I was watching a documentary on PBS last night about haunted places in Louisiana, and near the end, it discussed the voodoo queen Marie (I forget her last name; I think that it was something like "Leveau") who had made a guest star appearance in the Season One finale of "Timedancer". I thought that it was rather fun seeing old TGS figures popping up like that and bringing back memories.

Forged on Avalon, it belonged to a god. Loosed on the mortal world it was much more than a mere jewel, it was a talisman that caused the wearer to reveal the pure essence of his or her true self. It was the Eye of Odin. These are its stories...as told by you! Submit your tale of the Eye of Odin in 5000 words or less, or by illustration to the 2005 Gathering Staff by May 1st, 2005. Winners will receive a complimentary copy of the EYE OF ODIN ANTHOLOGY and the accolades of your fellow fans! See the CONTESTS page for all the details, submission requirements and fine print. Good luck and happy story telling.

Don't forget! If you dressed as a character from GARGOYLES, then we want to see your Halloween snaps! Submit them by November 15th to Contests@gargoyles-fans.org

Lynati> <<this piccie is so free it deserves its own flag>>: Not a bad orgy. But the perspective seems a bit off, looks like it's on a steepish slope to me. And the naughty bits are mostly obscured, but that's to be expected with so much concentrated action.

Gside: Yeah, I was hoping I'd be able to trick a newbie into running two hours ahead.

Illusionin: Adding on to what Gside said, it might help to read all first seasons first. I'm focusing primarily on Timedancer, Gargoyles, and Pendragon for right now. I had started out reading the seasons of the Gargoyles Saga. But I've noticed that the page for the second seasons of Gargoyles and Pendragon are identical. That is, both seasons have the same episode listing. So once I'm done with season two of Gargoyles, I plan to go back and read the first season of Pendragon. Besides, a few fans in here cite that one as their favorite, so I'm looking forward to it. So far, I'd have to say that I really enjoyed the first season of Timedancer. I'm in the middle of season two, and the titles of the episodes themselves sound extremely intriguing.

Went to a filk con this weekend and discovered there's fen out there even zanier than the ones in this fandom. Being around so many musically-inclined people makes me think it's time I pulled my instrument from high school band out of mothballs and got back into practice.

What else is going on today? Oh yes... Happy Halloween! And it's "spring ahead / fall back". If you switch it around you'll be running two hours early.

Kathy- glad to hear Ivy is doing better. In personal cat news, Mara's cat has now thrown up on both my scanner and my futon. Anna isn't sick; she's just old and seems to enjoy hacking up hairballs for entertainment. She's recently decided that doing it on my property is especially entertaining. I think she's started to enjoy me repeatedly tossing her off my stuff. And I still lack kittens, but I am patient.
And I just got your email, but if I open it now it'll trigger a new cycle and I'll never get to sleep today...

Gside- dude, this piccie is so free it deserves its own flag. I finished it and it should be up on the AMGC board soon. I'd post a link here but it goes against the rules of the CR to direct link to adult material.

Oh, and to expand on what Damien said, I think you'd get an answer if you actually wrote an interrogative sentence. <is there any clans out there!> is an exclamtory sentence, because it ends with an exclamation point. Real questions end with question marks. Try it and see for yourself.

Draconis > We have 12 cats. When we bought this house it came with a colony of about 30 cats ranging from tame to completely feral. It took nearly a year of trapping, dogs setting boundries so that every cat in the valley didn't hang out here, spaying/neutering, and unhappy trips to the pound to get us down to a population of 8 mostly outdoor and 4 primarily indoor cats.

More reasons why Wal-Mart sucks...

Let's see, cause their hypocracy is so fun. They won't allow certain CDs to be sold in their store unless they're censored, and yet, you can easily pull an R-rated movie like "Wild Things" out of the discount bin and buy it.

I don't know what their problem with Jon Stewart's book is? Somehow it doesn't fit their "family friendly" standards, and yet... yet, they have a selection of "Romance" novels bigger than the Barnes & Noble I work in.

Stupid if you ask me.

Oh, hi lain. Welcome back. How's the great white north, and when will you have regular AIM access again?

My issues with Wal-Mart are mostly related to the spiral of urban sprawl they help to perpetuate and the excess traffic they generate. It seems that very little forethought goes into locating a Wal-Mart beyond the question of "Is there enough land here that we can buy up and pave over?" More engineering needs to be done up front, IMO, to determine if the existing roads in the area are able to handle the extra traffic that a mega-store generates. And they need to stop doing idiotic things like locating the main driveway 50 feet away from the exit ramp of a major freeway.

It's not Wal-Mart who pays the price later to fix the problems they've created by drawing all the new traffic. It's the taxpayers - even those who don't shop there - who must foot the bill to widen the road, install new traffic signals, and reconfigure highway interchanges to provide more capacity.

End of mini-rant.

Yes. Building next to pyramids now? Eh? You what? Huh? Yees, damned megacorps. Reminds me of a comic I saw a while back that showed that evil villains could no longer get secret lairs due to Starbucks being there alreay...actually, it was in a recent What's New with Phil & Dixie in Dragon magazinew before Mr. Foglio went on another break.

It's not all evil in the UK though. Prices are cheaper than Tescos or Sainsbury (there's no less than 6 of these supermarket type superstores in my local area...it's like war....)

Dezi> but look at this way... if Wal-Mart is the only place that most people in your county can shop - isn't it better to be a place that offers lower prices instead of some place that does price gouging? The local merchant is more likely to take advantage of the supply and demand factor than Wal-Mart is.

Sorry to drop a bomb like that and run, but the CR wouldnt let me in for a few days...

HI LAIN!!! *waves*

As for walmart, even if we have to drive 100 miles to do so? My town back in Illinois is the largest town in the county. All the other towns are little farm towns, and congregate to walmart for their needs. Now, yes they could drive to other counties, each full of small towns, and the only big town in the county has a walmart, and thats pretty much it. We would have to drive well over an hour in pretty much any direction to even find a target, much less a mall or competing grocery. Ok so add it all up: Poor family farmers, hellmart, hours drive in the countryside, price of gas. The only thing you can afford is hellmart. It's simply not a choice in the matter. Hell that god awful place shut down TWO major groceries in my town!!

But besides all that: DOES WALMART _REALLY_ NEED TO BUILD NEXT TO THE PYRAMIDS OF THE SUN??? I think not. That is just grossly out of bounds. That's not capitalism. It's arrogance and its just disgusting.

Patrick> I'm aware that the smaller business owners can't compete with the larger corporations due to the volume purchasing = lower prices. However, *most* hometown people try to be loyal to "mom and pop" when a Wal-Mart comes to town (at least in my town). My parents used to be a "mom and pop" hardware store and dad was lower in prices than the competition and still made a good living at it. A lot of people would rather go to the smaller store to do their shopping because it offers them more convenience of not having such a large store to walk around, friendlier service (you actually know the people working there and can visit with them), and a sense of dedication/loyalty to a family instead of a corporation. But when pop is 3x - 5x higher on every item, it's difficult to maintain the kind of loyalty to be able to support mom and pop enough to keep them in business. Consumers' money is just too tight sometimes. I live in the middle of "Wal-Mart country" - headquarters is approx. 45 miles from me, so I'm very familiar with the small business owner -vs- Wal-Mart corporation. The small business that survives is the one who will stick it out until the novelty of a new Wal-Mart in town wears off and if pop is willing to lower his prices to be a tad bit more competitive.
When the Wal-Mart came to my town (pop 2,900) it did force most of the small businesses to come down on their prices in order to survive. But, they were already raping the consumers here and taking advantage of the lack of convenience of being able to shop elsewhere very easily. Not one small business closed down because of Wal-Mart.
Wal Mart has changed considerably since Sam Walton died - his children are not the gentle giants that their father was.

I hope this made sense... it's too bloody early to be thinking ;)

The argument that if Wal-Mart drives the mom and pop stores out of business, it means the small stores' prices were too high to begin with - that's slightly flawed logic. Simple economics dictates that there is never going to be any way a small mom and pop store can compete with a giant corporation with massive buying power. Wal-Mart has lower prices because they purchase in bulk and in doing so they can negotiate much better deals with their suppliers than any small store can ever hope to achieve. To compete with Wal-Mart prices, the independent retailer would often be forced to cut his prices so low that he's selling at a loss. And that's not a sustainable business plan. These days, many don't even bother to stick it out to the inevitable end. That's why the small stores vanish so fast once a Sprawl-Mart moves in.

I have only one thing to say about Corporations like Walmart or McDonald's: "If you don't like them, then don't go in them!"

Corporations get their power from the consumer like you, if you don't buy anything from them then they lose that power. Even if you have to go 100 miles out of your way to do so.

Kathy: I don't shop there. One thing that's also rampant in American society is hypocrisy. So I for one refuse to contribute to it.

As far as McDonald's is concerned, I've learned something about our species. I honestly think it's human nature to shirk responsibility. A person brings something on themself, and the last person they blame is themself. It is true that no one makes a guy eat a Big Mac for lunch every day. And yet after twenty-five years of this deadly habit, when his metabolism is altered and his arteries are clogged, chances are he'll refuse to accept responsibility just like most of the other members of his race.

I'm not passing judgment on any of my fellow Terrans that frequent this comment room with me. Merely commenting on what I observe from day to day. Please click on the link on my name for further reading material.

Wal-Mart -- I recommend a book by Bentley Little, called THE STORE. After all, haven't we all always known they're evil? ;)

The Walmart Thing> I guess Walmart employees do have it pretty crappy - my brother works there and says it sucks. And he's not some lazy, stereotypical teen worker, either.

Check this out. The CORE102 classes at my university are in "clusters"... basically same work, different theme. And I'm finishing up the 101 English so they gave me this packet full of the cluster options. One of them is so made for any Gargs fan:
Gods and Monsters - The "frontiers" in literature - the places where me move a step beyond reality and into the terrifying unknown. By looking at the supernatural, the freakish, the grotesque, the readings question what it means to be human, thereby forcing students to learn about issues that often go unexamined in society, and by extention, themselves.

That one, "Fantasy and Reality," and "Oppression, Resistance, and Protest" sound sweet. Too bad I have to take Acoustics next semester - that Gods and Monsters class sounds like what Weisman would teach if he were a professor.

Wow ! It's too quick. Maybe Wal-Mart offers little prices, but they can afford these. Little shops cannot. And if everybody go only to Wal-Mart (or only in SuperCenters), each little shop will dissappear. And if Wal-Mart is the only shop in a city, be sure they will increase their prices.
Actually I'm not really against SuperCenters but it's true that in most of them employees are considered like dogs (not even like dogs, because most of the time the owner likes its pet). That's my worst grief against them (SuperCenters not pet's owners :)).

Kathy> you hit the nail on the head :)
Personally I have had good luck with the meat dept. at our local SuperCenter, but I've heard complaints about others. *nods*
In my hectic life I appreciate a store where I can get whatever I need and not have to make 3 or 4 different stops and various stores. I also appreciate the lower prices that Wal-Mart is able to offer. If the "small business owner that was ran out of town when a Wal-Mart arrived" has to close - then his prices were too high to begin with and apparently didn't have a problem with taking advantage of being the only store with that merchandise.
I live in a small town where this was a very big problem. The local merchants were so high on their prices that it caused a LOT of people to shop in neighboring towns.
Wal-Marts have done a lot of community services and benefits that the smaller business owner didn't do... even on an adjusted scale.
My only irk with McDonald's is that they charge so much for a soda. A soft drink is one of the most profit making item that a restaurant owner has. They have about 5 cents invested in a large drink.

As far as firing everyone involved in possibly forming an union - there are labor laws that protect such dismissals. So I question the validity of that claim.

Harvester of Eyes > Are you being sarcastic or do you mean that about MacDonalds and Walmart, because if it's the latter then you've passed scary a mile back. Nobody, nobody forces anybody to either eat at MacDonald's or to order extra large portions. Your health. Your choice. It's called personal responsibility and it's an attribute that's being found in increasingly short supply in American society.

The same with patronizing Walmart. You don't like them, don't shop there. I find their meat department a crime against nature, but I appreciate the rest of the store and the fact it allows me the best shopping option of all the local grocery stores.

HoE:> There's been a Walmart with a McDonalds in it for a few years here. <One company gives people diabetes>... Yes, McDonalds gives unhealthy food to the people who willingly walk in and BUY it. I still don't see why that's become such a big deal with people lately. If anyone was ever dumb enough to think that fast food, especially McDonalds's, was good for you... Then I feel sorry for them.

It would appear that Wal-Mart and McDonald's might be working together on this one. There's a Wal-Mart a few miles from my house that actually has a McDonald's inside it. Does anyone have the Pentagon's number? I don't think they're aware of this unholy alliance. One company gives people obesity and diabetes, which ultimately weakens the economy, and then Wal-Mart steps in with its low prices, drives all local businesses into the ground, and then suddenly inflates prices. In the words of Edward Dorn, "We need help, the poet reckoned."

On another note, I actually read an article saying that one of the departments within a Wal-Mart (I think it was somewhere in the midwest) tried to unionize, and so the HQ fired just about everyone working at that Wal-Mart. They also fired random people from the surrounding Wal-Marts (who knew nothing about the unionization attempt) in order to set an example. Yeah, these people are evil. Where's Mr. T when you need him?

Dezi> Same here. Walmart are evil. They've even corrupted the UK. But here it's called ASDA...my fiancee works for them and apparantly it's ok so long as you don't mind having to wear bright neon green throughout most of your working life.

I used to work for them too...until my manager told me the following, regarding my requests for a change in my hours due to my university timetable..

'You can work 9 to 5 or 2 til 10.'

Fat lot of good that was as I had a seminar at 3 on the day in question.

Dezi> I feel you. Don't have much love for Wal-Mart. Its unfortunate they have a yeast-like business model: expand or die. If the stores looked to imrpoving the shopping experience, they miht get some loyalty going and actually survive the Big Crunch that will inevitably come.

Timedancer> I hope TGS can get the link back up on the Director's Cut of Buccaneer. It isn't much, most Director's Cuts are made with a rating system already in mind, but it still something TD fans might enjoy.

DPH > No one is going to want to show up 24 hours in advance to drop off checked luggage, go home, then come back again the next day to fly. Most of the time, my luggage isn't even fully packed until 10 minutes before I walk out the door... and I barely trust the airlines with it for the 6 to 8 hours they have possession of it already for a coast to coast flight. The wait to clear security at the busiest airports is already 2 hours, so to make sercurity tighter and have 100% hand inspection of carryon bags, we will need many more and more efficient screeners. Of course, if we could all fly naken with no luggage, we could cut probably the wait down to about ten minutes... but somehow I don't think this option would fly, either. No pun intended.

If you're using a well instead of municipal water, you're already taking your chances unless you're lucky enough to be tapped into a large aquifer that lies deep beneath a layer of impermeable rock. Again, nothing is free. If you want the benefits of a filtration plant, you'd better be prepared to pay for the expense of getting yourself connected to a public water system. Alternately, you could purchase and maintain a residential system to treat the supply from your own well. Or you could even clear out the garage and stockpile bottled water.
