Work has me on the road this week. I'm posting from a hotel in the middle of West Virginia coal country. It's a good thing they've got the internet out here, 'cause the mountains sure screw up the cel phone reception.
When someone says "I assume..." it always makes me think of the villian in "Under Seige 2: Dark Territory." Editted for general audiences, he said "Assumption is the mother of all f(oul)-ups."
56 days left until the spell is broken and they live again! Gargoyles Season One comes to DVD on December 7, 2004!

Priorities, priorities, priorities.
Lady Mystic & Fire Storm - Just sent you guys an email at Lady Mystic's email addy. It's important but not urgent.
**YuGiOh Spoilers**
Alright, I finally got to see the 1st episode of the series shown in America. (If you do further research, you'll discover there was a 1st season made in Japan that never aired in the U.S.) The voices haven't definitely changed: Kiba and Mokuba sounded . . harsher than they are in the current season. Poor Mokuba was completely oblivious to the big wrong that Seto Kiba did to Yugi. I never did quite catch what Mokuba's reaction was to Seto blantly tearing apart the Blue Eyes card that Yugi's grandfather had. Later on, we know that Mokuba knew about it, but, given Mokuba's innocence, I would have to wonder how Mokuba would have reacted.
Speakign of that, I would like to go back to do a count of all the interaction between Seto and Yugi to see just how bad Seto has treated Ygui and how patient/kind Yugi has been to Seto.
1)Seto destroyed Yugi's grandfather's Blue Eye's card.
2)Yugi 'freed' Seto's mind so he could understand the heart of the card.
3)Seto intervened in a deal where Pegasus captured Seto's cards to use in a duel against Yugi so that Yugi could win. (1st time Seto actually did anything nice for Yugi, but the motivation was way-off)
4)Yugi saved Seto's deck after said duel.
5)Seto crushed Joey's spirits at duellist kingdom.
6)Seto used trickery to win his 2nd duel against Yugi, resulting in the 1st time Yugi and the spirit of the puzzle were at odds with each other
7)Yugi saved Seto's and Mokuba's soul by winning the match against Pegasus
8)Seto gave Yugi a ride home (2nd thing Kiba did for Yugi)
9)Yugi (& friends) saved Seto from the VR world (we later learn that those Board of Directors were at least semi-justified in treating Seto - considering how Seto acquired the company)
10)Although being manipulted, Seto organized the battle city tournament, resulting in . . . increased safety for Yugi (considering what would have happenned if there was no tournament, Yugi probably wouldn't have lasted) and gving Ygui the opportunity to earn the Egyptian god cards - side note: of course, Seto now has a pretty good database of who possesses what cards. Of course, I have to wonder if Seto didn't 'acquire' some of that info by records from Duelllist Kingdom.
11)Seto and Mokuba tracked Yugi down after he went missing (Seto wanted to keep track of all of Yugi's duels just so he knows every card in Yugi's deck so Seto could work up a counter)
12)Seto encouraged Yugi during Yugi's duel to acquire Slifer.
13)Seto 'saved' Yugi from rare hunters while chasing after Joey - side note: Seto did it in a lot fewer steps than Yugi could.
14)Yugi and Seto double dueled to rescue Yugi's friends and Mokuba. Through grudging cooperation from Seto, they won.
15)Tai saved Mokuba, resulting in Seto helping Yugi find Joey to save him from Merik.
16)Yugi saved Seto and Mokuba in the VR world
16)Seto willingly gave Yugi the "Magic Fiend Sanctuary" card. I don't count Seto giving Obselik to Yugi as much because that wasn't a sacrifice for Seto, considering that Obselik was handed to Seto. This is the 1st time Seto did something nice to Yugi for the right reason. Seto justified the action to himself as a means of testing Yugi's skill level. If that was true, then Seto would have to admit that his latest battle with Yugi wasn't a test of Yugi's skill.
Ok, time to count it up - Seto treating Yugi badly (3 times) plus Yugi treating Seto kindly (5 times) minus Seto helping Yugi for at least halfway right reasons (3 times). Wow, Seto's balanced his actions against Yugi.
**End YuGiOh SPoilers**
I liked the Headline "Just In: Undecided Voters are stupid". At this point, if you don't know who you're voting for in the presidential election, . . . Honestly, I don't know much about my local elections. Yes, I'm voting for Marvin Parks over Vic Synder, not just because Marvin Parks is a Republican, but because I know Marvin Parks. He used to be my bus driver and he was also a math teacher at Junior High School. Not just that, but Marvin Parks understands a very important issue dear to my being: Highway Safety. I live next to a very dangerous section of highway where lots of accidents have occured over the years. He understands what I'm talking about, since bus route used to go through my area. He has told me that my state highway department is going to install stop light to help with the traffic problem. If it happens, that gets my vote.

Ross: Ahhh. Nice to see someone proving that old saying about making assumptions… (That there hadn’t been new fic because you hadn’t bothered to check, that everyone had lost interest because there hasn’t been new fic “in the last year”, that Bishansky is the “only one on staff left” simply because he’s the only one on staff who answered you immediately...)
-.-
There are in fact several more seasons of TGS including Gargs 4 and 5, TD 5, DA 3, and Bad Guys 1 being worked on at present. And while there are certainly fewer of us around than there used to be, Bishansky is hardly the only person left on TGS staff. He’s a moderator for this CR, which is one of the reasons he posts so regularly, but very few of the staff actually post in this room on a regular basis. A lot lurk through, and some don’t bother to come here at all- and never did even before coming onto staff.
[but can someone please fill me in on what's happening with possible more seasons of the fics written in TGS?]
They remain very possible. So possible, in fact, that I’m working on one right now. (Well, I’m actually working on six right now of various series, but at the time of this post I only had one open and actively being typed in.)
[I check back in once or twice a year, but I don't remember this Comment Room being around last time.]
This comment room has been around since 1998. It’s rather thoroughly archived week to week. http://tgs.gargoyles-fans.org/cr/archive/index.html
And Spike hasn’t been on staff for TGS for years. She left before I came on, and I’ve been on in some form or another for, hm, over 3 years now.
[The existing seasons kinda left us wanting more, and I've never seen anything that says the project has been discontinued.]
aaand lo, Josh was too distracted to comment.
[Even to this day, with no new fics for the past few years]
As already pointed out, there have been new fics in the last years, a whole new season in 2003 alone.
[Last I checked was ages ago, and I guessed I just missed the whole season in between the times I came around.]
So you immediately came in and started griping about a lack of new fics without even bothering to check and see if there had been any?
[There's even a new series I don't remember being around "Bad Guys," even though there's nothing posted yet. ]
Bad Guys is lain and Gunjack’s baby. There were problems, as in many of the people who first agreed to help them with it utterly flaked. The pair decided to take their plans back for further personal work on it, and have every intention of having a full season ready before all of us Americans are herded into terrorism-free control camps for our own good. ; )
[I guess I'm hoping that there's another place you all moved to.]
No, we’re pretty much still stuck on TGS.
[ So many talented people were involved with the first seasons of these series, I don't understand how everyone could give up on it all at once.]
I had them all killed so I could take control of the second half of TD season 5. There was no other way my dream of having the last of the gargoyles species die before the year 2200 would happen.
[ Someone please clue me in! ]
Trying to. Why don’t you come to the next Gathering and we can walk you through TGS’s current progress in person? It’s in Vegas.
http://gathering.gargoyles-fans.org/
[I never knew only a handful of people carried each season.]
That’ because it’s a recent development. Many of the original staff either burned out after season 2, lost interest, or had their lives overrun by RL issues like work and serious schooling to devote enough time to the project.
[but I don't think I can afford the time to help with plots of character developement If however you'd ever need someone to help flush out kinks, or beta-read something,.]
I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you meant to type “plots OR character development”. And even then, if you have no conception of the current developments in character or plot, just how do you intend to beta them? And while on that note, misspelling a word (“development”, no third ‘e’) while offering your talents as an editor/betader does not leave the best of impressions.
And TGS has nominally decided that it isn’t that we need more people right now- it is that those of us who are writing fics actually need to buckle down and finish them.
[There's no links to email addresses of staff members on the TGS page]
you mean, besides the “Have any mail for the TGS crew? Found a bad link in the website? Email tgs_info@yahoo.com” on the front page?
[so I don't know how else to contact someone besides leaving messages here]
It’s faster to leave a message here anyway.
Anyway. Hi room! Just to catch up, I moved to Texas a couple weeks ago. And I’m having to replace the OS on my computer because Windows ME has starting eating itself the last couple days and doing silly things like refusing to start in anything but safe mode. And I had to go learn basic html code to post the convention content info, but that was kind of cool. I’m more or less doing well, and I managed to re-learn all of Broadsword Form before I left Maryland. And there might be kittens soon, too.
Incidentally, you’ve still got about 3 weeks to create an entry for the cover of the Las Vegas convention calendar contest, if anyone is interested in that.

To Ed, Greg, and Todd,
Thanks for responding, even if it took me awhile to get back to you. I had no idea a whole season of Pendragon came out last year. It just goes to show you how long it's been since I was around. Last I checked was ages ago, and I guessed I just missed the whole season in between the times I came around. I'm kind of excited about reading it though, because I know I'll have to skim through the previous seasons to refamiliarize myself with the plot. It really has been a long time.
I never knew only a handful of people carried each season. When I remember back on reading freash chapters, there always seemed to be at least a half dozen writing creidts , not to mention series credits and artwork. Sure, I knew a select few of you were responsible for the overall storylines, but I didn't know it was so demanding.
one of you asked if I would be interested in writing. 4 years ago I would have laughed at you, because I've never written a thing outseide of high school compositions. This past year though I've taken up writing Harry Potter fanfiction, and it turns out I'm pretty good. I've got a strong following (see link), and am having a lot of fun. So I'd like to help you, but I don't think I can afford the time to help with plots of character developement. If however you'd ever need someone to help flush out kinks, or beta-read something, let me know, or tell me who to contact to sign-up. Probably within the next two weeks I'll have comepletely re-read the whole series (all four actually), and I'm good with names, dates, and keeping the mythology straight.
Greg, as it seems like you're the only one still a staff member of TGS, let me know please. There's no links to email addresses of staff members on the TGS page, so I don't know how else to contact someone besides leaving messages here.

The whole point of being wired is to make it look like your not wired, and that looked a little to obvious to me. Seriously, I just finished reading the Gargoyles Saga Episode "Offers" (from TGS, Season 2), and I was deeply moved by it. The show, after "The Gathering, Parts I and II," more or less starting developing a humanistic quality within Xanatos, but never we never really saw inside the hearts of either him or Fox. My hat is once again off to the writing staff on this site for truly making not only the Xanatoses, but also Owen, feel more human. That was definitely an episode worthy of a second read.
How's that for more emotion? ( ;

Besides, the real enemy here is McDonald's. I was cleaning my closet the other day, looking for old magazines to throw away, and I came across an old "Maxim" with a few startling facts about the corporation. They have restaurants all over the world, with a new one opening every few minutes (or hours, I forget which). They have their own university. And apparently, the Pentagon is not allowed to discuss countermeasures for a coup attempt by McDonald's. Ergo, they do not confirm that McDonald's is a threat, nor do they deny it.
Even if they're not planning a global attack, McDonald's is still a threat. Humans eat there all the time, develop health problems, and then expect McDonald's to assume responsibility for their stupidity, and give them free money. One of the things Demona left out of her little tirade about our species is a lack of responsibility, although Reynard did pick up the slack there. But anyway, lawsuits weaken our economy. And we all know where the money comes from when a lardass lacks the willpower to put down the Big Mac and pick up a salad or a set of weights. Not that I'm a vegetarian. It's just that there is a way to eat meat with less saturated fat. Namely, cook it yourself at home. Then, you know you're actually getting real meat.
Another reason I hate McDonald's. At work the other day, every McD's restaurant in my zip code placed a delivery order (I work as a driver for Pizza Hut). Amazingly, we have five of them in a five mile radius. Anyway, each one of those restaurants ordered between twenty and thirty dollars worth of pie, and not one of those assholes tipped me. They gave me exact change every time. Granted, I work for an evil empire as well. But at least, when we order Chinese, we tip the guy. And we pay out of the register, just like the tools at McDonald's. Bottom line is, don't eat there. They suck.

Gside: I personally think that terrorists have nothing better to do than attack schools. I mean, we splintered their organization three years ago, and they're probably still regrouping. If Bin Laden isn't dead, he still hasn't managed to get back all the hair dye we confiscated, if the videos are any indication. So, these days they have to take what they can get. They know that if a guy of Arabic descent gets within five miles of a dam or power plant, he'll be detained for questioning faster than you can say "infidel dog." So that leaves them with innocuous targets like schools. Personally, I think they're the ones responsible for cafeteria food. Also, watch for them to start using expired coupons en masse. Oh, and then there's Bin Laden's next master plan: have his men park in front of hydrants, and then tear up their parking tickets.

Patrick: I'm counting on the first season of Gargoyles being unedited. One of the things I hate about seeing the show on Toon Disney is that even though they are showing "Deadly Force" again, they cut out one of the most powerful images, which is Elisa lying on her kitchen floor with a small pool of blood around her upper back. They show the close-up, but not the wider image (which shows us how badly she's wounded). When I first saw that episode a decade ago, even though I was just a snot-nosed High School Freshman, I was still impressed that Disney/Buena Vista would take a risk like that. So hopefully, Disney is using the original tapes as their source, and not the syndicated ones.

If the first season "Gargoyles" DVD sells really well with minimal effort having been invested by Disney, the only incentive that provides Disney is to repeat the process with the second season (most likely in multiple releases). This is one of the rare instances when what the viewers want - uneditted episodes - corresponds exactly with what is most cost-effective for the studio. Transferring those original master recordings onto DVD is super easy if no changes are being made.
I also think the period of hightened sensitivity about imagery of the WTC has run its course. On "C.S.I. New York" last night, the police were looking through a murder victim's sketchbook that contained drawings of the towers. And when I was in NYC for the Gathering 2003, there was certainly no shortage of WTC Twin Tower souvenirs in the gift shop.
Today is October 7. There are 61 days left until the spell is broken and they live again! Gargoyles Season One comes to DVD on December 7, 2004!

Anything circa mid-90's kicks ass, but lately it's been weak. So I haven't watched in months. I guess you could say I've lost faith, but oh well. There are still 6 or 7 seasons that are just purely hilarious.
Gotta head, later.

So, Tharos, what's your opinion of the first season? I myself never really cared for it, except for a few episodes. The animation was a lot cheesier, Smithers was black, and everyone acted out of character. But I suppose that's what first seasons are for. Anyway, I need to start buying the seasons on DVD. I don't plan on buying the first season, though. I think the show hit its creative peak in Seasons 3-9. Do you still watch it? I haven't seen it in a long time (mainly because I work evenings). But I just feel that it jumped the shark on the episode where they brought Homer and Flanders's Vegas wives back. Since then, my interest in it has wavered.
PS: I'm referring to the Simpsons, but you probably already knew that.

Harvester> On the subject of direct to video sequels, I asked Bob Kline about that at the LA Gathering. (Great guy, very insightful.) He called it marqueeship. Disney's corporate culture views its stories as franchises. (Slap the name of the movie on everything) And with DVD and secondary markets it is more cost effective to rehash a known property than try something different and risk having a bomb. The execs know Cinderella II isn't going to be the next Shrek, but enough parents of little kids will buy/rent it to make the money back plus a little extra. Because most audiences remember Cinderella or The Little Mermaid or whathaveyou favorably, they are more likely to see it if only once.
On the topic of revision, I'm generally against it. If the original got me into the theater the studios should be confident enough to believe the DVD will get me into Electronics store. I'm not rushing out to get the Star Wars trilogy because Lucas puts out another box set of the movies every other year. Why plunk down the cash when you know in two years time, there'll be another 'ULTIMATE' edition of the same story. Before Ep. 1, I was Star Wars fan enough to by multiple iterations, but I don't love it that much.
As for Gargoyles> I don't think Disney will do it for the reasons stated by others. Plus, the first season DVD is usually a minimum effort. They fit in the episodes, subtitles and different languages and if someone puts the effort for extras bully for them.
I doubt Disney will make changes because there isn't anyone actively advocating for the changes. In the early days, Disney caught some flak from christian groups, but that's about it. Without someone protesting against Disney has nothing to gain by changing it.
But the real question is if the DVD is a success,(Which I'll do my part of ensure. Dec. 7th baby!) What meddling might Disney do for the second season. But we'll wait and see.

A moment of respect for Rodney Dangerfield, 1921-2004.
Disney may have a lot of money, but I'm still betting they won't spend it on editting the WTC out of "Gargoyles." As I recall, the original skyline shots are still shown in Toon Disny airings of "Awakenings" and the only episode that's ever vanished from the rotation has been "Deady Force," not "The Mirror."

Ok, here's a challenge, go through the entire alphabet and name a country that starts with each letter. This is honor of our current president's lack of knowledge of countries:
A - Argentina
B - Bolivia
C - Chile
D - Denark
E - Estonia
F - France
G - Germany
H - Hungary
I - Iraq
J - Japan
K - Kuwait
L - Lithuana
M - Mexico
N - North Korea
O - Oman
P - Poland
Q - Qatar
R - Russia
S - Spain
T - Thailand
U - Uganda
V - Venezuela
W - Western Sahara
X -
Y - Yemen
Z - Zimbawe
Ok, off the top of my head, I couldn't think of countries that started with O,W,X,Y,Z.

Patrick - <I remember reading a scary little book called "1984" where editting history was accepted practice.> The key to suceeding was severely limiting education. If the masses can't read/write, only oral history remains, which is dangerous. Published books are a necessity, because of hard copies of evidence, but nothing wrong with using computers to back up hard copies. Of course, I'm not quite sure how the world would get to the point of the events of 1984. Also, such a world has big problems: namely without scientific advancement, we place the whole world at risk for suriving severe disasters.
Gunjack - good to see you around.
Stupid VP debate. Why can't both candidates pick somebody really skilled at debating to represent them and let the two professional representatives debate out the issues for the candidates. Does a person have to be a good debater to be a good president? I don't think so.
I would argue that the most important qualification for a president is having the right stands on certain issues and the number two qualification is the ability to choose the right people to serve under him/her.
One of my teachers gave me a mathematical/geometric challenge and, being who am I, I couldn't say no.
I'm beginning to believe the law of averages is very true. In games of chance, regardless of your skill level, you have to lose from time to time. However, I've noticed it all too easy to give the computer an edge with dice rolling events. Simply roll the dice and not display the results until the computer gets what it wants.
In my Philosphy of Critical Thinking Class, we analyzed Socrates's argument that Death is gain. I really felt uncomfortable with that argument, because that argument is one step away from saying suicide is ok and frankly, the inverse of those thoughts (life isn't worth living) have been in my mind too often. At least, we're going to analyze why guys arguments that there is no god and I can't wait to demolish it. The whole argument boils down to the presence of evil negates the concept of a loving god. I really hate the assumption that an all-powerfull and benevolent god would allow evil to exist. Of course, the idea of having free will somehow negates the possibility of an all-powerfull god is an interesting argument in and of itself.
I had an argument with my Cobol teacher about the necessity of recursive functions; thankfully, when I bought a book about Visual C++, I ran across a good example of when recursive functions are needed.

I know revisionism is wrong. But sadly, a number of people in the media business don't seem to think so. The only reason I bought the Indiana Jones DVDs was because I heard that nothing was being added or taken away. Then a friend of mine told me Speilberg had been considering tinkering with them, like he had ET. Now we have George Lucas, who is trying to erase all evidence that the original editions of his Star Wars movies ever existed.
I admire Martin Scorsese, though, and how he left that final shot of Manhattan in at the end of "Gangs of New York," Twin Towers and everything.
Anyway, Patrick, I myself do not advocate revisionism. I was a little drunk when I posted, but reading back over it, Disney has a lot in common with George Lucas. They have more money than they know what to do with, and they're not very intelligent. At least, that's what I gathered from all these straight-to-video sequels we've been seeing. Cinderella II? I thought the phrase "Happily Ever After" used to mean something. I guess not when there's money to be made.
Of course, I still plan to buy the Gargoyles DVD. An evil empire can occasionally do something right.

How would Disney change "The Mirror" to remove the WTC? They'd have to totally re-animate major chuncks of it. I think anyone who thinks its wrong to show historical footage of the Twin Towers needs to have their head examined. I remember reading a scary little book called "1984" where editting history was accepted practice. I think it's MORE disrespectful to be cutting footage and pretending as if the buildings never existed.

I just saw the episode "The Mirror" on Toon Disney, and a thought occured to me. Within this episode, there is a scene where Demona takes Puck to the top of one of the World Trade Centers. This is where the thought struck.
First of all, I don't know what Disney plans to do in the future. I'm going to buy the Season One DVD like everyone else, to hopefully, among other things, persuade them to release Season Two. If they do put the other episodes of Gargoyles on DVD, I really hope they don't revise them, a la George Lucas, and take out the World Trade Centers. I don't know. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. But I think I have every right to be, due to the whole Star Wars DVD debacle (Gunguns at the celebration on Endor? Curse you, George Lucas!). Oh, and then there's that bullshit involving the 20th Anniversary Edition of ET. God forbid they should be holding guns. I mean, they are government agents, and therefore receive guns as standard issue. It's just that with revisionism running rampant in today's liberal society, these thoughts are always at the back of my mind. Here's a link to an article with a different perspective. It's kind of outdated, but I still enjoyed it.
