get better fast thomas! I wish I could be there to ‘mother ‘ you *kiss*
I’m so tired from watching the awards last night. Managed to watched half but have mixed feelings on Lotr winning 11 awards. I love the movies but argh can’t other great movies get more noticed too? Anyways I odn’t usually watch awards but I watched this one to drool over Johnny Depp Mmm Mmm Mm. Yummy.
I like older men Go figure haha. I would love to marry him ad Thomas but that’s a bit much hehe. Don’t get the vengenance demon out to getme,Thomas ;) I still love you *looks cute* I just love Johnny um a little…. :D

Dezi:
You claim a colour!? *raises brow* hmm.

<Oh and cappinco if you like a sugar-caffeine high haha. > Bad things tend to happen.... Very bad things... But, Indiana is slow. They won't know what the Hell a blueberry is for another four years, let alone the concept of putting one on a fritter ( I still don't know what that is, is it a pastry? I do like the blueberry idea though, reminds me of some good muffins).”
Bad things? Oh I think not! Better than gettign drunk. Youo get the healthy kind of buzz. Although coffee psychoisis is very bad. Lol Blueberry fritter is basically doughnut with blueberries in the dough alogn with glaze. In the center of the fritter is blueberry filling.
I’ts not fair. I always like the doughnuts that disappear on me. *cries * Why me! I miss my fritter. I’m glad though my neighbor is makign blueberry cake! That’s makes up for the lost fritters.

<do you get snow in Indiana at all? I'll envy you if you don't. > Never envy a person in Indiana. Rather, pity them. This place SUCKS. Yeah, we get snow here, not nearly as much as Chicago, or NW Illinois (where I'm really from). But really, Indiana is confused. Just like it doesn't know what timezone to be in (So parts of the place chose a side, and the rest made up their own), it doesn't know when to produce a good snowfall. Instead, you get rain. Then ice, then some snow. Real snow doesn't come til about late Jan. And, even with all these different stages, the locals still freak out when there is merely a drizzle or a DUSTING and drive like their Floridans suddenly transported to northern CANADA. These people are backwards and dumb (ok there are good ones, but I've meet to many of the uglies and they tend to supercede the good ones). They worship cars, cars that go in circles. They think Bobby Knight is really a nice (albeit misunderstood) man, with only a slight temper problem. And the kicker: These people produced Dan Quayle. (oh yeah, and Michael Jackson, 'nuff said). Ok enough about Indiana. I need to move somewhere new. Like, New Mexico.

I see. I never been to US before so naturally I’m curious : ) I’ll be wary of Indiana then ;)

”We really don't know too much of my father's side. My great great grampa ran back to Mexico to fight with Pancho Villa, made a brief appearance to let his son in Texas know he was alive, then ran back there. Dunno...We also didn't find out til recently that my great grampa had a sister. She was never spoken of, because she ran off to Chicago and married a black man (in the 20's- waaaay taboo). That would be cool to trace though, but I don't even know her name.
Ow! My elbow!”
I see. Owie. I know tabooes awfully well unforuntately. My grandpa’s brother married a black woman. My grandmother disowned that sideof the family. My grandmother’s scary. I guess she’s still stuck in her generation. I’m not looking forward to see her this April. Too damn scary but she is my grandmother…

<I'm lacking my caffeine.> Passes a cappuccino. :)
Thanks Dezi you’re a lifesaver!! *madly drinks her cappucino* mmm

“<krispy kreme is the devil! > No no no. Wal-Mart is the devil. Krispy Kreme is one of those little sub-demon minions that dance around with pitch forks and glee saying in little high pitched voices: Yes sir! We love you sir! Grant us your bidding sir! Or something like that.”
I agree with you. Walmart’s evil. It took over the minds of my town! Everyone loves walmart here. Because it’s cheap and giddy…My mother believes in two things. Walmart and God. T wo things I lack belief in. I’m afraid she has gone too far and seem to blend God and Walmart. Ayieeee the christians are finding a new chruch! AAHH! Walmart was pened in Corner Brook in 2000 and I haven’t set foot in it until 2003…when I had a roomy who told me you could get food cheaper there…haha. Yeah…I regret it. I was in walmart yesterday with a crazy clerk followign me every 30 minutes, babytalkign me, “Are yoou looking for your mommy? Are you? She’s over there…’
I sam still in PAIN> I want to KILL that lady…maybe the entire Walmart. There was a army guy there and I wasso tempted to drag him over and saw “Practice shooting range with that lady.”
*ahems*

Ah, you are one of the Divine, Giver of the Bean!

For they are one with the almighty"

“That can work and buses are handicapped-accessible, plus my parents can drive us as they may demand to, since they have mixed feelings about my love of public transportation (they don't like it but are glad when they think about how much they didn't have to pay by adding me to their insurance).”
Yeah it’s gonna be an adventure for me. My first time in US! Whoo! I’ll stick with whatever’s convenient but I feel safer haivn gyour parents drive me and my mom and dad around. I’m so small town haha.

”I'd agree. I just have absolutely zero faith in Public school thanks to New Orleans. Also a lot of my knowledge is self-taught, like History and Geography, so I'm glad I learned how to teach myself...that is the most important thing to teach in school (and at home) along with the desire to learn.”
Good thing to have. A desire to learn. : )

<<Maybe but regardless of fiancial status, taxes are to be paid for. No exceptons.>> And that is the cause of the problem right there. I advocate revolution that will leave me Baron of Humber Valley :)
Ambitious are you? Hehe. As long as I’m Baroness! :D

By the way, GB you left out Nunavuit in your prediction of Canadian Federation. You and Whitbourne wold be disappointed when I say this: Let BC join Japan and Hong Kong, have the north be a Arctic Federation, including Labrador. where they have their own government. We’d give Innu back their land somewhat. Quebec can be its own poor country and happy with that or join with US later. The middle provinces from Alberta to Nova Scotia can join northern states of USA. And…Let Newfoundland be its own country again with Hibernia, and Chruchill Falls intact and Newfoundland can get back on its feet and involve itself with indutries ad business deals that makes sense. I know this idea is flawed but I sincerely believe that in a century or in future, Canada will inevitably become part of US.

“I also summon Pistoff to demonstrate a flame war :)”
I have no idea what you’re talking about haha. Are you a pyro?

Now I’m going to end this ppost since it’s 3 pages! Ack! I m panicking right now because I had a letter this morning about a reference letter missing from my graduate application file. AHH!! My ref had to be in montreal. *whimper * This is NOT my day! I'm so gonna kill him. I better get in! Grr...

Am I the only one who doesn't give a crap about those award shows? All i've been seeing tonight is people talking about it...if you all friggin' saw it, why the heck do you need to talk about it? it's over and done with, ya'll know what happened...just a little peev of mine.

Some one diseased me...for the past 5 dayts or so, on and off, i'm REALLY tired (even after getting SOME decent sleep, and caffene when i need to stay awake), and sweating a bit (even though the heat in the room isn't high, it's only near the heater due to poor circulation in the dorms, the window is sligtly open and it's below freezing, and I'm in my underwear). It comes and goes, like I was okay enough to go the grocery store to get food (I have to walk, but it's only about a half mile away). Granted, I probably could've gotten away with a sweatshirt than a winter coat since it was nice out today, but by the time i got back, i was WICKED hot and sweaty and very tired (and it came on very fast too), I'm shocked I made it back to my room in one piece, sicne I had barely just put my stuff away and had to lie down, then promptly zonked for about 3 hours (waking up covered in sweat).

And because of this, I cant get to bed at a decent hour (thus the reason im awake to type this)...foing to bed early doesn't work, i just cant fall asleep.

I'll shut up now. Sleep is starting to kick in (at last)....

Sleep...good....

It won best score?!!! For goodness sake, Oscar voters, don't encourage that crap! It's disappointing to see ROTK sweep the board as much as it did, but the hype machine was very well tuned so it's not too surprising. At least "Lost in Translation" got something for its troubles, even though it deserved Best Picture (it makes a very strange comparison to ROTK though... one film so minimalistic and understated, the other so over the top and heavy-handed). "Finding Nemo" got a nod too, which was nice.

Dezi> <<That was about as funny as the green mushrooms>>: Don't worry, I've got plenty more where that came from. Or maybe you should be worried.
<<What's that?>>: Very tasty stuff. French fries with (melted) curds (or mozarella) and gravy.

Fire Storm> <<Or before AOL>>: But then who was the great evil of those times?
<<No one really talks about starboard play, and that worries me>>: That's just because no one bothers to remember which ones starboardplay and which one's portplay.
<<I had a thought: Silly Xenomorph! Trix are for Kids!>>: It'd take a brave person to use that in context.
<<Well, the good thing is that xenomorphs really don't age, so that is a bonus>>: Oh sure, just because you're not supposed to. Well, I'm breaking conventions here.
<<But Guandalug said to NOT use global... whatever (I forget and don't wanna look it up)>>: That just means we can't assume get and post variables are automatically passed to analogous php variables.
<<How many people who quote that line have actually SEEN that movie?>>: I've seen the beginning. Didn't stick around because the bulk of the movie didn't seem too interesting. Besides the premise, of course.

Damien> <<so far i'm the only one who uses Lexington (at least that i've seen)>>: It has been done before. Can't remember anyone who did so consistantly.

Fire Storm> <<Especially the Scooby Doo one>>: You know, even after reading that, I still enjoy eclairs.

Greg> <<Today is a great day to be a geek>>: Let's hear it for geekdom.

Today is a great day to be a geek!

Just the lite answer, since I fully intend on reading your stories (I looked at the picture archive and now want to know more!) So, then who is Jericho, and Elektra, why do they look so much like Demona and Princess Katherine?

Damien > the "Damien" in those pictures is a character from my fanfic saga. Biological son of Brooklyn and Angela. Egg was stolen and subjected to evil magic resulting in accelerated growth and psychopathy. Turned most of Manhattan into a living hell. Long story ;)

Greetings to all, especially my beloved and wonderful Hellcat who I see in August.

Lain> <<*beats head on desk*>>

No need to get so frustrated. I tak eit you may refer to the actions of socialists (mainly the social democracy types) and mixed-capitalists like Upton Sincair, Samuel Gompers, the muckrakers, Theodore Roosevelt, and a whole bunc of others...I would have preferred a response to show what good came of Marx himself. Granted, he did admit that he was not a Marxist towards the end of his life.

Of course, your frustrated resposne si a sign of our differences. My own mother actually beleives the Communist Manifesto is beautiful, though she knows that its application has led to murderous tyrants and revolutionaries on t-shirts. Speaking of that, my lj has a new icon of Che Guerva with Mickey Mouse ears.

As a disciple of capitalism, this icon (along with a cute icon of Karl Marx with mickey mouse ears), and the fact that when I was in Bulgaria sidewalk vendors busily mass produce and sell Red Army memobrilia, showing that perhaps capitalism is in some way sstronger behind the Iron Curtain than in America...oh how I so love going to Bulgaria!!

But to convince me of good in Marxism requires a good explanation and I trust your wisdom, plus I was also being an annoying jerkface, because I love you >;)

<<it has never been disputed that henry ford (of the ford motor company) gave quite a substantial amount of money to the national socialist party of germany under hitlers rule, 40 thousand dollars to reprint anti-jewish pamphlets in german or somesuch. he got a medal for it, too. he was praised in "mien kampf" as "the only man in america free from jewish control". his book, "the international jew" (also known as "the eternal jew") was extremely popular in germany and was responsible for "converting" many people (by their own admission) to the hatred of the jewish people. >> It is also interesting to note that his rivals had superb employees who were Jewish...so he may have been scapegoating, too. I guess we can call him Heinrich Ford now. This is also one reason why I would never buy an American car, except maybe a used Saturn.

Whitbourne> <<Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont (the three ignored states of the union), and have the seven provinces/states become their own country and separate from Canada/the States, respectively. We'd probably be poor, but at least we'd have some wicked parties. :-)>> Well, I would advocate a breaking up of America and Canada into a series of smaller nations forming a Confederation as it will make fun results.

This new nation may be poor, but Churchill Falls can power the whole nation and sell the rest to the highest bidder. Once Ottawa is unable to steal the oil, the nation could benefit from its oil like Alaska does. Moncton, St. John, or Caribou could be the capitol, while New Hampshire would be the wealthiest state and Newfoundland may beat it once Ottawa stops robbing her.

Another combo I see in British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon, along with Yukon, Alaska, and Northwest Territorie (which could be renamed Klondike). Maybe I could work on a layout of the Greater American and Canadian Confederation.

<<but the Liberal government in Ottawa has shownitself more than willing to be just as financially stunned>> I imagine if given the power Jack Layton would prove to be just as guilty. Actually if soemeone is well-versed on Saskatchewan, their Premier Lorne Calvert is NDP, so I wonder how he is holding up on that. I think you'll agree that it's odd Saskatchewan has an NDP Premier while most of their provincial delegation is Conservative. Now PEI's MPs are all Liberals, while their Provincial Government is Conservative, but that is common in much of the US, too.

<<It seems to me that it's a system of government designed for smaller areas than full fledged nations.>> I see Communism working in small tight-knit all-volunteer communities. Communism (and to some extent anarch-capitalism) only work with the cream of humanity. I see a beauty to anarcho-capitalism (mind you I am a libertarian Economist who has an icon of Che Guerva with Mickey Mouse ears), but realize it doesn't work.

<<Markets should be allowed to decide a large share, but there needs to be centralized consideration of the necessary services of government; health care, education, defence, social safety nets, etc.>> The problem with social safety nets is when they trap people and do more harm than good. Of course, if social workers were volunteers instead of buerecrats, that may help the situation immensely. Centralization is also a thorny issue as I believe only Defense should be a Federal concern while the other should be left to state or provincial authority with some federal guidelines and ceilings.

You'll find conservatives and liberals by and large agree on the need for a role in Government, but they will differ on how much.

<<Once I'm prime minister (and this will happen, trust me :-)>> Well, if you're PM of a Conservative/NDP Coalition, the resulting compromise will either be incredibly good or incredibly scary. Best thing you can do is have MPs in your Coalition and Opposition tackle those issues which they care about so you can get as much handles as possible. Maybe you won't cover primary stuff, but getting second and third tier stuff solved is very important.

<<Starting this September, I'll be a commissioned officer (Acting Sublieutenant through med school, Sublieutenant in residency, and then Lieutenant once I'm finished) with a signing bonus, a salary (over 40k a year while I'm in school, and 50k a year when I finish), tuition, books and instruments paid for, paid vacation and paid leave to attend conferences, and the chance to start building a career in public and international health. I'm really excited about this, and I'm also pointing this out to show that not all of us liberals are complete wusses. :-)>> Well, Congratulations, sir. As an Enlisted soldier in the US Army Finance Corps I will salute you at Le Gatehring, then I will play In the Navy for you on my laptop :)

<<(I even asked if being an officer meant I couldn't be engaged in politics, and they said that as long as I wasn't representing myself as the official voice of the Canadian Forces I could write all the letters and go to all the rallies I wanted. :-)>> That's a lot more lax than the US military. Even as an Enlisted soldier, I think its against the rules to call my Senator a dumb blonde whore, so I hope Arm-waver Ashcroft isn't readng this site.

Question> <<I think it would be better if they turned all the people on welfare and in jail into organ farms for all those tax paying citizens in need of organ transplants. And for thosse who are too unhealthy to give well we can just strand them in the North Pole and harvest the survivors as conscripted cannon fodder.>> You may need to work on that sarcasm, dude. I'd personally like to help the welfare recipients who want to be productive, while letting the rest live on meager rations and not reproduce.

Patrick> <<160 days left until The Gathering 2004 in Montreal, Quebec!>> Woohoo, and in Montreal I will show my French heritage by surrendering to Bud-Clare as she is a quarter German :)

Belobed Hellcat> <<We’ll figure it out. Worse ocme to worse I can demand piggy back rides! ;)>> That can work and buses are handicapped-accessible, plus my parents can drive us as they may demand to, since they have mixed feelings about my love of public transportation (they don't like it but are glad when they think about how much they didn't have to pay by adding me to their insurance).

<<*kiss* True. My school was too borin` to be violent and whatnot. Outside though was a bit questionable. No school’s perfect, not even catholic.>> I'd agree. I just have absolutely zero faith in Public school thanks to New Orleans. Also a lot of my knowledge is self-taught, like History and Geography, so I'm glad I learned how to teach myself...that is the most important thing to teach in school (and at home) along with the desire to learn.

<<Maybe but regardless of fiancial status, taxes are to be paid for. No exceptons.>> And that is the cause of the problem right there. I advocate revolution that will leave me Baron of Humber Valley :)

Firestorm> <<I think it would be better if it were in a 1-on-1 game show format myself.>> That could fund the prisons and the remainder can be set up into a trust fund with the interest from that fund going to cover exapnding Medicaid to the working poor. And tehy say we social darwinists don't have a heart ;)

Dezi> <<Um, my parents were briefly on welfare before I was born. Part of the stress of the times, and being newly weds in not a very wealthy area. Kinda glad _they_ weren't harvested. Maybe you should amend that to welfare-lifers or something.>> Those are the situations where I would see welfare as appropriate, as well as for soldiers with families, but only to an extent as someone only making $30,000 a year has no right begging if he has 10 kids.

<<Yeah, but how long did he wait after she was comatose (or vegetable-ized or whatever). I mean, did he wait like 8 years, or did he just hop on the next train that came along. I mean, he coulda looked at it this way: His wife was basically dead to the world. He grieved and moved on, kinda. On the other hand, he stayed married to her, because he cares about what happens to her. Kinda like a widower keeping a photo album or mementos or whatever, except not. That other girlfriend, though, imagine her take on things. "Yeah, Mom, I met this guy. He's really great. When's the wedding? Oh, well see, he's married, but his wife has the mental capacity of a carrot. But we get along real great!" *Dezi ducks incoming verbal abuse*>> Well, I am known to be tough on my gender...nay, downright draconian as I thought about castrating msyelf when I lost my virginity. As I see it, he can see about voiding or terminating the marriage contract in that situation, but he didn't want to give up that multi-million dollar settlement. I admit I am greedy, but even I have a sense of honor.

<<But really, what if they really are delusional. What if they really are just fooling themselves. What if they just won't accept the fact that their daughter is not coming back to them.>> That's a value statement. Now, I believe that teh currenst ystem is bad and often drains a family financially, but if her family doesn't want the plug pulled and her life support is already paid for by a settlement (basically this should cover the next forty years), I don't see the problem. Now, her ratbastard hubby should not get thos emillions if the plug were pulled. His decision to committ adultery shoudl exclude him from the money which is the only reason he wants the plug pulled.

<<Air bubble? And that's the first time I've seen you cuss.>> Is that a profanity? I was referring to injecting that into the bloodstream, which kills someone (or so it was mentioend in Red Sky at Morning).

<<On the other hand, at least he wasn't doing his wife. That would be kinda weird. "Oh honey, not tonite." Eww. :P>> That reminds me of Kill Bill :)

<<Where does "Bud-Clare" come from>> Clare is her Confirmation name, but I am not as certain about Bud (I guess to show she is amicable).

<<Could there be a Soylent Blue?>> Don't forget Soylent Yellow. I have the DVD as well as the Omega Man.

I also recommedn Albuquerque, NM. It was the seat of a Spanish Viceroy so it has a good history to it. If you get New Orleans I would also endorse it and give you lots of help in finding places to stay.

The only problem I have with Wal-Mart is that is a symbol of the suburbs, but I vastly prefer Target anyway.

Damien> <<Democracy and communism are not opposites>> Not as much as Communism and sweet lovely anarcho-capitalism, bit I think you may be includng benign forms of Socialism with Communism.

<<there is a point between Democracy and communism where there is an ideal society>> I may agree even though St. Thomas Moore's Utopia was written as a joke and I quite believing in ideal societies when I turned 10.

I consider America too much of a nanny state, and my aversion to Communism is more due to my capitalist beliefs, and even my mother who thought Marx's ideals were beautiful was also strongly anti-union and while she was apolitical, she didn't want Amazing Grace sung at her father's funeral because the song reminded her of Jimmy Carter.

And now I call on Kaioto to add his two cents...Oh great spirit of the persecuted Massachusettes conservatives, I call upon you to add your wisodm!!!!

I also summon Pistoff to demonstrate a flame war :)

Bud-Clare- <<But now, _now_ I shall have enough time to take over the world.>> Not if I get to it first! :P

People at the mall were morons today. First, at the ATM, people were NEAR it, but not ON it, or in line. I waited a few, to see if they needed to use it, but they stood NEXT to it for a few, with a wad of cash in hand, no less. So, there being no line at the ATM, I approached. Like a minute later (as I'm entering my pin, no less), they yell at me, saying they were in line. WHAT line? I gave you the darn chance to use it before me, but you blew it. Sorry you had to wait 30 damn seconds to get more money, despite the fact I saw you (stupidly), with a HIGE wad of cash in your hand...

Later, I was waiting for the bus to take me back to school. For this one driver, the pickup/drop off point is near this big green dumpster by sears (and it's a METAL disposal dumpster, so it doesn't even smell or anything). Anyway, this group of about 6-7 bous walk past, muttering things, half to themself, half to me, saying thins like, "yeah, why don't you just live there?" ASSES. I just said, "That's nice, did your MOMMY teach you that, or are you just trying to boost your ego to compensate for something?" Not the best comeback, but the only thing on my mind. I hate peope who make fun of others for no reason. Does it really feel THAT good to insult someone without cause and (possibly) upset them? I'm used to most of that stuff, but still, that doesn't mean I needed to be treated like that...

And my parents WONDER why I'm so damn anti-social. they tell me to go and make friends or hang out with the ones I have. 1)Im not entering a popularity contest 2) my friend's are not meant to serve me and hang out wioth me when I want them too, and 3) they never talk to their friends, so they can shut up when they beg me to talk to mine (it's been like 10 years since they've talked to their best friends, whom are married to each other, and all 4 have each other to thank for their marriages).

I love my parents and all, but sometimes, they annoy the hell out of me...

Blah Blah blah, blah blah blah blah, blah blah, blah blah, blah blah blah.

Sorry for the venting, feel better now. I come from a fam,ily of comapliners, and the PMS doesn't help right now either (though I think I'm a bit calmer than I thought I'd be).

WARNING! GROSS STUFF!
I heard Cleo caught a (big) chimpmunk this week, and brought it to the door, with it's head bitten off...my dad threw it in the bushes ot get rid of it, but it was back the next day, with shorter legs....I TOLD them she'd be a hunter, and that we should start taking bets on how much kill she brings to the door...I wish I could've seen my sister's reaction to this, she oblivious to Cleo's "evil" side....Lola brings kill now and then, but she'll whine until she knows you've seen it, then promptly eat it (I thought when they bring prey to the door, they're doing it for YOU, not themselves!).
END GROSS STUFF.

I'll shut up now, before PMS and complantative nature takes over and this turns into a 5-page rant on random and stupid stuff...

** Warning Bad Spelling ahead... this is your final warning a rant is in this post somewhere, if you find it .. uhh.. pat yourself on the back **

G. Baron> <What good has come of it,(communism)> the whole idea of communism as all bad is mainly indoctrined in the states, Yes it has its bad sides, and is easily abused, but there are ways to work around this. Democracy and communism are not opposites. I'm not saying that the current versions out there are not flawed, but there is a point between Democracy and communism where there is an ideal society
but thats just my opinion(s) I could be wrong

**oh oh rant alert. But it is informal***

re: this whole go back and kill people:> (seriously) well lets just rock the boat, lets kill the most evil, greedy, and deranged member of the history of the 20th century:
Thomas alva Edison.
-Yes he perfected the lihtbulb, but he didnot invent it.
-he is well known and documented to have supported several Grad students as they work their way through Collage, but at the price he got the rights to any inventions/ideas they came up with while under his "Tutalage"
-His ego demanded that he Have no equal, if he couldn't get rights to an invention, he would personally ruin the individual, in wealth, status, and land.
-One of his victoms was a genius by the name of Nikola Tesla, (the inventor of AC current). Tesla became hated by edison because when a mutual friend sent tesla to Edison's for tutalage the letter he sent said "I Know two greats in this world, yourself [edison] and this boy [tesla]"
-He gave tesla an "impossible" challenge to optimize one of ed's factories (if he could, he would get 50 grand), 3 months later tesla was done, and edison told him it was an american joke. (read: didn't pay him) tesla called him an idiot. and made a life long enemy.
After tesla invented AC current Edison did everything he could to destroy and discredit his invention, (going beyond just buisness practices)
And one of the main thing about ac current is that its range is huge, thousands of miles/kilometers, while the range of Dc current is under a mile (little more than a kilometer) so that DC current was for the elite, AC current was for everyone
and to prove the "unsafeness" of ac current he was just evil
like taking on of tesla's ac generators, not only using it for the first electric chair (after getting tesla to admit that ac could theoretically be used for more humane executions) Edison purposly sae up the enerator wrong, so that instead of a clean kill, it slowly cooked the unfortunate inmate alive.
Edison was not above doing demonstrations on the streets for the common people. after a while all the stray animals living near edisons house had dissapeared, they met their unfortunate ends in Edisons public displays on the "unsafeness" of AC... BY publicly ELECTROCUTING them!!!!
after tesla released his patents on ac current (Impossibly valuable today, a rough estimat put them at approx $150,000,000,000!!!) so that the comman man wouldn't have to pay extra, edison then ran tesla's buissnesses to the ground, and left him to die poverty stricken.
Nice man eh?
**end rant**
Wow.. I Actualy did a post of more that 3 lines
enjoy
Nuff Said!!

FAFSA time! blah. I can't wait til I graduate. No more retail. I did find out that if I were looking for a job I my two main choices for one in my field with no work experience are Albakerque (I'll never be able to spell that, ever) New Mexico, and Richmond Virginia. On the one hand, Richmond is a capitol, and could have lots of nifty capitol-type stories to cover, but on the other hand it is Virginia. And then there's New Mexico. I've never been there. Any reports?

Hellcat: You stole my color! ('S ok. :) ) I was confused...
I do like the blueberry idea though, reminds me of some good muffins).
<Sadly I don't know too much about family genaelogy> We really don't know too much of my father's side.
Ow! My elbow!
<I'm lacking my caffeine.> Passes a cappuccino. :)

Lain.<no, dezi dont no nothing, poor thing.> Sigh. You're right. I do no nothing. :( But.. I do KNOW alot about alot of things! Even... (*dramatic music* dun dun dun!) Sarcasm! :) Now I feel better!
<krispy kreme is the devil! > No no no. Wal-Mart is the devil. Krispy Kreme is one of those little sub-demon minions that dance around with pitch forks and glee saying in little high pitched voices: Yes sir! We love you sir! Grant us your bidding sir! Or something like that.

Fire Storm:<I personally think that the world is BETTER off due to people like Hitler, Marx and Stalin.> And to think the whole conversation started with Jonathon Brandis.

<I like it on toast. > With just a pinch of cinnamon and a scrambled egg.
<Soylent Green> Hmmm. Could there be a Soylent Blue? I wonder what that would be. I said soylent green is people to my mom and she is now thoroughly confused.

Bud-Clare:<I don't think it means what you think it means.> Pedagogy. I never knew what that word meant. So I asked my Spanish teacher. Now I know, and knowing (or no-ing) is half the battle.
<I'm bright, but I move like molasses> So lazy? Lazy can be good. :)
<You have my blessing.> Yea! Thank you oh great one.

Where does "Bud-Clare" come from (and don't say your mom and dad or a laboratory jar). The name. It reminds me of tulips sitting around, drinking beer and getting wasted.

Lynati:<my mother was a hamster> That would explain _some_ things. Well, probably not, unless you can have 13 babies at once. And then get pregnant again, immediately after.

Gside:<they always trot out the same one for pictures> That was about as funny as the green mushrooms.
<As long as it gives me an excuse to eat more meat, I'm all for it.> Maybe carbs are really soylent blue....

GB:<is a jackass who has cheated on her and has a pregnant girlfriend> Yeah, but how long did he wait after she was comatose (or vegetable-ized or whatever). I mean, did he wait like 8 years, or did he just hop on the next train that came along. I mean, he coulda looked at it this way: His wife was basically dead to the world. <the circumstances and willingness of family to keep her alive > But really, what if they really are delusional. What if they really are just fooling themselves. What if they just won't accept the fact that their daughter is not coming back to them.
<using an air bubble > Air bubble? And that's the first time I've seen you cuss.
<He has two kids from anotehr woman while she has been in a coma, > On the other hand, at least he wasn't doing his wife. That would be kinda weird. "Oh honey, not tonite." Eww. :P
<poutine> What's that?
<Does it feature the greatest comedian of modern politics, Bob Dole? > No it involves office workers doing a digestive system disorder version of the macarena. It frightens me.

Whitbourne:<Re: sarcasm - It's a subtle art to be sarcastic without just sounding like an arsehole, and sacrasm should never be mistaken for wit. That is all. :-)> Excellent definition. :D

Question:<if they turned all the people on welfare and in jail into organ farms > Um, my parents were briefly on welfare before I was born. Part of the stress of the times, and being newly weds in not a very wealthy area. Kinda glad _they_ weren't harvested. Maybe you should amend that to welfare-lifers or something. Welfare is a good idea, in its ideal. But it is something that can be easily abused by the less ambitious. Yes, I believe amendments are in order (to the program itself too). A lot of people are just too damn lazy.

Speaking of lazy, I'm done for now.

Whitbourne, oops! I stand corrected. I'm not passionately political so haha. I've misintrepreted. But i must admit NDP here in Nfld want to raise taxes on houses or something. I'm not that fond of them either but Liberals are my main disapproved party. I get too excited at the word "liberal". Oy! I'm going to hide now *hides in a snowbank*

Hellcat> I never said I supported the Liberals. I said I was liberal. It's the difference between "small-l" and "big-L" liberals.

Big-L - Liberals - members of the Liberal Party of Canada, a recognized political party, or their provincial party counterparts. Examples: Paul Martin, Jean Charest, Dalton McGuinty, Anne McLellan, etc.

Small-l - liberals - those with the political philosophy that the state has a responsibility to help ensure the welfare of its citizens, that ability to pay should not be a bearing on whether you recieve special services, etc. Those with a left wing bent. I'm one of these. I don't support the Liberal Party - like I said to Green Baron, I'm a member of the NDP.

Thomas! How dare you brign up Great Big ass and “Sh**ing News”! You know you are treading on thin ice mister. I'll drag a polar bear to Korea if i have to lol (ouch on that thought! haha)

“We have all this money to give out EI but we couldn't just let someone in her situation get a tax break. Maybe if Newfoudndland reduced taxes and welfare, you could get some growth into the province.”
Maybe but regardless of fiancial status, taxes are to be paid for. No exceptons. I like ur point though then hopefully people have decent jobs and not sit around waitign for a “allowance”

“I rate Catholci schools ahead of public schools though not for religious reasons..more due to the fact that the kids have parenst who give a damn and the lack of a teacher's union in my HS. I also don't think gun laws woudl hav etoo much influence...as they work so well in DC ;) ::kisses::”
*kiss* True. My school was too borin` to be violent and whatnot. Outside though was a bit questionable. No school’s perfect, not even catholic.

And you get to take me there in August ::kisses:: Now we jsut have to make certain your dad drives so we get there in 8 hours instead of two days.”

I wish I had my friend’s dad. He would get us their 5-6 hours haha. Sadly the new "cheaper" flight has like 105 bucks worth of taxes alone so it's not really cheap. Oy. I hate Newfoundland's insane tax!

Whitbourne, Martitimes should be recognized too. Don't getme started with mainlander jokes ;) My mom's from Nova scotia so haha I'm loaded. You might hate me and my dad for it haha.

Also I hate to break it to you...ever since Tobin betrayed newfoundland, there's no doubt in my mind that Liberals are usually cod livered wussies. In more nicer terms, suns up me arse. ;)

I'm just wondering...do you know Gerry Byrne? He's a liberal. *snickers* and a plain mommma's bye wuss. He got badmouthed and damn did he run allll the way home, crygn for his mommy. Naturally you would think his very young son would do that. Poor kid. hahaha.

See where i'm coming from. I can go on and on ALL the way up Canada's PMs, my fave bash is Joey. Good ol' Joey who has...questionable...uh mob supporters...*mumbles more profane things*. Do shed some light on Liberals who are brave. How can you still support Liberals after this sponsorship scandal? I do know where you're coming from but I still remain skeptical. I see your logic but I still question it. I'm not closed minded if it's implied in this. I hate politicans. I loathe them so them doing "good" is rather quesitonable...

That's all for now. I'm too tired to think 100% *yawns*

I think it would be better if they turned all the people on welfare and in jail into organ farms for all those tax paying citizens in need of organ transplants. And for thosse who are too unhealthy to give well we can just strand them in the North Pole and harvest the survivors as conscripted cannon fodder.

Whoops, huge type. In the paragraph on communism, that should read "I don't think much good came from COMMUNISM on a macroscopic scale". That sort of changed the whole meaning of that sentence. (embarassed laugh)
Whitbourne

IP: 142.177.154.69

Gah, there's so much stuff to wade through that I'd be typing for days if I tried to address it all.
First of all, I got my papers yesterday to join the Medical Officers Training Program through the Canadian Navy. Starting this September, I'll be a commissioned officer (Acting Sublieutenant through med school, Sublieutenant in residency, and then Lieutenant once I'm finished) with a signing bonus, a salary (over 40k a year while I'm in school, and 50k a year when I finish), tuition, books and instruments paid for, paid vacation and paid leave to attend conferences, and the chance to start building a career in public and international health. I'm really excited about this, and I'm also pointing this out to show that not all of us liberals are complete wusses. :-) (I even asked if being an officer meant I couldn't be engaged in politics, and they said that as long as I wasn't representing myself as the official voice of the Canadian Forces I could write all the letters and go to all the rallies I wanted. :-)

The gun control discussion's sort of petered out. There were a lot of good points raised; Lain, I'll have to check out the NRA in closer detail to see if what you were talking about is the case. I still see no problem with reasonable gun control, though, and I still maintain that gun issues are less important than things like health care and the environment. Once I'm prime minister (and this will happen, trust me :-) then government priorities will reflect that.

Re: Communism - I don't think much good came out of capitalism on a macroscopic scale. It seems to me that it's a system of government designed for smaller areas than full fledged nations. I don't think much good comes from laissez-faire capitalism either, where everything is decided by the market. The best way lies, as it so often does, in the centre with a balance. Some things are just too important to let profit motive be the primary consideration, and when private companies run everything, then their loyalty is to shareholders, not to citizens. Markets should be allowed to decide a large share, but there needs to be centralized consideration of the necessary services of government; health care, education, defence, social safety nets, etc. Otherwise, too many people get left behind, and while the Internet trendiness of advocating social Darwinism has sort of reared its dismal head here as everywhere, in reality letting "survival of the fittest" reign in an open market just leads to widespread poverty, crime, social unrest, and eventually, potentially, terrorism and destructive anarchy.

Newfoundland: That extends to the Maritimes, too. Not many people in central Canada think much of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island, either. One of my favourite suggestions was that we take a page from the pequiste handbook and amalgamate, join with Newfoundland, then hook up with Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont (the three ignored states of the union), and have the seven provinces/states become their own country and separate from Canada/the States, respectively. We'd probably be poor, but at least we'd have some wicked parties. :-)
Welfare fraud is not as huge a problem as you're making it out to be, and it's not the cause of our provinces' financial woes. For one thing, inequal shares of oil and gas revenues is a huge inequity, and also, our governments have not shown the greatest financial acumen. The Binns government on PEI just last night spent millions of dollars buying the loans for an insolvent company that's been plagued by financial debts for years, and here in Nova Scotia, just after crying that the budget was showing a huge deficit and universities would have to give back a million dollars it had gotten in the last budget, Premier Hamm went and gave everyone a $155 gas rebate that every economist and most ctizens said was useless and unwanted. (I'd be churlish and point out that Binns and Hamm are Tories, but the Liberal government in Ottawa has shownitself more than willing to be just as financially stunned).

Re: sarcasm - It's a subtle art to be sarcastic without just sounding like an arsehole, and sacrasm should never be mistaken for wit. That is all. :-)

it has never been disputed that henry ford (of the ford motor company) gave quite a substantial amount of money to the national socialist party of germany under hitlers rule, 40 thousand dollars to reprint anti-jewish pamphlets in german or somesuch. he got a medal for it, too. he was praised in "mien kampf" as "the only man in america free from jewish control". his book, "the international jew" (also known as "the eternal jew") was extremely popular in germany and was responsible for "converting" many people (by their own admission) to the hatred of the jewish people.

hitler had a life-size portrait of ford near his desk at ye olde nazi HQ and said that he regarded henry ford as his "inspiration."

Mara> << imagine if there was coverage it would have hurt all those precious girls who were 12 in the early mid-nineties, and moreso make them feel guilty for forgetting about their teen idol.>> Makes me wonder about the reaction fo women reaching middle age and news of the Coreys dying...granted this was before my time. This talk of child actors remidns me of that movie Dickie Roberts.

Greg X> <<Now say you could go back in time to the early 20th century to Austria and you see an angry artist who got rejected from an art school about to hang himself. I think anyone who'd try to talk this artist out of it would feel bad when this said artist goes on to be responsible for the deaths of millions.>>

Even if you let him hang himself, that may change nothing as to what happened. The Nazis existed befoe Hitler discovered them, though they were a pretty ragged organization. Granted, if I could go back in time, I'd work toe stanblish ties between the US and the newly formed German Empire in the 1870s, then when WWI hits,w e'd side with the Kaiser, and a victorious German Empire would elimiate the atmosphere for Hitler, plus the Ottoman Empire would maintain control of the Middle East, there would be no Saudi king and the Bin Laden family wouldn't gain therir millions from construction. Also, the US and German could grant Ireland complete freedom from Britain, though British Canada may lead an atatck southward or declare independence to avoid a US counterattack.

Of course Moseley could be the British Hitler figure instead.

Spike> Thanks for teh info. I haven't seen her post in ages.

DPH> <<Better question: If I send somebody back in time to kill Karl Marx when before he reached the age of 5, would things be better or worse? [I'm referring to preventing the publication of books that led to communism.]>> You forgot about Engels, the self-hating son of a wealthy industrialist or for that matter Dickens who had Marx convinced Britain was ready for Revolution, though I think Dickens was just having fun with Marx.

And why not go before Marx. Jean Jacques Rosseau inspired Marx (Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Castro, Chomsky, etc) and Hegel (Hitler, Mussolinni, Franco, Buchanan, Nasser, Hussein).

Another option is to take Marx to our own time and hsow him the evils of hsi philosophy, and also get him to read Ayn Rand novels until he has seen the light :)

I'd also say just lock Anne in SJ's bedroom and he'll keep her busy :) You'll never hear from her again.

<<not as many as yours, nyah!!! ;)>> But even you agree adopting your system is a bad idea. Larry Elder has soem great ideas that involve braking the power group of the Medical Mafia known as the AMA. There are stuff doctors do that could be performed by an Army medic (who may posses nothing beyond a HS diploma and high-speed 91 series training at Ft Sam Houston).

<<*as lain is typing on the computer, the face of john ashcroft materializes in the television set behind her. sensing that someone is watching, lain turns around to see, but the visage of ashcroft has vanished*

It prolly would have been a tougher sell with out it, and they might not have made it at all. It's easier to rule evily over people when they just look at you like star-crossed sheep. Saying: Just 'cause I said so! doesn't go as far as: Do it for the nation! The mother land! The community!>> Don't forget about social justice, another buzz word that has been so misused, especially by Liberation Theologists who shoudl be focusing on creating wealth (and maybe giveing a slight larger chunk fo new bigger pie to the poor) than just redictributing it. Granetd many nasty right-wing leaders don't understand this fact either as El Salvadors ruling class was condemned by Americans who owned larger houses than they did.

<<Moore would endorse a cheeseburger if he thought it was in his best interests. :)>> But only if it was a double pounder with bacon and the side order was poutine instead of just fries :)

<<BTW, is anyone else at least a little weirded out by the new Pepto-Bismol commercial?>> Does it feature the greatest comedian of modern politics, Bob Dole?

DPH> <<Anyways, discussing altering history is rather pointless, unless you have the means to do so.>> It is fun, though. I recommend Harry Turtledove. He is the Mac Daddy of Alternate History.

Andrea> <<One, I do not condone the murder of any person, unless it's is accidental in the case of self defense (yeah, that was sort of a smart ass reply). But more importantly, you'd screw up the timeline. Even one small change in histoy can forever alter the future, for better or for worse. I don't know about you, but i'd not my life suddenly altering due to someone going back in time to kill either one of them.>>

Timecop II uses this premise. As for killing people, it can be useful to get rid of occasional irritants and dangerous allies who outlive their usefulness. I forget what Machiavelli said about assasination.

Dezi> <<While I'm at it, that dude in Florida should be allowed to pull the plug>> The Schiavo case. Normally I'd agree with you, except that

1) The hospital has supplied the money to pay for her life support so it costs her husband and family nothing (unless she's still ina coma in 40 years)

2) The husband is a jackass who has cheated on her and has a pregnant girlfriend. He wants to pull the plug to get the settlement money (I only advocate that tatic for people with parents on life support). He has two kids from anotehr woman while she has been in a coma, making him a cheating bastard who should have certain extremities on the business end of a cigar cutter.

3) The wife's famiy wants her alive. While I do favor pulling the plug as the general rule, the circumstances and willingness of family to keep her alive would make thsi oen exception where I wouldn't favor it.

In most otehr circumstances (including my own parents) I'd favor pulling the plug or even using an air bubble if the parents were shitty to their kid.

Lain> <<both good and bad have come from the ideas of communism, therefore it would be better to take out the bad, than destroy the whole, would it not?>> What good has come of it, unless you refer to more benevolent forms of socialism and even that I'd arge the merits of.

Hellcat> << Newfoundland does have the oldest city in North America! Whoo!>> And you get to take me there in August ::kisses:: Now we jsut have to make certain your dad drives so we get there in 8 hours instead of two days.

In Palistan when prisons are crowded, they draw straws to see hwo gets garroted. iF we use that system we wouldn't need a death penalty.

Heritage> The Forsyths and Logans were originally French add a "de" to both names and were Barons for a time. The Logans lost their holdings for trying to assasinate King James VI (I), but theydid well with the Hannovers and George I sent Colonel George Logan to Charleston in 1690.

The Forsyths were in Scotland longer and in the 18th century they meoved to Halifax only to move to London three generatiosn later and my great great grandfather Harry Douglas Forsyth moved to NYC afetr teh Civil War and later New Orleans when he met his father-in-law Bradish Johnson. Bradish was English descended and his father was a Customs agent at the Port of New Orleans....aka privateer. The Johnsons were opportunists who went to Nova Scotia during the American Revolution and switched corporate HQ from New Orleans to NYC afetr Gettysburg. They also provided much of Harry Douglas's initial wealth. sadly my great grandfatehr, gradfatehr, and father all lacked ambition and there was that whole stock market crash.

The Villeres (my father's mother's family) were French aristos and Acadians.

My mother's side is mainly Irish and German and they all came to NYC between 1840s-1890s. The Worthingtons may have been there longer as they were related to Wallis Simpson.

But I think I've mentioned all of that ad nauseam before.

I also serevd in Vietnam...no that's John Kerry, but I will be in Vietnam in July :)

<A land war cannot, repeat: CANNOT be won in Russia>
But what about in the modern era with rapid equipment delivery via air? Scorched earth wouldn't mean a lot when you are airdropped supplies every so often.
(Yeah, then it would lead to a guerilla war afterwards, but still...)

Question: <Are you trying to imply that Stalin actually did a good and decent job?>
And why not? Hitler united Germany, led the country through a great economic time, and was in charge of a fairly successful army.
But the good he did does not overrule the bad. Same with Stalin.
It's all about proportions and details.

Lain: <plus theres the part about why we are even discussing this because there really is no point..>
It is the most controversial topic that has been discussed in the CR without it evolving into a flame war.

I personally think that the world is BETTER off due to people like Hitler, Marx and Stalin.
Those people did horrible things, yes. But now what they did is known and maybe it will shed the light on people like that in the future. Remember, all of those people mentioned were in power BEFORE the nuclear age, or at least before their country gained nuclear weapons and ICBMs. Imagine if Hitler had ICMB MIRV nukes! There would be nothing left! Now, and especially thanks to media, we can see leaders from around the world and they can be stopped before they get that far because now we know what to look for even better.
Also, they opened our eyes to the horrors of humanity. We can't simply ignore things, and because of them, more people DON'T ignore things that frelling bad.

I tend to lean towards the line that history shouldn't be altered. The future, now, that is a matter entirely different.

Felt kinda left out on the heritage thing: I'm only a few generations removed from Greek and Italian on my mom's side. My dad's side has been in the States for a while, but they were British, Irish, German, and Polish... I think that's all. *shrug*

Dezi,

"I'd like to save the fritter, or at least try one, they sound good. But I live in evil Indiana, and all they have here is Krispy Kreme. Not even Dunkin' Doughnuts!"

Well not for long some American (the Wendy's foodchain) bought Tim Hortons so in a couple of years, you might have 'em everywhere. lol I demand you try it! Mmm good. Try the chicken noodle soup too. It's to die for. Oh and cappinco if you like a sugar-caffeine high haha.
I have to ask, Dezi, do you get snow in Indiana at all? I'll envy you if you don't. :P

Everyone sounds interesting in their heritage. I sadly don't know my true one since I was adopted. I was said to look Urkanian or Russian. So I'll state what I do know so I won't feel left out haha. My dad's side is French and British. My mom's side is Scottish and/or Irish with bit of Polish..oh and a bit of African too. Sadly I don't know too much about family genaelogy.

(forgive me typos. I'm lacking my caffeine. God I need a nap!)

OK I'll weigh in on the heritage thing, since it just seems so popular! :)
Mexican, German, Polish, Swedish, English, Irish. In various amounts. My sisters, being half Korean, add an interesting new aspect to the whole thing.

Hellcat:I'd like to save the fritter, or at least try one, they sound good. But I live in evil Indiana, and all they have here is Krispy Kreme. Not even Dunkin' Doughnuts!

Vinnie: <It's called sarcasm! Perhaps you should learn it.> I have. In fact, as I recall, last time we got into it, you had barely a vague grasp of the concept. What'd ya do, study? And I still don't see how me being entitled to my opinion is an arguement _against_ democracy, I even tried reading that one in a sarcastic tone. Still doesn't make sense and totally debases whatever point you were trying to make.

Gside:<Same place they did for the Blues Brothers> I need to watch this movie. I just realized I have never. I do know though, that there is a scene that has a boiler in it (in the background or something semi-prominent) and that boiler was made in my home town, Kewanee, ILL. It has Kewanee stenciled on it. I need to see this, so I can represent! :)

Bud-Clare:<Pity him, for he is dim> Believe me, I do. I do like the use of that phrase, it sounds good. May I borrow it to insult various people around me? :)

Ok I'm in such a weird mood, and I have a newspaper to put together. This will be an interesting day. And for lunch I will make mash potatoes-in-a-box! Damn the carbs! (that whole thing is soo stupid anyway).

<On the news, Danny boy is trying to get Newfoundland...> I have no clue whatsoever about eastern Canadian politics (and very little clue about the rest of Canadian politics, for that matter) and, for some reason, I am disturbed by this lack of knowledge.... What is a Hibernia? and does it come with blueberries as well? :)

I only talk politics because I like to make a good impression. I only know bits and pieces. I’m only semi political. I know a lot of Newfoundland stuff because I’m wondering why Newfoundland ever joined Canada. Hibernia is off east coast of Newfoundland (Grand Banks area). It is a oil rig that supposedly would boost newfoundland economy but it did not. Why? Our politicans (provincal, federal…all levels really) are corrupt and Newfoundland is still in a hole. Our premiers, even our first one, Joesph Smallwood, are all corrupt and greedy bastards who steal money fromr newfoundland and its ppeople. The economy is now hardly there…we’re a welfare province who is like 800 million or so in debt. A lot fo people don’t know about Newfoundland because we’re seen as microscopic. Even mainland Canada sometimes don’t even know where or what Newfoudnland is. It’s a shame really but I’m proud Gargoyles acknowledge it. Newfoundland does have the oldest city in North America! Whoo!

Newfoundland has a lot of blueberries and I bet we lacked the money to make the filling. My favourite doughnut is dyign out. Save my blueberry fritter! Tim hortons won’t be the same no more. Damn! *sulks*

Oberon's definitely a townie. In fact he has all the look about him of being a Tibbo, out of Mount Pearl. :-)

Ancestry: I'm an even split. One-half Acadian, one-half Scot.

Time-travel to change history - I'm a fatalist, so I highly suspect that going back and killing someone like Hitler or Marx or Pop Innocent II wouldn't significantly change much at all. It'd change details, obviously, but the end result wouldn't be all that much different from what we know happened. Maybe killing Marx would have prevented communism (which I'm not at all convinced is a good thing - communism itself is not evil, but the interpretations in practise have been sorely lacking in goodness) but just as likely Engels would have found someone else...or maybe someone else would have come up with the idea altogether.

My friend hangs out at this bar that needs a band to attract people on Thursdays. So he recommended my band, and I was supposed to go talk to the guy about it tonight. I cleared my whole night and went the whole way out there, and the guy wasn't there, even though he told us to show up tonight - he forgot he was supposed to be there! Grr... what a load. This sucks.

Sorry, just needed to bitch to someone.

Hm, good point. I have to get back to you on that. Newfoundland’s relatively safe so hunting rifles are just used with common sense…until you get your dumbasses that like to use it in crimes. My dad has a manchester, something else and a magnum. Loads of people here have all kinds of rifles and sometimes illegical ones. One dude has like a army issued weapon which technically you’re not supposed to use. I hate guns. So many accidents about dumbass shooting a person mistaking them for a moose is insane… That’s just my view on it. Naturally I wouldn’t know much about gun control since the main problem in Newfoundland is outmigration (due to lack of opportunities and jobs).

Well I’m a bit annoyed today because of the news. On the news, Danny boy is trying to get Newfoundland to be the ultimate “principal” benefacter of Hibernia. This B.S. been going on since Mulroney announced Newfoundland getting the “prinicapal” control over all of Hibernia in 1988. Newfoundland was said to be “prinicpal benefactor” by the Atlantic Accord! Argh and it’s what 2004 and we just get like 2 cents a barrel for oil…I’m very sketpical of this. Hibernia is better off sunken like the damn Titanic. Argh…it’s like this neverending cycle where Newfoundland will never ever get the deserved amount of money from Hibernia oil.

That's my rant. A bit offtopic but couldn't help it. Yeah... *plays with cat*

Unlikely. Germans didn't have the man power to do anything of the sort.

<Boom, WWII comes around and Russia would still be in the same shape it was in during WWI and probably be easily conquered because Russian troops wouldn't be ready for war. >

How do you think Hitler got so far in the Eastern Front in World War II? It was partially due to the fact that Stalin purged the upper echelons of the officer corps. So basically yeah the Soviets were pretty much unprepared.

Question

Question - <Are you trying to imply that Stalin actually did a good and decent job?> Consider the alternatives that could have happenned in Russia. If a revolution hadn't replaced the government and got Russia out of WWI, Russia probably would have been conquered by Germany. Boom, WWII comes around and Russia would still be in the same shape it was in during WWI and probably be easily conquered because Russian troops wouldn't be ready for war. The only difference would be the outcome of WWII, the US would have been the only superpower *and* the Marshall plan would have been applied to virtually all of Europe and Russia. No Cold War.

However, there is a very important by-product of the Cold War that we all love: the development of the Internet.

Gside - <Then who should be killed to stop the Inquisition and the Crusades?> Easy answer. The people who advocated mixing the Catholic Church with European politics, thus resulting in the corrupt Catholic Church. Plus those who were against distributing the bible in the language of the local people so that only the priests could read the word of God. If I wanted to stop the Inquisition and the Crusades, I would have to stop corruption from getting in the Catholic church.

Lain - < its not like he was the "lone communist" galloping off into the sunset.. http://www.marxists.org/history/ > Easy answer. Only kill those who advocated using violence to achieve their means.

z>> <<Stalin, who rose to power as a result of the Communist movement inspired by Marx, directly caused 40 million deaths in the Soviet Union alone>>
..not that im going to start condoning killing or anything but... if one were to do so, dont you think stalin would be a better choice than marx? both good and bad have come from the ideas of communism, therefore it would be better to take out the bad, than destroy the whole, would it not?

hellcat>> <<Whoo I like ya already haha>>

<<All the more reason to have laws on guns in Nfld and as a whole! Geez..>>
yes but uh... laws only work on people who OBEY them. the fact that someone is a criminal sorta gives the impression that they dont much care for the law in the first place. how would another "gun law" have helped catch the criminal and left the "law abiders" safe? o.O

vinnie>> << but then again that probably happens to all cat and computer owners>>
one of my cats likes to sleep on top of my computer monitor when im working... its nice and toasty warm up there, i guess. her little feet dangle over the edge of the screen, its cute.
<<And then you have to move on with life, can't live in the past now can we. That should be enough!>>
yes, of course. the problem comes when the "future" youre supposed to "move on" to looks the same or worse than the "present" youre in. THATS when people go for the suicide. if the present is sucky and the future looks bright and rosy, someone has something to look forward to - there is a "light at the end of the tunnel," if you will. unfortunately, not all tunnels seem to have lights at the end of them.
<<You do realize that starvation is probably one of the most horrible ways to die>>
yeah. that would suck. drowning, too. ive heard that freezing to death is pretty good - your brain compensates for the cold by hallucinating and sending you to a beach in tahiti :)

For a dictator, he was superb at his job: secret police, mass murder, etc. Watch "The Inner Circle" sometime. I love Tom Hulce in it- He' is ULTIMATE FANBOY.

DPH<Finally, somebody has accused me of doing illegal drugs. Let me explain at this way: you attack the archer not the arrow.>

Marx is not the archer. Stalin, Mao Lenin and company are the archers.

<Killing the person who committed the act won't do squat because occasionally there is somebody else just as motivated to commit the same act. On the other hand, if you take away the motivation to commit the act, you have a better chance of preventing the act than by killing the person.>

No offense, but you do realize that the primary motivation
would still exist for many of these revolutions that being the oppressive upper class or the extreme poverty that lead up to it.

<On the other hand, given what was happenning in Russia at the time Lenin/Stalin took power, if they hadn't acted, things potentially could have been worse during WWII. The Russian army was crumbling to pieces.>

Question> <<Only a bit??>>: I know the fandom surrounding the show is extraordinarially gay, but I'm not sure whether they wanted to make the show a little gay to develop the very gay following or if they wanted to make it very gay from the beginning.

DPH> <<If I send somebody back in time to kill Karl Marx when before he reached the age of 5, would things be better or worse?>>: Not too much different. The Russian revolutinon might have happened a bit later with someone other than Lenin at the head, but Marx wasn't a bad person himself.

To Kill Marx or Hitler...

Why not kill both?

I'd chose neither. One, I do not condone the murder of any person, unless it's is accidental in the case of self defense (yeah, that was sort of a smart ass reply). But more importantly, you'd screw up the timeline. Even one small change in histoy can forever alter the future, for better or for worse. I don't know about you, but i'd not my life suddenly altering due to someone going back in time to kill either one of them.

History makes my head spin.

Anyway, if I can get a hold of a scanner (and find my the pics, i know they are here someplace, I brought them with my to school), I'll scan my kitties in so you can finally see what they look like (seeing how I talk about them enough). The only story I can think of right now (and I wasn;'t even hime to witness it), was when cleo was playing the stairs. we have a basket on the steps, filled with my parents bills and mail to be taken upstiars and whatever. She got into it, and spread all the stuff EVERWHERE ALL over the staircase. When she got in trouble for it, she gave the "who, me?" look to my mom. She's such a riot...and VERY playfull. She actually plays with her toys on her own when they aren't all in the closet or under teh fridge or stove...Lola's a lazy ass...she sleeps mostly in my moms chair (or on mom's lap, in the same chair) all day.

I'll be interested to hear some of your pet stories...pets are cool!

Z - <In my opinion, things would be exponentially worse if one could travel back in time to change the past, even if it was to prevent millions of people from dying.> I'd have to agree. If we could travel back in time to change the past, who is to say that certain tragedies aren't necessary in order to have a better future?

Bud-Clare - <What the ?%$ have you been smoking?> Finally, somebody has accused me of doing illegal drugs. Let me explain at this way: you attack the archer not the arrow. On the other hand, given what was happenning in Russia at the time Lenin/Stalin took power, if they hadn't acted, things potentially could have been worse during WWII. The Russian army was crumbling to pieces. If a leadership change hadn't taken Russia out of WWI, things could have been a lot worse during WWII. There are too many variables to take into account when trying to play around with history and it's good thing we can't because we'd probably screw things up worse than they are. History is full of "necessary evil" that leads to something good happenning.

Anyways, discussing altering history is rather pointless, unless you have the means to do so.

DPH - <Better question: If I send somebody back in time to kill Karl Marx when before he reached the age of 5, would things be better or worse? [I'm referring to preventing the publication of books that led to communism.]>
In my opinion, things would be exponentially worse if one could travel back in time to change the past, even if it was to prevent millions of people from dying. As much as the aftermath of Marx's ideology sucks, I wouldn't want to tamper with free will. But the specific parameters of any given time travel opens up a whole new can of worms regarding a fatalistic universe vs. free will, predestination, and all that jazz...

Bud-Clare - <...You'd rather kill Marx than Hitler? What the &#%$ have you been smoking?>
Hitler killed 6 million Jews, and about 55 million died worldwide during WWII, a war which may have surfaced regardless of whether Hitler or someone else rose to power in Germany due to Germany's dreadfully desperate state at the time. Stalin, who rose to power as a result of the Communist movement inspired by Marx, directly caused 40 million deaths in the Soviet Union alone through killings and starvation in favor of industrial production. Thus, I don't think it would be all that rediculous if someone would rather kill Marx than Hitler, not that I would necessarily.

Peace

Weee! I just got my hair cut. And it didnt suck!

I had a realization today. Since all this bull with Brandon has gone down, I've rediscovered my want to draw. I got really really (really) burned out when I moved down here two years ago (animation will suck the life out of the less devoted) and have been slowly working my way up. Last year, I could draw if I had a purpose (political cartoons and such things) and now I have the actual want to draw again for no purpose but my own amusement! Sucky part is, I've been so engrossed in school, I hardly have the time. That and my desk (fav. drawing spot) is a mess and when I get home, I'm too tired to take the ambition to clean it off. It's not _bad_ just has important stuff there that I don't want to misplace. I know, excuses, excuses. My other little hurdle is: What to draw? I have so much in my head all of a sudden! Feels great though. :)

Firestorm: People! :)

Vinnie:<I Said that I feel sorry for them> I wouldn't. They got their wish. They have completely escaped from whatever had them down. Not that I'm anywhere near the brink (nor will I ever be) but, if I chose to spare you all of my existence, I wouldn't want your pity.
<then that's your problem not mine.> I see no problem. I see contradiction, but no problem. I'm happy with my views.
<most of the people here are insensitive> Yup, that's me! Ol' Ms. Insensitive! (So, _that's_ why I swerve for squirrels...)

GB:<Mooore endorsed him too> Moore would endorse a cheeseburger if he thought it was in his best interests. :)
<I soon learned he was crazy, but funny> I read a polit. toon once of him doing the macarena. It was really funny. The worst part was I could see him kinda doing it.
BTW, is anyone else at least a little weirded out by the new Pepto-Bismol commercial?

<third season of SeaQuest> Yeah, it surprised me, alot of the ones I thought I remembered as season 2 were really season 3. *shrugs* There goes my memory. Like the Cuban Missile Crisis one.
<dude from Jaws > See, I saw him first on Seaquest and then on Jaws, so I yell: Hey! That's the dude from Seaquest! ...and then people look at me funny...
<And Stripe is f'oogly> But he makes good music! :D
<So, we good?> Yeah, we good.

GregX:<I think some people should be encouraged to kill themselves> See, there we go, I'm not the only one.
<Some of these people need take themselves out of the gene pool> Unfortunately, these are the same ones that tend to breed constantly.

While I'm at it, that dude in Florida should be allowed to pull the plug. His in-laws are just fooling themselves. I say pull the plug. If she breathes, let her keep breathing. When she quits, she quits.

Hellcat:<Oh goody, I can torture people here! Yay! *dances* ;) > Uhhhh. ok.... Heh. You're funny!
<Avalon Pennisula!> hmmm. Sounds like Oberon's work...
<Blueberry Fritters > Is that really a 'fried critter' as I was led to believe? With blueberries on top!

Question:<They simply wouldn't have used communism to ascend to power and to back their mass killings.> Yeah, but they used the theory of communism to 'sell' their dictatorships in the making to the common folk. It prolly would have been a tougher sell with out it, and they might not have made it at all. It's easier to rule evily over people when they just look at you like star-crossed sheep. Saying: Just 'cause I said so! doesn't go as far as: Do it for the nation! The mother land! The community!

Ok bye bye now.

[Actually, Amy Cyrway recently became engaged to Brian Vigue, one of fandom's rare male artists, so I guess you can add them to the list of couples brought together by Gargoyles. ]
yeah, but they didn't meet in the CR (and I think the original poll was TGS CR romancers, not simply fandom couples) and they aren't usually very active (sadly, since we could use more fic and art from them) in the gargs fandom...I think they'd classify more as a Trans couple; I mean, they announced their engagement on Allspark, but none of the Gargie forums... anyway.
*half-shrug* Seems an odd thing to bother making a point about, I know, but I just felt like throwing my two cents in. heh.

You do realize that he just provided the ideology for these revolutions. People like Mao, Stalin, Lenin, Pol Pot and Kim Il Sung would still exist. They simply wouldn't have used communism to ascend to power and to back their mass killings. In fact much of what Stalin did was based on his paranoia and lack of humanity than his beliefs in the system.

A shocking thing today was something I just watched a second ago. Police arrested one of the perps who were involved in one of the armed robberies on Avalon Pennisula! I knew who he was! I went to school with him and he scared the hell out of everyone, especially girls. Very intimidating. He kept on repeating grades in junior high and high school. So much for Catholic schools (My school was Catholic school some years back). Damn, I can't believe it. My prediction was right on the ball when I graduated from high school. http://www.interpol.int/
<<What statements did he falsify>>
for one, ALL of those numbers were jiggered. he didnt use a consistent source for ANY of them (for the american statistics at least, the hightest number he could have possibly got would have been 8,000 or therabouts, not the 11,000 or so that he claimed. the only way for him to have gotten that number would have been to include suicides, self-defence, accidental, and police shootings... which is not really fair when he didnt do that for any others.) nor did he take into account things like population. of course a country with a bigger population is going to have higher murder rates - they have more people to be murdered. to be slightly more fair, he should have given statistics "per capita" or something. also, including japan in there isnt really very fair either, since japan has a COMPLETE ban on guns, meaning that if someone wants to murder someone in japan, they will choose a method other than a gun... which doesnt really change the outcome much...
<<I'll admit I don't know much about the NRA-KKK connection>>
there isnt one. now the film is very tricky here, because it doesnt come and say it outright - but i think the evil handshake between the klansman and the NRA guy and the suggestion that the NRA was founded the same year the KKK became an illegal terrorist organization seems to imply rather strongly that the NRA was formed by former KKK members who were mad that their group got smooshed. (theres also the part where that NRA guy goes on to pour some gasoline on the base of a cross and the klansman lights it but.. whatever) this is not true in the slightest. the NRA was formed by the government at the request of former "union" officers - and had nothing whatsoever to do with the "confederacy". the film also implies that the NRA was specifically formed to "keep guns out of the hands of black people" which is also not true. now yes, there were laws that did prevent black people from getting guns. this is not because the NRA is or was racist in any way - at least not any more so than the entire REST of society which forbade black people to do things like vote, or drink from the same water fountains as white people.
<<Those that use guns safely should be interested in reasonable controls to ensure that>>
yes. and, by and large, they are.
<<You could argue the same thing about dogs; if you license your dog does that mean the government will come and take it away>> no, but then again, i havent heard of any governments coming along and confiscating all licensed irish setters, either - whereas it does seem to be quite common with guns, wouldnt you agree?
<<I'm looking at it in terms of safetry; making sure that people who own guns use them safely>>
yes. im all about safety. so is, if youve read any of their stuff, the NRA.
<<making sure that people who shouldn't have guns cant purchase them legally>> yes, they have those laws already. only adults can buy guns. felons cant get guns. in the event that a felon is caught with one, they are in REALLY BIG trouble. everyone legally purchasing a gun from a dealer in the US of A needs to go through an FBI background check (to make sure they arent one of the people who is not allowed to have a gun). if any of the information you give to the dealer FOR this check is false, that is also a felony. if the gun dealer sells you the gun regardless, THAT is a felony. now sure, nearly any adult can buy a gun privately, because private citizens are not required to put their buyers through background checks (like selling nearly anything privately. nobody checks your credit if youre buying a car from someones driveway). nevertheless, the part about getting in big trouble if you are not allowed to have a gun and you get one still stands.
..what more would you suggest?
<<This has to be coupled with other initiatives; tougher sentences if you commit a crime using a firearm>>
things like "if you use a gun in a crime, it will automatically add 5 years to your sentance" are NRA initiatives, yes.
<<As for the NRA being a proponent of responsibility and safety, well, they aren't doing a good job of being visible>>
well, that is one of the things they were originally formed to do. the problem is though, they arent allowed. the NRA has one of the most effective gun safety programs for kids... but no school will let them in to teach it because theyre afraid the parents will flip about having the "evil NRA" there. its lose-lose for the NRA, what would you suggest they do?
<<focus lobbying on points similar to those I've proposed>>

(among LOTS of others im sure you could find if you tried)
also, quite a few of the things the anti-gun people are raging about the industry not including in their products (like "fingerprint recognition" so that only the gun's owner can shoot the weapon) are either highly impractical (what happens if theres a robbery and the "gun owner" is... in the bathroom? or not home? the spouse is screwed :P) - or do not even exist yet. how can they be mad that the gun manufacturing industry isnt include a feature that dosent exist? o.O

“Yo! 'Sup? Good to finally hear from you. (GB has been spreading...rumors... nah, just kidding). :)”
Dezi, thanks and I’m alright. Just freezing my ass off in the whims of Newfoundland winter. I feel lucky though since the mainland had a more hell of a beating with the 'weather bomb'. Newfoundland for once is actually ‘warmer’ than previous years. But I’m not convinced. I’m still cold!
Rumours, hm? I reckon I have to keep on eye on my guy hm? ;)

About the welfare discussion, I am quite skeptical on the benefits of it. Most Newfoundlanders ‘steal’ money even though they have a sound job, so those who really need it can’t get it. My aunt is worried about that because she has to have it to her own dismay. She worked for years and worked damn hard, and survived cancer but got laid off at thesame time. Stress galore i say. By the next year, my aunt got a job at another firm and the boss told her she would not be good enough without giving her a chance (the guy’s known around town to be a complete prick)…I may be a bit bias in this situation but it is tax month and she really need money to pay for her taxes and bills so it’s good she’s on EI. Good example for someone who needs it temporairly.

I’m unemployed myself for the time being but I refuse to go on EI. I am technically a college graduate searching for work until the fall…if I get accepted to the university. Hell will freeze over first.

Suicide is very controvestial to me, since there's a fine line about it. You got those terrorists, suicide bombers...then you have those very depressed people who just feel like giving up. I don't find that legal bit is very effective. Illegical to commit suicide. It's absurd in my mind for justice system to judge them like that. They usually just want someone to listen and not jugde them...I care when someone dies. To an extent of course. If Sadam killed himself, I'd be damn happy. Gah, suicide is very iffy these days...Sadly, one can't really stop suicides from happening. Maybe sometimes if someone just be there to listen and comfort.
I have to admit suicide is not my favourite conversation topic so I'm saying no more on it.

Lady Une being Anne of Green Gables? Ack! Someone swore I looked exactly like her once. Oy. I say this again. Oh the horror…Lady Une is much more cooler than Anne of Green Gables. I am possibly the only Canadian who really hates Anne of Green Gables. Being an English major, I’ll keep my mouth shut and refrain my nerdy rant. It got me in trouble in class before. Oops! Thomas heard at least half of this rant when he talks about it to torment me. Haha. I spare you all from it. I’ll behave. Lol

“How I so love you, my beloved ::kisses:: I am glad you posted and hope to see you here often.
In a place other than my hometown, I wouldn’t go alone at all costs.>> I'd also be with you, so you wont be alone.

Green Baron, I will frequent a bit to keep an eye on you! ;) *kiss* You know I love ya hun. Now you’re turning me into mush in front of people! :P

I’m glad I got you around. I feel safer then Whoo! Just don’t panic when I zoom down a steep hill….heehee, how I love the wind in my face.

Two years? I thought it was more than that! It felt like it. I can’t believe how family trees got me a guy. I have to call it serendipity. *goofy smile * Aren’t I mush goo goo over a bye!

Well, enough mush. *Ahems* I posted another long post. Wow. I didn’t expect I’d have so much to say. Anyways, my fingers are getting sore so bye for now.

By the way, I guess another couple is on TGS. Green Baron and I...WHOO! Ok ok I had too much coffee. Sue me lol

Better question: If I send somebody back in time to kill Karl Marx when before he reached the age of 5, would things be better or worse? [I'm referring to preventing the publication of books that led to communism.]

I've often wondered, from the Pretender series, what kind of simulation would require more than 1 Pretender, and the easiest answer I could come up with is trying to estimate how preventing or adding certain events would impact history.

If a person is determined enough to kill themselves then nothing will be able to stop them. I repeat NOTHING! We might slow such a person down and give them a chance to think about their actions but nothing will stop a determined sucide.

Yeah, I do think it's everyone's right to decide they no longer want to be here and just kill themselves. In the end, our own lives are something we should have power over, not have that power handed to someone else.

Actually, I think I'll take this a step further.

Personally, I think some people should be encouraged to kill themselves. Sorry, but I never bought the whole "Life is precious" bullshit you see getting spewed every where. Some of these people need take themselves out of the gene pool. I know what some of you are going to say, but it's true. Not only is it in the best interest of evolution, it's in the interests of those around already.

Now say you could go back in time to the early 20th century to Austria and you see an angry artist who got rejected from an art school about to hang himself. I think anyone who'd try to talk this artist out of it would feel bad when this said artist goes on to be responsible for the deaths of millions.

I could also name a lot more examples than that.

Green Baron"Or it can mark a new beginning in one's life and re-evaluation of priorities."

Yes, completely so.

Dezi"Please don't beat me. Feel free to make as many Michael Stipe jokes as a post can hold in leu of a beating. :) (Not that Stipe is all that hot, but the only celeb I give two craps about that could be comparible)".

Hey, you're entitled to your opinion, dear. As to perceived insensitivity-naw, he died, they didn't really make mention of it in the wider world, your comment was fair, if harsh. Us fangirls did mourn. (I feel for VenusAD, she took it harder than I did.) I imagine if there was coverage it would have hurt all those precious girls who were 12 in the early mid-nineties, and moreso make them feel guilty for forgetting about their teen idol. *SIGH*. In other news: Darwin grated on my nerves and I *LIKED* the third season of SeaQuest. It resonated more with being an actual sci-fi show, and had that one about temporal wormholes and the literal end of the human race because of technology- very Logan's Run- and such. And I adored Micheal Ironside while that dude from Jaws always struck me as being a Kevin Sorbo without muscularture and I *HATED* Hercules, stuck-up prick. The third season it seemed to get more into it's bearings than being a knock-off Star Trek in water. And Daggers-- why hath no one done anything interesting with Daggers since then? Poor Show. And Stripe is f'oogly. So, we good?

Vinnie:Because people only get one LIFE. Oh, wait! You probably believe in reincarnation. So you wouldn't understand.

Greetings to all today this Ash Wednesday. I spent the day in the field, but thankfully we were able to return home to sleep, but I'm back to the field tommorrow in 12 hours...but tommorrow is the day we break down equipement and all...so not too bad an experience.

Whitbourne> <<but if that's the case, then why is he still spokesman?>> Last I checked, he is no longer President. Also his appointment as President was made to get rid of teh militia group image that caused Heston and the elder George Bush to resign from the organziation abck in the late 80s. The NRA should be careful about the political conenctions as John Dingell a rather liberal Congressman from Dearborne (and I think his only conservative views are guns and abortion) is a supporter of them, plus Howard Dean is very pro-gun..of course in reality he is not as liberal as he appeared to be in the primaries.

Plus there are organizations like pink pistols which is trying to appeal to homosexuals, and I do believe Matthew Sheppard would be alive if he had a (Lain can submit the hand gun type as I am quite ingnorant to specifics)....but that isn't relevant to our discussiona s much as an interesting side note.

<<We disagree on health care as a right, I guess, but to me, it's an extension of protecting yourself. Not every procedure should be provided (Botox for wrinkles? Let me see your credit card) but I think that no one should have to go without life-saving or beneficial treament simply because they're worried about how they're going to be able to afford it.>> I can see your point, though when I think of rights, it's more of entitlements and I believe one is entitled to life, liberty, and the right to pursue happiness and property.

I do recall one issue that occurs with medicaid and with Canada's healthcare system as well as many systems...abuses.

Hellcat's dad occasioanlly gets some unscrupulous patients that see every doctor they can becuase well they're not paying for it directly. Dr. Davis gets a nastygram from the Government, but the drietr gest nothing. There should be a database for peopel who abuse government programs and every doctor should be notified of the abuser, like a bad credit reprot. America's medicaid system should implement the same and provide free vasectomies...no questions asked.

The millions of Americans without coverage are the ones who are not poor enough for medicaid, and increasing medicaid coverage could be possible if effrots were done to cut the waste fraud and abuse so that servcies can be provided to peopel who need them.

There are also other issues in the US like excessive lawsuits, punitive damages, lack of dcotors, and protectionism caused by the AMA. There are lots of other issues and I admit I am an Economist, not a doctor, so I won't have all the answers or even that many. I don't think Canada's system would work in the US, just because of the abuses that would occur.

<<Have you been following the Conservative party's travails up here? The PC's don't exist anymoe; they merged with the Canadian Alliance to form the Conservative party (not Progressive conservative, just Conservative) and are right now in the midst of a leadership race. Stephen Harper will probably take it. (sighs)>> I have been keeping up with waht is going on, thouh I think PCs still exist on a provincial level.

Damian Penny, a lawyer from CB, is my main source of information on Canadaian politics along with a few others. Belinda Stronach looked good on paper, but she seems to fall short of expectations. I think Harper is a poor choice, just because it looks like an Alliance takeover. Clement seems the best choice from my perspective, especially since he is from Ontario and the Conservatives do pretty well in the West (even the majority of Saskatchewan's MPs are Cosnervative while their premier is NDP), so the East is where they should focus on and appeal to.

I did hope the Tory name would stick as I have always lwanted to be one, just judging from their roots back in 17th century England as I vastly prefer the Cavaliers to Roundheads and occasionally post how much I despise Oliver Cromwell and wish the Mayflower sank.

<<I probably have a few undiscovered relatives in Louisiana. A few years ago I ran into a couple of people from Dallas who were in the Maritimes looking for family roots. "Really," I said. "What's your last name?" "Blacquiere," they said, and then I filled them in on what I knew. :-)>> Well my grandmother was a Villere and I think some of them are Canadian expats (which is funny as the Forsyths were Scottish Anglicans in Halifax and I have a picture of my great great great great grandfather getting ready for a fox hunt) and a number of others French emigrees to Louisiana and some were fleeing the insanity of the French Revolution as they were aristos in danger of following the Capetian monarchs to the guillotine. I personally consider Bastille Day a sad because of how many family I had that may have been murdered by mobs of deranged Jacoites.

<<That may be a valid correlation, but what exactly does that prove? Moreover, how would you fix that? Spending millions of dollars to "promote" marriage doesn't seem to me as much of a valid plan as giving subsidies or allowances to daycares so that single parents can have someone look after their kids while they go out to find meaningful work.>> Well, the real problem is that we ahve a sytem that encourages illegitmacy by rewarding irresponsible behavior. Letting each state solve their welfare problem was a good start as every state (and municiplaity) has its own problems and its own approaches.

Eductaion is one method. I'll even support having Planned Parenthood help, though I think personal responsibility needs to be emphasized. Reducing awards for having kids on welfare will have an imapct in reducing the birthrate. For those already born...social workers can stop wprrying about homeschoolers and focus on welfare moms. Many kids wind up in horroble situations that should never have occured, but the welfare is given indiscriminately and I see no reason at all for a bakery store to accept food stamps. The aid should be tied to direct nutritional, clothing, and shelter needs (I think there is a real problem when a baby on welfare has designer baby clothes).

Welfare is a Government grant and the government can tell people how to use money they are _given_. The purpose of welfare is to help families that fall on hard tiems to get back on their feet, not to trap them and their descendants in a cycle of dependency.

As for Anne Coulter, I was just ocmmenting on her appearance. I think the best conservative at a party is PJ O'Rourke, hands down. At this party, my liberal of choice is Christopher Hitchens, who recently spent a weekend violating various ordinances of Mayor Bloomberg.

Caboose> I got the DVDs recently and I have been enjoying the show. I do admit Treize and Lady Une are my favorites.

<<I don't know for sure, actually. I just know that most folks hate the stupid things.>> They are private health insurnace orgaizations, but I think they were the result of Government regulation and an answer provided by them. Managed health care can be a good thing, but they have their share of red tape and rising premiums, though there are other reaosn for it like the lack of doctors (we need abot 3x as many as we have now) in the US and malpractice suits.

Mara> <<to attempt suicide and survive has to be one of the most embarrassing situations one can find themself in.>> Or it can mark a new beginning in one's life and re-evaluation of priorities.

Thaors> I though you were Southern from your previosu commens about the Civil War. As for being a Music major I imagine there are many excellent music colleges in the South, among them Loyola University where I went, though I was an Economics/Finance major.

Also, Jazz, Blues, and Rock all have their roots in the American South. It's not just country and western :)

<<"Terrorism" has become an excuse to rob individual freedoms, and no one seems to realize it.>> I'll agree, though its nothing recent. Clinton tried to connect the Oklahoma City bombings to right-wing talk radio. Terorrism is one buzz word. Compassioan can be used to do the same thing....or "the children".

Hellcat> How I so love you, my beloved ::kisses:: I am glad you posted and hope to see you here often.

<<In a place other than my hometown, I wouldn’t go alone at all costs.>> I'd also be with you, so you wont be alone.

It has almost been two years since I first emailed you, and all over geneoalogy stuff :)

Lynati and Ravyn> Good point.

Lexy and Kaioto
Coyote and Ravyn
Doug and Kit....welll ;)

Of course some pairings weren't as successful, but overall they allow peopel to meet who woudln't have otherwise.

Then add Gargoyles related coupels like Whitless and Stormy ;) BTW, I miss a certain Amy Cyrway.

Gside> I like the characters more than the fight scenes. I also read that Lady Une was based on Anne of Green Gables...which souds really odd to me.

Dezi> <<Uh, no. You keep that horney little beastie in his cat carrier. Dottie-dog shall bite you now.>> He's also quite dead but his ghost haunts us still :)

As for Nader, he may be a plant by Cheney, though Mooore endorsed him too. Maybe he's a double agent, too :)

One liberal blogger i love to read Michael Totten has descirbed him as a paranoid far-left Democrat who desires to hurt his own party, and he supported Nader last time. I of course supportd Perot in 1992 though I soon learned he was crazy, but funny.

Firestorm> Eating people..now that is _A Modest Proposal_ to reducing welfare too ;)

Vinny> <<Because people only get one LIFE. Oh, wait! You probably believe in reincarnation. So you wouldn't understand.>> Morally you may be right. But legally I think it is a right...one of those unfortunate rights and one I think is a bad right to practice unless you're Yasser Arafat or Fidel Castro. They are free to kill themselves and it would be a good thing for those they "lead". Jesse jackson, Ted Rall, and Fred Phelps can also kill themselves and I'll shed no tears.

question> <<Only a bit??>> Well, I suspect some assumed gayness as there undoubtedly are slashfic pairings with Noin/Relena, Treize/Zechs, Heero/Duo, Quartre/Trowa, but I take it that's not what you mean.

Bud-Clare> "Common-sense gun control" is a buzzword, as are "family values" and well anything invoking values, so I see Gunjack's concern and yet I agree with you that there are thsoe who simply want basic controls that cause minimal redcutions of liberty, but certain buzords do evoke suspicion.

Mara:<Why? Suicide should be every man's priviledge. It's a selfish act, sure, but if one, theoretically speaking, has control and possession of one's own life and body, they should be able to terminate on their own terms. I just feel bad because he was an extremely attractive person.>Because people only get one LIFE. Oh, wait! You probably believe in reincarnation. So you wouldn't understand.

Dezi:<Anyone can go kill themselves, it's their choice. Some people should be encouraged.>I didn't say they couldn't I Said that I feel sorry for them. There's a difference, but if you can't see that then that's your problem not mine. I happen to find it tragic when someone can no longer see a reason to live. Yo.
First off, sorry about the percieved insensitivity of the Brandis suicide. I was in a bad mood that day. I did like him on Seaquest (I loved Seaquest in general. Except that last future-y bit- that was a little wierd). Darwin sad. But really, my comment was mostly on how, like, not even CNN did a little blurb about it. Dunno. Not like it would be if Michael Jackson suddenly swung from the ceiling, but still. Hell, I'd be more than a bit dissappointed if I was that famous at one point in my life, bit it, and no one mentioned it. Make you want to kill yourself all over again, if you were in that state of mind. Speaking of which, not to sound morbid, but, wonder what made him want to do it?...

Vinnie: Anyone can go kill themselves, it's their choice. Some people should be encouraged.

Gunjack:<You're ailing? > Not anymore. Kidney stones hurt like hell though. I recommend not getting one. Ever. It pretty much can incapacitate you, and it sucks when your boyfriend would rather go play pool than even call to check on you. :P

GB:Nader is stu-pid. We have this conspiracy theory at the newspaper, where we think that either the man is out of his gourd (on a substance, perhaps?) or that Cheney is paying him off. Of course, this is entirely unsubstantiated, but it is gonna make for a good political cartoon in the next issue. I'm thinking: Cheney (either as a creepy old dude, or a creepy old pimped out dude) holding a wad of bills and saying 'hey kid you want some of this? And Nader goes 'Okeee'. Or Cheney holding a tree hostage with an ax, forcing Nader to run. (I claim both of these ideas copyright me, so I better not see them pop up anywhere!) Dean and Nader need counseling. Big time.
<You'll find someone else...maybe someone in the CR. > Hey, who knows. A friend at school has gone all matchmaker on me, and has vowed to hook me up on a blind date. I feel like a bad TLC show.... Someone check on me in a couple of weeks, as a safety precaution. ;)

<Gundam Wing fans are in the CR,> I prefer Inuyasha, but one of my Chicago friends has been known to blow his paychecks on those dumb toys. That is why I quit buying the guy food.
<Reverend Attila > Uh, no. You keep that horney little beastie in his cat carrier. Dottie-dog shall bite you now.

Karen: Yo! 'Sup? Good to finally hear from you. (GB has been spreading...rumors... nah, just kidding). :)

Lain:<we still love you tho :) > Awww. Thanks. :D
<as for nader... hes bought and paid for just like everyone else in american politics.. and by lots of the SAME people, too :P> See? My point. 'Cept Cheney has bought him. I bet. Like a little marionette. 'Dance, Nader! Dance! Muwahahaha!'

Lynati:<Canada, which thrives on Cannibalism> I knew they were up to something! (Besides, what else do you do with a bunch of American criminals on the lam, or draft dodgers? Have them over for dinner!) Heh, the open border was too good to be true...

And lastly: read this at a greeting card at work (A Snoopy one!) What is Irish and sits in your back yard all nite?
*This is where I'm thinking Irish setter*
Paddy O'Furniture!
Only Snoopy could pull that off. We were trying to say it with an Irish accent at work, cause we all thought it was hilarious (one of _those_ days), but the closest we could get was a bad snooty British. Then this little old lady with a thick So. Indiana accent came up to us, and just growled it out, Irish style. It was so weird! How to tell when you've worked at a place long enough....

Hello, yeah I’m a newbie here. I do admit recently I lurked around reading Thomas’s posts since he loves babbling. As do I. I take it anyoen can guess who I am after I say this. I’m the Karen mentioned in green baron’s post. So, boo! I hav eno idea how much he talked about me but I guess you can lump it together as a 23 year old geeky Newfie who loves cats and has one on her lap whenever she’s at the computer. Haha.

Yeah I’m horrible at introducing myself

Whitbourne, Danny boy (my nickname for Newfoundland’s premier) actually dumped the deputy ministers and assiant ministers in the government recently to have pensions back to normal. He also was interviewed by Rick Mercer and it was published in Macleans. It was so funny but of course the media was not impressed. Danny boy just joked around with Mercer about Newfoundland’s parliament being a crowd of drunks. As thomas posted earlier, I love Rick Mercer. He’s funny guy and very good at bashing politics. I likke him and I’m not that political. Perhaps I’m a bit biases since he is a Newfie.

I have to saw the ‘Danny Millions’ nickname is a bit unheard of to me…Perhaps because I keep sayign Danny ‘Bye’ I find that nickname funny since I want to steal his Dodge Viper. One can dream…Muhaha

The gun talk I will not comment on. I’m a bit iffy on it. A few days ago on Newfoundland’s Avalon Pensiula, they had three armed robberies…go figure. Can’t they shoot a moose instead? More sound to do so since Newfoundland is very poor.

Green baron: I can’t believe how long ago I met you. Ravenloft sounds very far away to me.

“Now I can walk down Napoleon Avenue in New Orleans at night or Broadway or St. Charles Ave, so I may not share your fears, but I agree that your section fo London felt safe. If I could get a job in London and even if I got 3 million after taxes, I'd live in your neighborhood as its safe and cheap, though I'd get an apartment that was more handicapped accessible for Karen.”
Oh my. Aren’t I a small town girl. If I wanted to, I can actually walk at night with no cares because everyone knows my name. In a place other than my hometown, I wouldn’t go alone at all costs.

I heard froma friend of mine that London is really hilly but naturally quiet.

I love Tim Hortons but they’re going hell for this reason….they don’t make my favourite doughnut anymore! I am protesting for the survival of Blueberry Fritters!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Tim Horton’s spread about USA. Isn’t there about 20 Tim Horton’s in the USA now?

I like Gundam Wing. My favourite character is Treize. Gotta love him!

And to be in good graces and to assure you all, Gargoyles is something I like too. I liked how the modern world blended with magic and whatnot. I watched that show a lot but then it was kicked off air before I could see more. I reckon I saw more than half of the episodes.

Phew. How’s that for a first post? :)

Hm? I'm all for gun rights, but that doesn't make me southern! ;) This is the only topic I'm all that conservative on. I'm going to college for MUSIC, for chrissakes, I can't be that much of a hick. Anyway, I think I'm hopping back out of this argument, after I say this:

Lain<<in their original function, and when they stick to talking about guns, they are right. when they start blabbing on about "terrorism" and "threats to national security" well... the can stick it up their nose :P>>
Rock on... my thoughts exactly. "Terrorism" has become an excuse to rob individual freedoms, and no one seems to realize it.

Dezi:<Tells when you're kinda washed up, that you kill yourself and no one notices.>
Vinnie: "I kind of feel sorry for people who waste their lives on sucide. Life is to precious to waste like that!" Why? Suicide should be every man's priviledge. It's a selfish act, sure, but if one, theoretically speaking, has control and possession of one's own life and body, they should be able to terminate on their own terms. I just feel bad because he was an extremely attractive person.

Question:"Out of morbib curiosity how exactly did he attempt to end his life?"
From what I could gleen from the articles I've read (they do often try to be vague) he had hanged himself, some friends found him and got him to a hospital.

Bud-Clare "Ick. I hope it didn't take too long" Me either, though I am glad he did die-- to attempt suicide and survive has to be one of the most embarrassing situations one can find themself in.

<Confused> But isn't the Canadian system having more than a few problems of its own right now?

HMO's strike me as a symptom of privatized health care. Aren't they private companies?

<Shrugs> I don't know for sure, actually. I just know that most folks hate the stupid things.

though austin 2 wasn't that great

sometimes when reading the tgs I get the feeling like its different stories.... then i realize it is different authors for the most part but sometimes the minor storielines are lost from person to person, it rarely appears but in a few of the recent stories i've read ("call to arms" - "reunions") one of the minor subplots from earlier in the tgs has been nigging at the back of my mind but it doesn't come to mind at the moment.

Oy; lots to get through. Good thing I'm on spring break. Two comments, very quickly - first of all, add one more couple to the list. Me and Stormy officially courted in the Station Eight chat room and it'll be seven years this may. Second of all...what the heck is "Runaway Jury?" I know it's a movie, but I have no idea what it's about other than that it has John Cusack and Gene Hackman in it.

Now...)
Gunjack> <Have you ever held or fired a gun?> I have. My Dad used to take me shooting as a kid with his rifle. Very safe, always under adult supervision. I've also fired weapons through the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and got a crossed-rifles badge for marksmanship. I didn't have fun, though - it was a requirement for the course I was taking, and that was it. And as for being uncomfortable around people who like guns, well, what can I say? It's not as though I shun them or stop being friends with them, it's just that when they start talking about guns, that's when it's usually time to duck to the washroom. The same as the NRA and the Canadian group. I think with them, though, it's the idea that they're so focused on this, which to me is an issue of second or third-tier importance, considering the more serious problems our respective societies face.
Reasonable gun control: I don't see any need for anything other than liscensing, registration, mandatory completion of an accredited gun safetry course, criminal background check and waiting period for the purchase and ownership of a firearm, with a possible role for mandatory re-testing of safety skills every three years or so and notification of change of ownership when you sell it so that if need be, it can be contact traced. The visceral part of me marvels at why any private citizen would need an automatic or semi-automatic weapon for any reason whatsoever other than bragging rights, but banning ownership of those is not something I've thought about. I would be inclined, however, to suggest that anyone outside of the military should have more stringent restrictions when purchasing these weapons. What the heck does anyone need them for?
My opinion of the role of guns in society is that they're more suited to rural areas. My father-in-law has guns that he has, on occasion, used to protect livestock from animal predators. That's fine. It's guns in cities that I start to see less of a need for private citizens to have them. Any protection they give seems to be mostly psychological, and I'd be interested to see some stats on how much safer carrying a gun actually makes you in the commission of a crime. For every serious criminal (that threatens your life, not just your wallet) that's scared off by a gun, another one will be just as likely to take it from you, or have one of their own. For every gun you have in your home, thats a chance that someone could get to it first and use it against you. As well, since violent crime is dropping in society, the chances of having to use it is less and less. This ties right into "Bowling", but to me, guns in cities are more about feeling protected or powerful than in actually being so. Whether that's worth it is, to me at least, debatable.

Lain> Would you point out an accurate source for the homicide rates? What statements did he falsify? I'll admit I don't know much about the NRA-KKK connection. As for the juxtapositions; he never said they caused it. I think he mentioned that he thought it was interesting that Lockheed-Martin is the biggest employer in Littleton. Certainly someone could say that the two wee linked in the film, but correlation doesn't imply causation, and I did not get the impression that he was saying one caused the other.
I'm not afraid of guns; I just don't like them. It's the same as power tools; I'm not afraid of a bandsaw, but I have no interest in operating one. I don't have any probelm with people using them safe and respectfully. I just have no interest in them and really fail to see why controlling a tool that has the capacity to be dangerous is such a point of contention. Those that use guns safely should be interested in reasonable controls to ensure that. As for what those controls are, see above. Fear of confiscation based on licenses may be real, but a license itself does not mean confiscation. You could argue the same thing about dogs; if you license your dog does that mean the government will come and take it away?
Re: guns and health-care. No reason we can't do both. But like I said, the emphasis on protecting gun rights is grossly misplaced when there are how many million Americans wihout access to affordable care? Nobody's saying we can't do both, but each should get the attention it deserves. Gun rights are a second or third-tier priority, at best, compared to health care.
I am completely aware that gun control doesn't mean reduction in gun violence. I'm looking at it in terms of safetry; making sure that people who own guns use them safely. making sure that people who shouldn't have guns cant purchase them legally. This has to be coupled with other initiatives; tougher sentences if you commit a crime using a firearm, cracking down on the root causes of crime - which, more often than not, are the same as the root causes of poverty - and cracking down on international sales of arms.
As for the NRA being a proponent of responsibility and safety, well, they aren't doing a good job of being visible. If they would promote a coherent gun control plan and focus lobbying on points similar to those I've proposed, then I'll believe they're interested. Until then, I kind of just see them as talking the talk.
Green Baron> It is a small world. One of the people in my med school class turned out to be a cousin of my cousin that I knew when I was a kid but haven't seen since. :-)
Yes, I am an NDP guy; officially joined the party this year, actually, which surprised me because I'm usually non-partisan (though always shading to the left). Have you been following the Conservative party's travails up here? The PC's don't exist anymoe; they merged with the Canadian Alliance to form the Conservative party (not Progressive conservative, just Conservative) and are right now in the midst of a leadership race. Stephen Harper will probably take it. (sighs)
Made In Canada was a show produced by and starring Rick Mercer that satirized television production. I think it showed in the States for a while under the title of "The Industry". I thought it was hilarious.
Happy Mardi Gras, by the way! I probably have a few undiscovered relatives in Louisiana. A few years ago I ran into a couple of people from Dallas who were in the Maritimes looking for family roots. "Really," I said. "What's your last name?" "Blacquiere," they said, and then I filled them in on what I knew. :-)
Illegitimacy and welfare> That may be a valid correlation, but what exactly does that prove? Moreover, how would you fix that? Spending millions of dollars to "promote" marriage doesn't seem to me as much of a valid plan as giving subsidies or allowances to daycares so that single parents can have someone look after their kids while they go out to find meaningful work. Your full benefits idea has merit, too, from what I see. Newfoundland - I'm not sure what they're doing now. They have a new premier, Danny Williams (known semi-afficionately as Danny Millions) who hasn't really put plans in action yet, so we'll have to see.
Discomfort around gun enthusiasts: i should have phrased that better. I don't dislike them, I just conveniently have to go somewhere else when they talk about guns. I'm sure some of my friends do the same to me when I natter on about my hobbies and enjoyments. :-)
We disagree on health care as a right, I guess, but to me, it's an extension of protecting yourself. Not every procedure should be provided (Botox for wrinkles? Let me see your credit card) but I think that no one should have to go without life-saving or beneficial treament simply because they're worried about how they're going to be able to afford it.
I didn't like any of Charlton Heston's movies. I HATED Planet of the Apes. :-P I'll sympathzie with him over the Alzheimer's Disease - my grandfather had it and it's not a fate I'd wish on anyone - but if that's the case, then why is he still spokesman?
Re: Anne Coulter - Ugh. I'm sorry, but at least Michael Moore looks like he'd behave himself at a party. Anne coluter brings a mental image of throwing down a wine gass and shrieking about how the Democrats have poisoned her food. :-)

Well, its TGS Cross Fire, with your hosts Whitbourne of Halifax West vs Gunjack Valentine who resides in Texas with all them steers and queers. Joining is Tharos is from somewhere down south and Lain of the London North Riding.

Or better yet...we'll make this McLoughlin Group..I'm John McLoghlin and all you're all wrong!!! j/k

Whitbourne> << I'll be here at least another three and a half yars. Halifax is a pretty booming city now, especially the music and culture scene. I think a relatively recent survey called it one of the fastest growing cities in Canada.>> Well that is interesting to know. I hope New Orleans one day becomes the fastest growing city in America as opposed to one of the fastest shrinking cities.

Karen says Anne Marie Wiseman sounds familiar. Her mother's family is from Glace Bay in Cape Breton (45 minute drive from Sydney). Her mother's maiden name is MacInnis and her cousi Jessica MacInnis is a second year undergrad at your College. It's a small world, ain't it.

<<Alexa did sort of come across as a stick-in-the-mud, but I'll forgive her for that; she really impressed me a few months ago when she came to a speech and listened to a physician from Doctors Without Borders explain how we could get affordable generic medicine to Africa. She seemed really interested and receptive, so I'll forgive a little bit of good old-fashioned Canadian Presbyterian humourlessness on her part.>> Well, I am a conservative and I like the idea of Doctor's Without Borders and sending affodable generic care to Africa as well as other third world nations like Haiti and Louisiana.

I take it you're more an NDP guy then. Hopefully you won't mind that if I were Canadian, I'd probably be a Tory, though Libertarian is teh best designation of my views.

<<and I prefer humour that's more subtle, like "22 Minutes" or "Made in Canada". Conan O'Brian is capable of funnier than that. It just seemed cheap.>> Karen adores Rick Mercer, but I've never heard of Made in Canada.

<<As for the French-bashing, that doesn't bother me. It's no worse than what we say about "les maudits Anglais" behind your back. (j/k)>> I may be an Anglophone, but I would never consider myself an Anglo. My father's family is a Scottish/French hybrid, while my mother's s mostly Irish with a quarter of German. Both sides are part limey, but they are also both descended of William the Conqueror so hopefully that English is Norman noble and not Saxon peasant. I also hail from New Orleans which is to the US what Montreal is to Quebec and we got a lot of Nova Scotia's Acadians down in the Bayou. Great food and great folks. BTW, today is Mardi Gras so eat hardy for tommorrow you diet :)

Now I am not as big a gun enthusiast as Gunjack or even Lain, but I am in the Army and I carried an M16 with me almost everyday in Kosovo. I know how to clean one and I can fire it and qualify as a marksman. We also don't call them guns, but weapons, which is what they are. They are dangerous and are used to kill people, animals, hippies, or shoot up paper and plastic targets.

I won't question your Canadian patriotism, and if you are a liberal city dweller, well that's your choice :)

I do admit that in the rural areas, guns are not a problem, as they are not a problem in Wyoming, Montana, or the Dakotas. Washington DC has a very high murder rate and an almost total handgun ban...so that isn't working too well.

<<Work-for-welfare: I agree with you that it's wrong. Ontario proved that quite nicely (Mike Harris, as usual). Welfare fraud is a problem, but I don't think it's as huge a problem as we make it out to be. More money gets wasted through corporate fraud, I'm sure, and a lot of the workfare programs seem motivated by petty revenge and a punish-the-lazy mindset than any sort of redemptive motive. What's the solution? I don't know, other than to say that working to eliminate the root causes of poverty would work better than a band-aid solution like welfare to begin with. That should be our primary focus.>> Well, the root cause is illegitimacy. A poor single woman has a much better chance of getting off welfare than a poor single mom with three bastards.

I don't know Canada's methods excet for Newfondland's, which upset me that Karen's dad was payng 2/3 income tax so seasonal workes could milk EI, and Roger Grimes said welfare fraud is good for Newfoundland's economy. With high taxes and overly generous welfare, the province will be kept behind (well the crappy oil deals and foreign fishermen are hurting Newfoundland too).

Now for welfare to work in the US, I think it is a good thing. It needs improvement, but the redistribution programs of the past have promoted illegitamcy and large families, creating a vicious cycle of dependency.

I would be perfectly okay with letting a mother just off welfare and working keep full benefits for two years to help her get off her feet.

I also advocate gutting corporate welfare, tarriffs, and all agricultural subsidies, and I support same sex marriage 100%, so I do agree with you on a few things ;)

<<I tend to be uncomfortable around people that like guns.>> Why be like that? That's their preferences. After College the word social justice makes me cringe a bit, but I had soem good friends and a girl I liked (but was afraid to say anything to about it) who were activists and did stuff liek border witness and protesting the School of the Americas. We had very different positions, but we still greeted each other with a hug. I also knwo I'm wrong to ciringe at what is a good thing basically, as I support measures like micro-lending which has doen a great job in Bangladesh, plus one could still get a good return on the interest.

I hope you meet someone you disagree with 96% of the time who turns out to be one of your most valued friends.

<<It bothers me that people think access to a gun is a more important right than access to efficient, affordable health care, and it bothers me most of all when my thinking these things gets me labelled as an unpatriotic quote-unquote "liberal city-dweller" who "just doesn't understand" the role of guns in society.>> I agree its unfair to be labeled as that. I am certain some on the right woudl label me a flaming liberal for supporting same sex marriage and public transportation,a nd by soem standards I may be a liberal. Now I consider the ability to protct yourself a fundamental right. I don't view healthcare as a right. A good thing definitely, but not a right.

As for Charleton Heston, the guy has Alzheimer's (though George Clooney was a complete asshole for saying he deserved it since he was President of the NRA), so he's not as sharo as he used to be, but he still looks to be in good shape and while his earleir movies were so so, I though he was great in The Omega Man and Soylent Green, as well as Planet of the Apes, but the first two are not as well known, but they are great.

Lain> <<i COMPLETELY agree. i DO actually feel a difference between walking down the street here (we live in a "good" neighbourhood) vs walking down the street where i USED to live in ontario (which was in the worst part of town. strangely enough, i was NEVER afraid to walk home from work at 11pm at my old place - but here, i dont want to walk the dog around the block in the afternoon by myself. why is that?>> Now I can walk down Napoleon Avenue in New Orleans at night or Broadway or St. Charles Ave, so I may not share your fears, but I agree that your section fo London felt safe. If I could get a job in London and even if I got 3 million after taxes, I'd live in your neighborhood as its safe and cheap, though I'd get an apartment that was more handicapped accessible for Karen.

I imagine you might not feel as safe in certain parts of Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver at night either. I hope to visit you next January and I'll judge your neighborhood. It could be a feeling more for you that may not affect me at all.

<<yeah, we should have a tally or something... the number of couples who have met in this CR is approaching stupid :P>> Well, I met karen through a Ravenloft site, but that was similar :) Let's see:

Mara and Aaron
Heather and Robby
You and Gunjack
Spacebabie and Revel

Firestorm and Lady Mystic were already together, pre-TGS CR

Not that many actually. Well I can think of a few for Dezi..Greg X, DPH, Gside, Leo, Patrick, Reverend Attila :)

<<yes, which means that he, like rush, will tell you exactly one half of the truth ;)>> Yeah. I've ehard Moore compared to Anne Coulter..except I want to see Ann Coulter topless, but Michael Moore ::shudders::

<<now now, i think tim hortons has started baking their donuts instead of frying them - therefore they are less fattening ;)>> OK. Twenty Time Horton's :)

If I were US Ambassador to Canada, I'd suggest that the US have a contract with Tim Horton's for the military food courts. Definitely healthier than Taco Bell, Popeyes, and Burger King.

Speaking of gun organziations, there is one called pink pistols which I think I showed you a link for.

<<yes, but as they say, the affordable health care can only help you ACTER youve been shot by the burgular ;)>> And in generally guns won't have too big an effet on health care costs unless you start shooting all the malpractice lawyers....actually they shouldmake a hunting season on personal injury lawyers :)

<<misrepresentation of the NRA as an offshoot of the KKK>> The irony is that the KKK backed one of Michigan's first gun controll laws in repsonse anupstanding hard-working black doctor in Detroit defending his family against against a bunch of white trash who were all upset about him living in their neighborhood. I've always considered honest hard-working inner-city minorities hardest hit by gun control, myself.

<<such as US bombing of kosovo setting off columbine shootings>> and then Fat Bastard endorses Wesley Clark. I guess now he can endorse John Kerry (whose face probably has enough botox to declare him a WMD).

Andrea> Go ahead and talk about your cats. I love them and so does Karen. I don't plan on ever having kids, so I'll have a few cats who are cuter and less troublesome anyway :)

Now, Im off for a while. How many Gundam Wing fans are in the CR, btw?

Blah. Have a Psychology exam tommrrow...blech. I need to study, but Info isn't staying in my head...I often wonder if I have ADD or something, since for a few years now, I haven't been able to concentrate as well as I used to (I used to be a straight A student, and one of the top 5 smartest people in my grade...needless to say, I'm not that way anymore!) But that's an entirely different rant.

I hate to talk more about my cats, but this story can't remain untold.

The other night, Lola was being a pain and scratching furniture, even after I fed her. So, I gave her the catnip sock to keep her busy. Cleo tried to take it, so I gave her the smaller burlap catnip sack. But No. She had to have Lola's. I caught her stealing it...TWICE (and I'm shocked Lola even let her have it, she's pissy at times, ESPECIALLY if you come near her when she's got catnip). I went into the kitchen once, and when I came back, the sock and Cleo were gone..and Lola was playing with the Burlap one...which was left by Cleo completely on the other sode of the room from where the sock was.

To get even with Cleo, I took the sock, and put it "away" with all her other toys (which is on the ottoman in the corner of the room). But she kept going after it! I hid it underneath like 4 things, and yet she STILL went after it! I had to eventually hide in the closet.

To calm her down a bit, I played with her with the little feather duster cat toy. I was in the middle of the room with it, and she still managed to walk into the TV and a chair trying to get it...she was on drunken cat (and a little theif) that night!

And my mom claims Catnip doesn't effect kittens...

And I found FIVE of her toy mice underneath kitchen appliances...when I got the last one out, 2 were already back under the stove and fridge.

And she now tries to bury her dish (and Lola's) if she doesn't like the smell of it...My mom yelled at her one time, and Cleo gave her the look of death and gave this pissy meow (Cleo's a very quiet kitten, unlick Lola...they're like Frick and Frack).

I know, I talk about my cats WAY too much...but I love them...I'm a big cat lover. That, and I'm the kind of person who tells tales liek this a LOT. I blame it on my mom. That's where I get it from. We're a very talkative family (though My dad and sis are the quiet ones).

<<particularly with the cartoon in the middle>> lots of fibs in there, large and small. ill get to a big one later.
<<Welfare fraud is a problem, but I don't think it's as huge a problem as we make it out to be>> no, i dont think it is either. its just a "scapegoat" if you will.
<<That should be our primary focus>> yes, i agree completely.
<<I don;t know why that is, but I feel the film addressed it more than you give it credit for>> i think it should have actually focused on the issues it raised, rather than descending into cheap stunts. i also think it should have gone deeper into the issue and addressed stuff like the "profit motive" that news companies have as a reason for why news becomes sensationalized.
<<Just out of curiousity - what "lies and misrepresentations" got to you?>> oh dear, do you have a lot of time? ;)
ill give a few.
1) (i think its safe to say *intentionally*) falsified statistics for gun homicides in various countries.
2) falsification of statements made by charleton heston.
3) misrepresentation of the NRA as an offshoot of the KKK
4) making *multiple* completely rediculous correlations between events (such as US bombing of kosovo setting off columbine shootings, lockheed martin building missiles setting off shootings etc. now, i do believe there IS a correlation there, i just dont think its the one he was trying to make).

<<This is going to betray me as the stereotypical Canadian I am, but...I don't like guns>> yeah and you know what? me too. i really *REALLY* used to hate guns. i agreed to go to a gun show with gj because i knew he really wanted to go, and i love him, so i went. i was petrified the entire time, and refused to touch anything. of course, i realize that being afraid of an inanimate object is rather irrational but... whatever :P
since then, i have been to two other shows, and have progressively calmed down. i still dont like to touch them. there is one gun that i dont mind now, and that is the one that gj bought for me for christmas. even after that, i refused to touch it. i went and watched him shoot it and only a lot later actually shot it myself. the reason i dont mind it is because i know that its safe. i clean it, and maintain it. every time i touch it, or see it, i check to make sure it is not loaded (even when i know for a fact that there is no ammunition even in the house). i know how to strip it down into its component parts and render it completely useless.
now, i dont like guns (or any other weapon, for that matter) very much in the abstract (specifically, i abhore certain types of bullets... have you ever seen those little geletin test-shoots they do? yikes.) but through all the research and actual experience i have since aquired, i now understand that, properly used and respected (as the dangerous things they are) they have their place and are not so bad.
the problem people have with guns is not really a problem they SHOULD have. a gun is just a thing. the problem is that people dont respect the fact that guns are dangerous and need to be cared for properly - and also that we live in a society where people feel the need to use ANY sort of weapon against someone else.
<<I find the idea that people would be against reasonable gun control to be abhorrent>> define "reasonable"? license? confiscation? outright ban? now yes, i DO agree with "reasonable" gun control - but the problem the NRA has with the term "reasonable" is that every place it has been implimented, what follows is confiscation and banning. they are against government licenses because history states that once governments know where the guns are, its very easy for them to come and take them (like, say, in britain and australia).
<<It bothers me that people think access to a gun is a more important right than access to efficient, affordable health care>> yes, but as they say, the affordable health care can only help you ACTER youve been shot by the burgular ;)
seriously tho, you do have a point. health care should be a priority, but i dont see why its necessary to focus on one and forget about the other when most peoples brains are capable of multitasking..
<<gets me labelled as an unpatriotic quote-unquote "liberal city-dweller" who "just doesn't understand" the role of guns in society>> well, most people who dont like guns really DONT understand. most people who dont like guns think that gun control reduces gun violence, which is pretty much entirely false.
http://www.sfu.ca/mediapr/sfnews/2001/Nov15/mauser.html
the actual paper:
http://oldfraser.lexi.net/publications/critical_issues/1995/gun/
<<He's like a one-man equivalent of the tobacco lobbies>> youve been watching "runaway jury" havent you..?
<<the visible face of an industry that had a vested interest in lax laws and public ignorance in order to sell a product that most of us don't need>> actually no, this is not true. it is in the gun industries best interest to promote SAFETY. why? because then people cant give their product a bad name. the gun industry is *the* most heavily regulated industry in america - and the NRA is doing absolutely nothing about it. why? because they think regulations on gun production and safety are *good things* too.
really, the problem is that they dont want to get sued when someone uses one of their weapons (which has been sold legally amd stolen - and then used) to commit a crime. why not? because thats not fair. just like me running you over with a car and you suing the car manufacturer isnt fair.
the tobacco lobbies and gun lobbies are two *extreeeeemely* different things. when used properly, cigarettes ARE addictive and WILL kill you. also, the gun manufacturers (even as a group) are inky dinky when compared to even one tobacco company. comparing the two like that is an incorrect portrayal of the industry.
<<Heston is the sort of person that gives responsible gun owners a bad name>> how so? i dont understand, maybe youre referencing something i havent heard.

tharos>> <<CH could've stayed and argued, and even I knew he could've made a few valid points, but he left>> yes, ill admit that his leaving the discussion DID make him look very bad. however, im sure he was acutely aware of the fact that, even if he HAD made valid points, he was not the man with the power of editing over the film. you think moore would have left in the points, even if he had made them?
<<To me it proves he's nothing but a pretty face to front the NRA>> you call that face "pretty?" man, you are twisted... ;)

i dislike the NRA because they have become mouthpieces for conservative propaganda... and i HATE conservative propagada :P
in their original function, and when they stick to talking about guns, they are right. when they start blabbing on about "terrorism" and "threats to national security" well... the can stick it up their nose :P

Whitbourne><<I don't like guns.>>
Out of curiousity...
Have you ever held or fired a gun?
<<I tend to be uncomfortable around people that like guns.>>
Boo.
<<I find the idea that people would be against reasonable gun control to be abhorrent..>>
In every instance, "Reasonable Gun Control may be diorectly translated "Ban and Confiscation". It worked that way in Britian, it worked that way in Australia, and to a man, the people who talk about "common sense gun control" admit that's what they want here.

Lain already asked it, but I will too... What do you think constitutes "common sense gun control"?

<<...and groups like the NRA and its kid-cousin Canadian equivalent irritate me.>>
Why? Assuming we're not pushing guns ahead of health care, what is it that we say that offends you?
<<and it bothers me most of all when my thinking these things gets me labelled as an unpatriotic quote-unquote "liberal city-dweller" who "just doesn't understand" the role of guns in society.>>
Having tasted the title and found it unpleasent, I will refrain from calling you a liberal or making any assumptions about your location... But what is, in your opinion, the role of guns in society?

<<This isn't so much of a problem up here, but Charlton Heston, down there - well, in one doddering old straw-man, he represents everything that makes me uncomfortable about guns. He's like a one-man equivalent of the tobacco lobbies - the visible face of an industry that had a vested interest in lax laws and public ignorance in order to sell a product that most of us don't need. To me, Heston is the sort of person that gives responsible gun owners a bad name by dint of association.>>
You've been watching "Runaway Jury", haven't you? ...Do you actually know anything about Charlton Heston, or what's been happening here in the states, gun-wise, over the past five years or so?

<<it did at least have SOME philosophical value, even if it needs a litte sticker that says "WARNING, DEPICTIONS AND STATISTICS MENTIONED IN THIS FEATURE MAY NOT BE FACTUALLY CORRECT!!!" >>
Damn, I didn't want to get involved in any more convos like this... but when I met my favorite band not too long ago, they were watching "Bowling for Columbine."
This basically sums up my thoughts on the whole thing. It made good points about fear, but the statistics were very one-sided in a number of places. And even though I'm a gun owner, I loved when he dominated Heston. CH could've stayed and argued, and even I knew he could've made a few valid points, but he left. To me it proves he's nothing but a pretty face to front the NRA, and doesn't know much about the politics behind it.
Still, as an American who's not racist, or pumped full of media-induced fear, or bloodthirsty, or really even patriotic, I felt like he made too many generalizations against the American public. We're not THAT bad. But I guess he needed something to sell a movie with. *shrug*

Lynati> Canada thriving on cannibalism? I wasn't aware of that, though that would explain why everything up here tastes so familiar. :-)

Lain> I think he touched on it fairly well, particularly with the cartoon in the middle. The film did seem disjointed, though, I'll grant you that - though I gotta confess, I like the stunts. He gets away with the stuff I wish I could do.
Work-for-welfare: I agree with you that it's wrong. That should be our primary focus.
I thought Michael Moore DID touch on the fear aspect, and touched on it quite well. I don't know, but when Is aw the movie, I didn't feel like he was blaming guns at all. My impression was very much that the differences were based on fear, not hardware. Heh. I don;t know why that is, but I feel the film addressed it more than you give it credit for.
Just out of curiousity - what "lies and misrepresentations" got to you?

<<I liked that movie just for its central thesis; the problem with the United States is that it's very much a country that thrives on sensationalism and fear>>

As opposed to Canada, which thrives on Cannibalism? ; )

Lain, you remember that restuarant you took me to, right? The ones with the different-colored umbrellas to distinguish between the dishes that were actually pork, and the ones made using the American tourists?

Attention all TGS artists:

Since I have had NO time whatsoever to do a new entry for the MGC: Fanfic Illustration contest this month, I asked Kess if she would accept previously done illustrations. She said that while she would prefer new artwork, she *would* accept pre-existing illustrations because of the low number of entries in MGC this month. This opens the contest up to lots and lots of TGS illustrations!

Remember to include the author name, story title and a link to the story in your picture description! Without these things, your entry will not be accepted.

See you at MGC!!

whitbourne>> <<I liked that movie just for its central thesis; the problem with the United States is that it's very much a country that thrives on sensationalism and fear>> i enjoyed that point very much - however i think it would be rather a stretch to call that his "central thesis". i was extremely disappointed with the number of times he touched on this *really* good point... and then totally destroyed it in favour of stupid publicity stunts like "lets go return all these bullets to k-mart (hyuk hyuk!) and completely miss the point that im trying to make (hyuk!)"
the other point that he missed was how utterly WRONG "work for welfare" programs are and how much damage they are doing to society as a whole. yes, welfare fraud is bad but this is NOT the way to combat it :P
<<appeasl to fear, protectionism, patriotism and sensationalism>> i COMPLETELY agree. i DO actually feel a difference between walking down the street here (we live in a "good" neighbourhood) vs walking down the street where i USED to live in ontario (which was in the worst part of town. strangely enough, i was NEVER afraid to walk home from work at 11pm at my old place - but here, i dont want to walk the dog around the block in the afternoon by myself. why is that? i have no idea, i probably have no reason to feel that way - but there IS a difference and i DO feel it. i dont think i would have had a chance of appreciating why lots of americans feel it necessary to "have the means of defending themselves" when i was living in canada, because it really is different.
unfortunately, what moore seems to miss is that THIS is the problem with american society, NOT the fact that they have guns. as he says, canadians have JUST as many guns, so that CANT be the problem.
<<Whether you liked the movie or not, it's an interesting position that deserves some serious and personal examination>> yes. i just wish hed emphasized THAT instead of appealing to the emotion and trying to blame the problem on guns, which is a cheap-shot and extremely superficial to the "real issue" going on.
also, another thing that might be worth some examination is why he found it necessary to use blatant lies and misrepresentations in order to get his (otherwise completely valuable) point across..
<<Plus anyone that makes fun of that decrepit, fossilizzed madman Charlton Heston gets a few points in my book>> i dont think heston particularly said anything worthy of scoffage in the movie... does being a gun-supporter, willing to "defend himself" with guns in his home make him any more worthy of laughter than all the other anti-gun hollywood stars who waltz around with armed bodyguards? o.O really, what's the difference? (other than the latter being sorta two-faced..)
<<Good lord, am I first?>> yes :) pretty freaky when you come into a completely empty room, no?

green baron>> <<You'll find someone else...maybe someone in the CR>> yeah, we should have a tally or something... the number of couples who have met in this CR is approaching stupid :P
<<I see him pretty much as a left-wing Rush Limbaugh>> yes, which means that he, like rush, will tell you exactly one half of the truth ;)
<<Michael Moore probably eat the whole inventory of at least 10 Tim Horton's while he was in Canada for the filming>> now now, i think tim hortons has started baking their donuts instead of frying them - therefore they are less fattening ;)
<<So it's even worse than the creation of Jar Jar Binks? That's pretty harsh>> ok well, maybe not THAT bad. it did at least have SOME philosophical value, even if it needs a litte sticker that says "WARNING, DEPICTIONS AND STATISTICS MENTIONED IN THIS FEATURE MAY NOT BE FACTUALLY CORRECT!!!"
(you know, like "Runaway Jury" needs ;))

dezi>> <<Tells when you're kinda washed up, that you kill yourself and no one notices>>
well, more people noticed his suicide than the vast majority of OTHER suicides that happen, i guess. not that it really makes it any better... :s
<<Yeah, the jerk decides that his pool-playing friends are more important than an ailing girlfriend, and that I am a nusciance>> well, THAT stinks, im sorry :(
we still love you tho :)
as for nader... hes bought and paid for just like everyone else in american politics.. and by lots of the SAME people, too :P

gside>> <<The firearm lingere helps keep it steady while you shoot>> definately.

gunjack>> <<And my first job ended this morning, which means no more 18-hour workdays. Mmmmm, sleep...>> yeah, or spending 6 hours playing computer games... *beats*

caboose>> <<WTF? If you hate this show and think we're a bunch of losers, what the Devil are you doing here?>>
just ignore the idiots and everything will get better ;)

krista>> <<<I just love talking about cats> you and me both: I've got 5>> me too :D i loves my kitties, and pooch. :)
