DPH: Oh yeah. About half of my classes are based on CLEP tests. But you know what? I stopped caring. The classes that I am CLEPping out of are the classes I have VERY little interest in taking, such as Humanities, or classes that I have taken but I can't transfer (Math. I passed MATH190 with no problem, but it won't transfer to a MATH110. Go fig).

Normally, I am baised against those classes too, ESPECIALLY the "Paper MCSE" people who go to MSCE boot camp.

But, like I said, I stopped caring. I've been trying to go to school for the past 6 years, and every single job I have had has prevented me from going. And to get a stable job, I need to get a degree. So I said hell with it, I've got experience, so I just want a degree.

So... I've become everything I've hated... and I just don't care.

Sorry to rant.

Silvadel - You're right about people relocating to avoid the income tax, but they'll also drive to avoid the tobbacco tax.

That's the problem with small states. In Arkansas, there is a law against high usury (a very, very good idea IMO), but as a consequence, banks/credit card companies don't want to put their headquarters in Arkansas.

Fire Storm - <I find it interesting that Vodka can be used a an antifreeze since it is EXTREMELY hard to get it to freeze> Well, think about it. Vodka was made in Russia to withstand VERY cold climates. <If all goes well, I will graduate in 13 months via a VERY accellerated program> I'm very biased against those programs that say take one class a week for x months (2 years or less) and end up with a bachelor's degree. Half of it must be based on passing clep tests.

I got an idea for a new L&O series: GTS. Law & Order: Gargoyle Taskforce Squad. They're tasked with investigating crimes where the gargoyles were involved. With frequent guest stars of Elisa Maza and Matt Bluestone.

Thursday night I discovered a secret. I had a hidden batch of kittens around my house, belonging to my beloved Hunter. Seh's so clever. If they hadn't made any noise that night, I would not have figured out they even existed. My adult cats are pretty clueless: twice I've caught them playing with a snake.

Imzadi - I have a challenge problem for you. Whip up plans for a model version of the Cyberbiotics Airfortress 2 that will fly. I read your resume, surely with all that knowledge it wouldn't be too difficult for a genius like you to design, right?

Did you guys hear about the Jeopardy player who's been on for like 19 days straight? They finally had a category he didn't know much about: alcohol.

Patrick - <Private space flight... the first step toward space tourism.> So the mile high club will be replaced by the . . umm . . zero gravity club? Sorry somebody had to say it.

Bud-Clare - <They just announced Vegas.> I can come up with a number of possible things I suspect you guys would try to do to me if I attended a Gathering in Las Vegas, and I have one answer: I really wish I had the money to go.

*wonders about the Gunjack's whereabouts.*

The moron is being a complete jerk. Expects me to live with only news reports shown on tv. What a jerk.

Since I know absolutely nobody in this cr cares, I'm going to occupy space by saying that I have taking 50 mg of Zoloft for a couple of weeks now. I can't feel any effects, but then again, it took me about a month and half last time to feel the effects aside from increased drowsiness. I think it's just a matter of body size: heavier people take a longer time to feel the effects of medication.

Dezi- well, A-kon is a pretty big event. It pulls more than ten thousand over the weekend, many of which are in costum the entire time. From experience, if you don't know where someone is or a general idea where they will be, chances are you would not find them. We lost GunJack for a whole day... though he was sitting still. Also the names on the badges are pretty small. I remember Josh making a similar comment abour that problem at Gathering 01, but said it was a good excuse to stare at a woman's chest.

The Alcohol thing> Due to the freezing aspect I remembered something a friend told me once, so I questioned him about that topic again. Here are the facts he told me; When the men in the Siberian part of Russia run out of Vodka, they take coolant, originally meant for their tractors, let it run down a metal rod or crowbar and the liquid that drops off the end is almost pure ethanol, the rest froze on the way down. I don't know how cold it is there normally but I think it would be around -30 degrees Celsius. I think this sounds like a practical way to separate water and ethanol, if it really works.

Yggdrasil>><<Well I finally reserved my room for the gathering>>
Lucky you. I really would like to come too but I lack the financials.

Gside>><<You use Linux, and are therefore not an average user>>
I often switch between Gentoo Linux and Windows 2000 advanced Server. It depends mostly on my mood which one I'll use. I use Windows almost as much as Linux. But sometimes I have to start my Sun SPARC Ultra 1 with Solaris 9 if I have to program some shell scripts for Network-Management. As a pure Unix this system is definitely way off the average line. But when I'm finished studying it will improve negotiations with companies to know and be able to handle different OS'.

See you all.

Greetings;

Well I finally reserved my room for the gathering. I'm still available as transportation if anyone needs a ride to the Gathering. I'll be leaving from around London, ON and traveling down the 401, which will pass right by Pearson International. If anyone needs a lift just let me know.

Firestorm: I'm not sure about the water/alcohol freezing thing. Water and ethanol mix perfectly (If you want to see a neat trick; take 50ml of distilled water and mix it with 50ml of 100% ethanol. You will actually have less than 100ml when you finish.), so I actually think that the ethanol is actually frozen and becomes a part of the lattice. In fact I am sure of it, I just thought of an example. If you freeze water and alcohol together and let them thaw slowly, the alcohol does not melt first. The entire mixture will thaw at the same temp.

New Jersey went and did it -- Hard for me to believe... They were working on passing a massively huge budget that was 13% larger than last years budget and included 1.5 billion dollars of long term debt... Well by the time they were adding pork to it the budget they passed was OVER SIXTEEN PERCENT above last years budget with a whopping 2 billion dollars in long term debt bonding to cover current expenses... Considering that a lot of the counterbalance is a 40% increase in the top tax rate (and yes a 9% state tax does definitely influence those wage earners to move to other states) and another large increase in the tobacco tax(which essentially will in my opinion lower revenue not raise it because tons of smokers will be going to neighboring states for their fix)...

In essence this budget is a complete disaster that the people of NJ will pay for for the next thirty years...

---

About the only worse thing NJ could do is the other thing they are working on and that is making it permanent that the teachers never have to pay their half of the social security tax and that they will never have any co-pay on their medical insurance... That is on the fast track to passage as the teachers unions pretty much OWN the government.... What people arent considering is that once this is done every state union will want the same thing... This at a time when if you work in private industry you typically get no health benefits at all that you do not pay for completely out of pocket...

Dezi> <<So I have no clue how to get rid of it>>: If nothing else works, check that it's not read only in its properties, make sure it doesn't get run at startup, then reset.

Martin> <<Sometimes you have to compile software, through their source code, yourself>>: Yes, but since that scares off most people (I wouln't want to do it on a system that doesn't come with a default compiler), anything designed for a large enough audience will have a pre compiled option available.
<<I had to compile the Xvid codec in order to make it work with GenToo Linux>>: You use Linux, and are therefore not an average user.

Fire Storm> <<Most likely there is some newbie who comes in there weekly at least to ask>>: No one really pays attention to them calling themselves a grog shop. Everyone knows it as Barnacle Bill's, not the full Barnacle Bill's Grog Shop.
<<Those with weak or undesirable genes still manage to reproduce>>: I'm sure there are still a bunch of bad genes that stop (or are linked to genes that stop) the attraction of mates. That, and with civilization and whatnot, we're redefining what's weak and undesirable.
<<you get the chance to mount a barely legal virgin female in a short skirt>>: Not a very good chance with the short training time I have.
<<And I won't make it like the "Games we play in hell">>: Why not just call it by its true name, musical holes?
<<I am sure the bobcats won't mind having a little on them>>: You can always find a second being to participate in any fetishes.
<<Didn't I... wait... huh? What was I... OH! SHINEYS!>>: The memory thing's getting out of hand. Then again, I can rifle through your wallet directly, and you'll never know.
<<With the occasional key frame that has a complete picture>>: Which is why I said usually.

Yggdrasil> <<Methanol is a toxic alcohol>>: But still fun for sloshing around empty water cooler jugs then lighting the fumes.
<<one of the major problems associated with Asparatame is the fact that during digestion, methanol is released, which is then converted to formaldehyde>>: I love the taste of formaldehyde in the morning.

Greetings;

Firestorm; Yes methanol is called "Wood Alcohol" mainly due to the old practice of distilling methanol from wood. Methanol is a toxic alcohol, primarily becuase our bodies convert it into formaldehyde. As a matter of fact one of the major problems associated with Asparatame is the fact that during digestion, methanol is released, which is then converted to formaldehyde. A reason to avoid Nutra Sweet. I prefer sweetners like Sucralose, which is simply indigestible and not toxic.

When it comes to alcohol, ethanol is the only one that is safe to drink and it is the reason why you should not be distiling alcohol unless you know what you are doing. Many a person has dies because of methanol poisoning because of a bad batch of moonshine.

Well, shows you what I get for getting my alcohol info from the Something Positive Livejournal.

Now, at -80C, does the ALCOHOL freeze or does the water in the solution freeze, trapping the alcohol in the water's crystal lattice?

*laughs* Yeah... just what I was thinking too!

Speaking of alcohol... ethanol is what you drink, methanol is "wood alcohol", correct?

Greetings:

Firestorm and Gside: A quasi science question. Pure ethanol will freeze at -117oC, liquid nitrogen is about -196oC depending on atmospheric pressure. Since most Vodka is only about 40% EtOH, it stands to reasopn that it would have a freezing point of around -40oC. There is a big equation to figure it out, bu ti happen to know that if you put a bottle of vodka into a clinical -80oC it will freeze.

As to the antifreeze properties of alcohol, their quite true. Many cases of extreme hypothermia survival have involved high alcohol levels alcohol. It should also be noted that the high alcohol levels probably led to the situations in the first place.

<Firestorm>I find it interesting that Vodka can be used a an antifreeze since it is EXTREMELY hard to get it to freeze (I think it even shrugs the effects of liquid nitrogen).

That explains why I was feeling fine in my friend's pool despite how cold it was a few nights ago. :-)

<They've gotten pretty smart by natural selection. The stupid ones get sued out of existance.>
True. Lately I have been wondering if humans are adaptable any more. I mean, with today's "No baby should die" mentality, it's no longer survival of the fittest. It's simply "Survival of the richest," so the truly undesirable genes are no longer weeded out. Those with weak or undesirable genes still manage to reproduce, so natural selection is no longer valid in humans. An artificial selection process wouldn't be efficient because it would rely on humans (or machines run by humans) to do the selection, and humans are inherently flawed. I think the only real solution to this is to eliminate the undesirable genes via genetic manipulation.

Gside>><<No average user wants to compile source. Even I don't compile my own source>>
Sometimes you have to compile software, through their source code, yourself. I had to compile the Xvid codec in order to make it work with GenToo Linux. But some guys overdo it a bit, like my OS Professor. In his opinion the only way to ensure a safe and stable OS is to compile your software manually, even your Linux kernel.

Dezi> <<how is it different than Divx>>: XviD is open source, while DivX is controlled by one company (and you have to pay for some versions of it).
<<how do I go about getting it (or what's an easy way)?>>: I'd reccommend through divx-digest.com, more specifically http://www.divx-digest.com/software/xvid.html or http://files.divx-digest.com/software/codec/XviD-1.0.1-05062004.exe

Martin> <<You can get the source code at http://www.xvid.org/>>: No average user wants to compile source. Even I don't compile my own source, and I've even picked up a c compiler for windows.

Damien> <<mpeg is a video/ audio compression format>>: Kind of, MPEG is the Motion Pictures Experts Group, which named its video standards after itself.

<<someone who is not so full of it, hav a better answer?>>: There are many different ways to describe movies and sound in computer terms, so you need something that tells your computer what to do when it comes up against one of these ways, which is called a codec. Because people tend to aruge over which way is better and go off to do their own thing, there are quite a few codecs flying around (DivX, Xvid, Ogg, Matroska...). Luckily the people you get your video from tell you what you need if it doesn't come with windows.

Fire Storm> <<so no adding antifreeze to it, huh?>>: I believe there are some gnomes who like antifreeze.
<<you ARE 21, right? Go in there and find out!>>: Sorry, they'd probably serve it is someone asks, but I don't believe anyone generally asks.
<<you never know how stupid theme park owners can be!>>: They've gotten pretty smart by natural selection. The stupid ones get sued out of existance.
<<the man who catches her gets to mount her>>: I might even train for that.
<<Make sure the guys are completely deprived of sex (and masturbation) and relentlessly teased for about 2 weeks first>>: On second thought...
<<They make little colonies in the wall, the ceilings, and in jars of Jiff chunky peanut butter>>: Sounds like my chances are good of not stomping them.
<<What about gerbil pudding?>>: For eating, it's good. For slathering on other animals in whatever gear we were talking about, that'll be a fetish.
<<That takes remembering things! I can't be expected to do that!>>: Right, so where's that ten bucks you owe me?
<<I know have a "Xvid bundle" that says self extract sitting on my desktop and it won't "do" anything>>: Usually condecs just work through whatever video players you already have, so whenever they do something you wouldn't be able to tell that it's what's doing it.
<<and I can't delete it>>: That's rather odd. Are you sure you waited long enough after running the install that the install program quit entirely? Occaisonally they lurk around a couple minutes protecthing the file you ran them from.

Damien> <<so it knows that say 1000101010 means blue pixel and 11111110111 means black (or something)>>: Mostly, but describing each pixel would take up way too much room, so they usually only talk about what changed from frame to frame.

ok as far as i know a codec is a "library" (think reference) that your video player uses to understand the compression in a video file... so it knows that say 1000101010 means blue pixel and 11111110111 means black (or something)

Damien: thanks about the Mpeg stuff, but really its the "codec" and binary stuff that I have no clue about.

XviD is an open source MPEG4 codec. You can get the source code at http://www.xvid.org/ and compile it on your Windows / Linux ...
You can also get the binaries at http://www.koepi.org/.

OK I have a question for the computer junkies (which is pretty much everyone here). :)
I have Divx, for watching my downloaded Inu Yashas. But the dude that is subbing them says he's gonna start using Xvid. Question: What is Xvid, how is it different than Divx, and how do I go about getting it (or what's an easy way)? Thanks. Weeeeeee!

Unfortunately, it is WAY too common for people to not show up.
<Anyways, I have no other family execpt my sister, parents and my grandma I come from a small family>
Well, then that's ok.

Patrick: <Private space flight... the first step toward space tourism. So perhaps... Gathering 2054: Sea of Tranquilty!>
Personally, I wanted that prize so I am a LITTLE pissed that Rutan is going to get it by flying that little ship that is ONLY capable of going up to 62 miles AND it needs a boost from a mother ship!
BUT NASA is looking to awarding private space ventures prizes for space stuff, possibly including multi-hundred million dollar prizes for the first orbital flight, so it's all good.
Guess now that Rutan made his first flight, companies may start to see this as an economically viable venture, so maybe I can actually get FUNDING!

Gside: <That too. Pretty much anything on the upper half of the proof scale>
Ah... I see... Hmm... how about some homemade stuff? It's only methanol, after all!
<I only looked up grog because there's a "grog shop" near me.>
Ok... you know, you live in a weird place
<That was my plan. My father has a K'nex rollercoaster he uses as a physics demonstration, which he got me to build, and every time I stop in he gets me to fix whatever the kids have broken since>
OH! That makes more sense than seeing you as the engineer at a theme park
<Frame that nice Dr. Lechter down the street>
Na. They know Lecter has better taste than that.
<But they've already plugged up that hole.>
No, no, no. Facehugger hugs you and implants you while you feel orgasmic bliss greater than you shall ever feel, then it falls off. A few hours later, up comes the children and the process is started again
<There is a Edison historical area here with a house and labs. And we've even gotten building 11 returned from the Ford Museum>
Really? Do we still have one or two of his buildings or simply replicas?
<I was saying that you still owe me that ten bucks I lent you.>
Right! Do you accept PayPal?
<Coveralls implies a bib top.>
OR am I thinking of overalls? Ah, who cares! More skirts!
<As long as you only go after small animals and don't do any structural damage, it should be good.>

Yes his name was Joe. Anyways, I have no other family execpt my sister, parents and my grandma I come from a small family, I have nieces and nephews from my sister but I know who they all are and they are not old enough to get married for sure and my grandmother only has me and my sissy as grand kid. That could have been a little weird not to sure if I would have wanted to find any long last family if I had any, but I don't. But your right a little to close of a situation. Froggleggs: LM's grandfather ALSO died in mid April. AND I know that there are some people in LM's family that doesn't know we got married for various reasons.
AND I know that the main reason her grandmother didn't come was she was still mourning over the loss of her husband.
Let's just see, just for arguement...
