You know this room looks pretty dead..... How about I stir the pot with this quote I came across:
'We have no acceptable theory of evolution at the present time. There is none; and I cannot accept the theory that I teach to my students each year. Let me explain. I teach the synthetic theory known as the neo-Darwinian one, for one reason only; not because it’s good, we know it is bad, but because there isn’t any other. Whilst waiting to find something better you are taught something which is known to be inexact, which is a first approximation…'
Professor Jerome Lejeune
From a French recording of internationally recognised geneticist, Professor Jerome Lejeune, at a lecture given in Paris on March 17, 1985. Translated by Peter Wilders of Monaco.
End quote.
Don't you just love controversy? (: HAHAHAHA (:

DUH! I cannot believe I've been watching Batman episodes over the past few days, and didn't pick out one of the most obvious voice actors: David frickin' Warner as R'as frickin' Al Ghul! My brother and I both loved the R'as Al Ghul episodes, and we both picked him out easily when we watched Gargoyles.
Kyp: I haven't read a Star Wars novel in a long time. I loved the Thrawn Trilogy, the Jedi Academy Trilogy, Darksaber, the Hand of Thrawn, The New Rebellion, and of course the anthology books. Those were perhaps my favorite (the character of Dannik Jerriko was amazing). I recently read Tales From the New Republic to try and remember why I liked reading the novels. Sadly, I don't feel that the latest batch has really done them justice. Whoever picked up the torch from Bantam Skylark, I find myself comparing them to the creative team behind the Goliath Chronicles (They killed Chewbacca? You do not kill Chewbacca! Who the hell do you think you are if you do kill Chewbacca?!). That, and I just am hesitant to touch anything relating in any way to the prequel travesty. Although I liked Darth Maul. They should have kept him around until Episode III.

Speaking of Micheal Reves, he's one of the STAR WARS writers. He wrote Darth Maul Shadow Hunter. And it's a really good novel.

Well, it turns out that Michael Reaves, the man who wrote the Gargoyles episode "Deadly Force," also wrote a Batman episode called "I Am The Night," in which Comissioner Gordon gets shot. The Gargoyles episode had a clear gun safety theme to it, which the Batman episode didn't have. But still, "I Am The Night" was fairly mature for a kid's cartoon. Batman spends most of the second act brooding, and questioning whether or not he really makes a difference. Does that remind anyone of a certain gargoyle leader? The Batman episode also didn't have blood, but we did see Gordon lying in a coma hooked up to machines.
Batman's world was, for a large part, populated by costumed rogues. But occasionally, they'd make a story extremely interesting. I'll have to check what other stories Michael Reaves was directly responsible for. I think he might have done "Heart of Ice." Mr. Freeze, with his motives and background, was very gray, like a Gargoyles villain.

Taleweaver: I love it! I'm only ninety percent certain I get the gist (but I'm also buzzed right now), but I still love it! I never say no to an excuse to express my opinions.
And I'm actually almost done with the first disc of Volume 2. Ironically, the last episode on it is "Night of the Ninja." I'll be paying close attention to Kyodai. Although of the two, I thought "Day of the Samurai" was better. But I like the parallel between the episode names. If we're dealing with Yin and Yang, then samurai and ninja, night and day are good comparisons.

Here's a thought to get conversations going. In the main comment room, there was a book club deal that wnt on where everyone agreed to comment on a certain episode during the week. Would that be something anyone would be interested in doing here?

Ooooo-kay. My computer is possessed again. The first time I clicked on "SUBMIT," I got a page which told me that the page could not be displayed. So I tried again and it looked like my screen froze. So I tried a third time and found out it worked the other two times. Not the first time my computer has done this to me. I'd say some defragging is long overdue.

I'd recommend The Cat & the Claw Pt. 1 & 2. You'll get a two-fer. Frank Welker and Kate Mulgrew who voiced Red Claw.
I don't see Batman as an antecedent to Gargoyles. I see it as a creative convergence. Like how different people can come to the same idea at the same time. As I understand things, Greg was already shopping the idea of Gargoyles around as Batman began airing. If anything, I'd say Ducktales is a more direct lineage for Gargoyles. It demonstrated to the Execs in Charge that they could syndicate a show and not go broke and that audiences were ready for more action oriented fare.

Gside: Happy birthday! And I'd like to expand on what Greg said and add: don't do anything I would do.
In many ways, I think Batman: the Animated Series was an early ancestor of Gargoyles. They did have a lot of people involved in both projects. Michael Reaves story-edited just about every Batman episode (at least on the first two DVD Volumes), and while I have to watch the title cards for each episode to tally writing and directing credits, I know Frank Paur directed a good number (something he might have mentioned in the commentary for "Awakening"). I can think of at least one Batman episode written by Eric Luke, but I'm sure there are more. As far as voice talent is concerned, I heard Derek Maza/Talon in one episode (forget the actor's name), Jeff Bennett in one (but there might be more), and Ed Asner in a few. He played a bad guy on Batman, though. Still, he did it well. I'll have to watch a Catwoman episode sometime and see if Frank Welker is credited with voicing her cat.

I picked up "Batman: The Animated Series Volume 2" today, and just finished watching a few of the episodes. I head Jeff Bennett's voice in the episode "Heart of Steel." It was pretty cool. He basically sounded just like Owen, if Owen were a machine (Imagine Owen with reverb added). I liked that episode; haven't seen that in about ten years. Despite the fact that we only got an inch of snow (although we did get freezing rain, but it was sunny on Sunday, so the ice on the roads melted), school's been canceled in Spotsylvania County for the last two days. So work today was extremely busy. But that means it was rewarding (ching!). Plus, I got to do something I've wanted to do for a while: listen to all five of the Police's studio albums in chronological order. It's interesting. Most bands progress gradually, but the changes in style between Police albums are very sudden. At least I thought so. Of course, they somehow always managed to incorporate the energy and rhythms of reggae and quasi-punk.
And Patrick, I understand how artists can be expected to progress as time goes on. I have eleven albums by Pink Floyd, and they all have strengths and weaknesses. But Sting today is just plain awful. Despite the fact that he wrote a majority of the songs, he needed Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland.
