Fire Storm> <<I dunno what a VAX is anyway>>: Let's check my favorite tech resource, the Jargon File. VAX: /vaks/ n. 1. [from Virtual Address eXtension] The most successful minicomputer design in industry history, possibly excepting its immediate ancestor, the PDP-11. Between its release in 1978 and its eclipse by killer micros after about 1986, the VAX was probably the hacker's favorite machine of them all, esp. after the 1982 release of 4.2 BSD Unix (see BSD). Esp. noted for its large, assembler-programmer-friendly instruction set -- an asset that became a liability after the RISC revolution. 2. A major brand of vacuum cleaner in Britain. Cited here because its sales pitch, "Nothing sucks like a VAX!" became a sort of battle-cry of RISC partisans. It is even sometimes claimed that DEC actually entered a cross-licensing deal with the vacuum-Vax people that allowed them to market VAX computers in the U.K. in return for not challenging the vacuum cleaner trademark in the U.S.
<<Like it rough, eh?>>: I'll take it however I can get it.
<<If I ever did do that, I would follow the "you need to wear stockings with a skirt" part of the code too>>: There are the traditional kilt socks.
<<200% hourly compounded?>>: Whatever it'll take to serve everyone a pound of beef wellington each.
<<I am not really sure he HAS a credit card>>: So get him one and copy the number first.

Vinnie> <<As I just said above Exclamation Marks are a sign of a creative mind!>>: Exclamation marks are for emphasis, and are therefore a sign of excitability. Many of the greatest ideas of the past have been rather calm, more "oh, right, so that's how that works," than the traditional "eureka!"

Vinnie> <<I for one don't believe that I made an error in describing the TV show "24">>: The logical error was that you said it was "supposed to be [bad]," when the creators wanted to make something good. Something is what it is, something is supposed to be what the creator intends it to be. And that leads us into a great debate about art based on which is more important.

Fire Storm> I thought of a new variation: "!!!!!!!11111bang11111!!!!!!one!!!!11111." Bang being another way of saying exclamation mark (similar to crunch, dirk, grapes, pop, glob, and the like).
<<After all these months, why oh WHY is "Badger, Mushroom, Snake" still going through my head?>>: Because it's an ear worm. I reccommend Lions and Tigers in Kenya as a counter agent. I have never seen a giraffe's leg being gnawed on so cutely.

Na zdorov'ya.

Vinnie: Why is it that whenever someone calls you out on something, you circle the wagons around your opinions, whether or not the discussion had anything to do with opinions? (and, no, mistakes and typos or whatever neither count as creativity or an opinion). Are you terribly insecure about your opinions?
<distasteful, inept excuse for a TV show.> And, despite the fact that you drool your loathing, I'm sure there are worse shows. (and, just for the record, I watched the show _once_ and that was during season one.)
<Ah! But they're a sign of a creative mind.;) > No, it's more like a sign that you don't know how to quit hitting the same key (or, to be _specific_ a key-combo). &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Check it out, I'm so damn creative!

You mean Kill Bill vol. 2? I saw it last night.

*****Not really spoilers, just things I noticed. :p*****
- More plot and backstory than vol. 1.

- much homage to Sergio Leone's "spaghetti westerns" (This includes use of Ennio Morricone's music from "The good, the Bad, and the Ugly" , "For a Few Dollars More", and others..)

- lots of evidence of Tarrantino's foot fetish. :p

DPH: We're going to produce generations of kids who don't understand the beauty of the great outdoors or the joy of canoeing down a river.

Could very well be, but living out here in Idaho is a bit different. Most people do at least try to get their kids out into the wilderness, even if they never leave the comforts of their RV's with the sattelite tv. I still don't think that counts as camping, but at least it keeps them out of the good spots! And your cannoeing bit sounds fun, but have you ever done white water rafting? Now that's fun.

Vinnie - I'm not sure if you are deliberately misunderstanding Bud Clare or not, but her objection wasn't your opinion, but that the way you worded your setence made it a (logically) false statement. It's not your opinion on the show that was criticized, it was your poor grammer.

So, show of hands, who is definately going to the Gathering this year? Possibles? I'm looking at the timing, and it's unlikely I'll be going, but not a total impossibility.

I have pictures from last Gathering I just found on my laptop, heh... I should post them while I still remember them.

Atilla> I'm vastly impressed that Svend Robinson had the decency to confess before any investigation started and that he's co-operating fully with the police. He's setting a good ethical example for everyone - not just politicians - who've done something foolish. He admitted to his act and has pledged that he will pay whatever consequences society deems necessary.

In other words, it's a non-issue. I find Liberals and Conservatives trying to score politiacl points off this would do wise to think about that old cliche. What was it? Glass houses, throwing stones, something like that. :-)

Vinnie> Buy this book. (points to link)

24: I've watched up to "8:00 p.m." of the first season, then had it spoiled for me. Since then I've not had any desire to watch any more. The part that I watched seemed quite creative and well-written...up until Teri got amnesia. Then I started getting that niggling doubt about "how much bad luck can one person have?" that usually is the first warning sign of a potentially jumping shark. Since then - I dunno. I've read a few synopses here and there and it just doesn't seem like a show I'd enjoy watching that much of. From what I saw, though, it certainly wasn't vapid or unintelligent. In fact, in a world full of reality TV like "The Swan" or "Are You a Hot Millionaire American Idol Survivor Apprentice?" or whatever the hell is on these days, any return to scripted TV save for sitcoms is a good thing. "24" is not the best of the bunch (an honour that will forever belong to "DaVinci's Inquest") but it certainly can't be called vapid or unintelligent when you compare it to the other crap that's out there.

2nd, Monday and Wednesday are my last classes before Finals. I have one final each day of the week.

**WARNING: INCOMING RANT**
No, this isn't about my dad. *sees several people in the shadows faint at that news.*

I was trying to organize a canoe float trip for some kids when I ran into snag. Even if the parents signed a notorized release statement, that wouldn't be good enough to protect against liability. That got me concerned. What the heck is this country coming to? Most parents don't have time to take their kids on trips and with the threat of being sued so high, virtually nobody will want to take kids anywhere for fear of something happenning to a kid and being sued over it. That's ridiculous. We're going to produce generations of kids who don't understand the beauty of the great outdoors or the joy of canoeing down a river.

**END RANT**

Have I mentioned that once upon a time, one of my ambitions was buying a canoe for the sole purpose of going on float trips?

I decided to wisely invest a limited amount of my money is reliving some of my younger days . . . by buying old episodes of Transformers. [Yes, I already own a complete set of gargoyles on VHS] Yes, it's worth it to relive some of my younger years. [I'm already sensitive about directly answering the question of how old I am so don't bother; some of us want to remain forever young at heart.] Some of the plots, in retrospect, seem . . . utterly stupid like cloning Optimus Prime [Teletran 1 couldn't determine where the real Autobot Matrix of Leadership was or did Megatron actually clone that]. It was nice to see the origin of Computron, again.

Sorry, DC's been bugging me these last few days. and he must . . no . . he shall pay dearly.

Reality TV - I'd still like to see a show where a group of Mexicans try to cross the border illegally with interesting obstacles and the big threat hanging over people's head about letting the border patrol know the gps coordinates.

Yea, Patrick didn't update us on the number of days until the Gathering today.

Damien - <hmm gene pool needs more chlorine> Disagree. Need to substitute 1/10 on the chlorine for . . hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid.

Lain: I think the poster missed the point of the book. I just responded in kind. You sound as if you're trying to rebrand 'Nineteen Eighty Four' as a morality tale about how 'nasties' (possibly foreign) took over because the population didn't have guns. The whole point was about the ability of your own government to curb *every* freedom: including of thought. Big Brother wasn't terrifying simply because nearly everyone was scared of him, but because so many people loved him -- including, ultimately, Winston. Even if he'd been granted the freedom of wielding a weapon, what good would it do him to use it? But at any rate, the argument is silly because lot of happy, free societies keep their government in check without guns. Indeed, hearing you talk about the Patriot Act, one wonders whether having pro-firearms people in government might be counterproductive as a solution for safeguarding civil liberties.

Lain: A-ha! I noticed this intensely irritating "could care less" business. At first I thought people were making this mistake a lot out of coincidence. It's just horrible.

Todd: I know that grammar classes in the UK are as rare as hen's teeth. We ended up having to basically muddle along ourselves. Although it could have been much worse judging by some of the bizarre assignments in some of the textbooks (which thankfully our teacher never asked us to do). According to the paper today, these were only the first in a wave of 'empathy' assignments sweeping through classrooms. My personal favourite was "Write Duncan's diary for the night he was murdered."

Brutis: '24' is a drama series. Each season is 24 episodes and every episode is in 'real time'. Apart from that, and the lovely use of split screens, it's a normal television show -- although easily the best on television that I'm aware of right now IMO.

vinnie>> <<"Which are You" worked better with an Exclamation Mark than a Question Mark because it was not meant to be a question>>
uuuh, if it wasnt meant to be a question, then i win and you and gside lose, nyah ;)
<<"24" is supposed to be a STUPID, VAPID TV show>>
inasmuch as every TV show is stupid and vapid, naturally.
<<that gives a running commentary in the life of a law enforcement agent in one twentyfour hour period>>
which is a neat idea, you must admit.
<<The catch is that each episode only documents an hour of his life>>
the other catch is that each hour is usually filled with lots of shooting, complicated terrorist plottings - and possibly torture - what more could you want!? (plus jack bauer is just yummy!) :D

bruits>> <<dont send me hate mail (unless you want to) but i have to ask what is 24>>
why would we send hate mail about that? in any case, i think vinnie answered your question fairly adequately. :)

gside>> <<Webster and Cambridge both say bite>>
well then, they suck. oxford rules! *snootysnootsnoot*
extra "u"s for EVERYONE!!!! ;)
<<And I don't see the phrase's origin particularly related to computers>>
possibly related to a digitally recorded sound segment? .. maybe its a british/canadian thing? ed?
if you do a search for the word "soundbyte" you get lots of results, but then you do also for "soundbite". byte makes much more sense to me because of the digital aspect "soundbytes are small, digestible sound clips for your user interface" but.. whatever i guess.
<<Capital. I don't think anyone gets their letters specifically from the U.S. government>>
yeah yeah yeah, but i covered my butt by saying mistakes still slip in. (me learned spelly all goodly but not always, especially when sweepy at 3am *zzz* ;))
<<But it's still second person. To be is congjugated I am, you (sing.) are, he/she/it is, we are, you (pl.) are, they are>>
*sigh*
it comes down to: is it "which ARE you?" or "which are YOU!" ? since vinnie himself has claimed it was intended as a statement and *not* a question, that would make it the SECOND option, not the first.

greg b>> <<Okay, turns out that 24 will be played this Sunday>>
woo!

todd>> <<However, judging from what I've heard and read about the decline of education recently, I'm fearing that it's the latter>>
yeah, i agree, unfortunately.

leo>> <<It's like.. your 'signature.' ;p>>
if you say so ;)

leo/damien>> <<LOL! I read it like this: "Only Children or Idiots use the term anymore, for name calling. Which are you?" (as in: "Are you a child or an idiot?") ;D>>
see above response to gside. if it was meant as a question, as gside previously attested, then the error was in punctuation. however vinnie has subsequently stated it was meant as a statement and NOT a question, therefore the error is gramatical and not punctuation..al..thingy..(i dont think that word exists but.. you know what i mean) :P
.. can we stop this discussion? its very pointless..

on an unrelated note, here is the website of the *cough* "security consultants" that were killed in iraq a few days ago. i looked them up, because i do that.
http://www.blackwaterusa.com/
"our mission is to provide the client with veteran military, intelligence and law enforcement professionals with demonstrated field operations performance tempered with mature experience in both foreign and domestic requirements. we employ only the most highly motivated and professional operators, all drawn from various u.s. and international special operations forces, intelligence and law enforcement organizations"
...though in their defence, they DO have one HECK of a sweet-@$$ training facility.. me wanty.. *drool*

Annie> <<On another note, why is everyone so darn concerned with grammer, punctuation, and that blasted thing called spelling?>>: It's not so much concerned as too many repeated errors get annoying. We're rather tolerant of typos from people who know they're wrong (see Green Baron), but otherwise that's all you have to present yourself in this type of forum.

Lain> <<it is simply a turn of phrase intended to describe language of english in its propor form>>: Especially of the more Brittish nature (u in colour, etc.).

If people start using "it's" as a possessive, I'm going to become a hermit and never talk to anyone again. I thought my english teacher and I were the only ones who sat around and complained about that! Education lacks grammar severely lately. In 10th grade I hit honors english and it was a rude awakening - 3 years later I think taking that class was the best decision of my life. Okay, I've come to realise a few things very recently.

The CR stopped being fun for me a long while back. not any of your problems, just mine. 99% of my posts in here for a long time have been me yelling at other people. I'm just tired of it.

I'm not leaving the CR entirely, but I am resigning as a moderator. And let's face it, I've been a crappy one too. Though some of you already knew that. I am not apologizing to anyone, because I do not feel I owe one to any body in here, let's make that clear.

I will not be gone entirely, if a topic in here catches my interest I'll post, and when the next waves of stories are released, I'll be in here.

If anyone wants to keep up with me, click my name for my personal blog ;)

Two things.

One, Lynati is right - if he's a troll then you're handling the situation in the worst way possible by *feeding* the troll. Ignoring him would have been best, but insulting him is foolish and as a mod, you should be "above" such things. You should especially refrain from making the types of comments you did. Which brings me to point two:

There's nothing funny about molestation. At all. Not even using it as an insult. Using that as an insult only brings you down into the lowest common denominator.

Silvadel: Yes, I know about coursework and grade inflation, but it's a reformed version of the O-Level (which stands for Ordinary Level GCE). It's a direct replacement. Of course, Rowling took O-levels and taught GCSE so I'm sure she's familiar with both.

DPH: Well, Brooklyn's one of the few characters that could helm it. But I'm not really investd in his character enough to really follow it. And to all intents and purposes, there was only one Macbeth episode before "City of Stone" (since "Lighthouse" had him as principally a secondary villain). I don't think having too few arc episodes is exactly Timedancer's problem, although that's more a difficulty of the later seasons than S1-2 admittedly.

Annie: Good luck!

Lynati: Well, last I saw DA had a short season well underway: a premiere plotted (outline pending), one story pitched with no outline, and a six/seven episode run based on stories already outlined and partially drafted. Given the level of staff involvement, the idea at that stage was to have a short season that was a vehicle to get people interested in the series again for a recruitment drive (although with the potential to easily expand the season by adapting one of the many outlines -- not all of which would require much amendment). While I was there, I always thought that if all manpower to the series was equal, DA could be released soonest of all the current series. Congratulations on Timedancer, though.

"A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to."
Thus, I enter 6th because that's exactly the number I wanted.
