So, was there any news about the comic or season 2 DVDs? That's all I'm looking for from the Gathering =)

Spen: I blame the Gathering for the slow CR week.

From what I've read so far, it sounds like Vegas was a lot of fun. Of course, I've only been there once, and that was in the company of minors, so I didn't really get to enjoy the city much. I will have to return someday.

So the Pre-Con dinner was at Tournament of Kings? Those are always fun. There's a Rennaissance Fair in Maryland every late summer/early fall that I enjoy going to every year. Of course, the last few years I've been somewhat negligent. I'll have to make another trip this year.

I know this is going to be wiped soon, but I havn't had a chance to make a decent sized post all week.

Gside : "Probably just the morbidity." That's probably why I like it. *evil grin*

Taleweaver : "I can't remember were Demona and Margot had speaking roles in the same episode." Hunter's Moon part 1.

To everyone at the gathering : Hope you have fun, wish I was there.

By the way, this has been the slowest week in CR history.

Well, you know what they say... what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Except for crabs. Those little bastards dig in and don't let go.

To those at the 2005 Gathering right now, I just have three words: ROCK AND ROLL.

Good morning from the Gathering! I'm sorry this is late, but it's been a tad busy here! You can be a part of it all (virtually) by logging on to http://conarchives.gargoyles-fans.org the new GATHERING CENTRAL. Use the FORUM, read attendee CON JOURNALS (as they have time to post them) and see their COPPERMINE PHOTOALBUMS. You may even get a glimpse of THOM'S PANTS (now available for auction!)

We miss you all!

Let's try this again.

Voice acting> Not to get down on Marina. She's a fine actress, but for voice acting chops I have to give top honors to Jeff Bennett and Keith David. Easiest way to prove it, they had mulitple characters in the same episode. I can't remember were Demona and Margot had speaking roles in the same episode. Where as Bennett often did double or triple duty. David had a higher bar to leap. His voice is so deep and so distinctive, any other character he voice instantly outs him. He has to put in a strong performance to make even a mild manner guy like officer Morgan not sound like Goliath sans the growl.

Yggdrasil> <<Due to health problems I will be unable to attend the Gathering this year>>: Heal well. And I was looking forward to the bio, too.

Spen> <<What's wrong with Harvester's name?>>: Probably just the morbidity.

HoE> <<your link doesn't seem to be working>>: He just hasn't been putting on the http:// needed to not point it at a subdirectory of s8.org
<<the reference to "Batman" (the 1989 Tim Burton movie)?>>: I haven't seen it, but my guess is that it has something to do with wonderful toys.

OCP: First of all, your link doesn't seem to be working. I've tried it on a few different posts and I keep getting a NOT FOUND message.

Second, my name is a reference to Blue Oyster Cult, a classic metal band, and one of the pioneers of (as Jeff is fond of saying) baroque and roll. "Harvester of Eyes" was the second song on the B Side of Blue Oyster Cult's masterpiece, 1974's "Secret Treaties." They're going to be in Falls Church (which is only 50 miles from me) in September, and I will probably be going to see them. Their following is mostly underground, so their venues almost always kick ass: affordable tickets, laid back atmosphere, and NO paying six dollars for a paisley little paper cup of beer. Much as I loved seeing Rush last year, the venue was absurdly corporate.

Third, I've actually never bothered to rank voices on Gargoyles. Keith David would definitely have to be Number One. Not only can he naturally emulate this magnificent rumbling growl, but his emotional range while doing so is equally magnificent. Then of course, he does an outstanding job of doing a 180 when he's portraying Thailog. But I think I get what you're saying. The first time you watched the show, you were more impressed by Demona than you are after some years have passed and you're looking back. Am I correct? If I am, I understand the feeling, I just don't think it applies to any character on Gargoyles. At least, none that I've found so far.

WARNING: BEGINNING OF "CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY" SPOILERS.

Perhaps the best thing this movie had going for it was its attempt to follow the book more closely than the 1971 Disney movie. And for the most part, it succeeded. They took a lot of dialogue out of the book, and a lot of the flashbacks were things told by characters in the book (such as Grandpa Joe relating the tale of Wonka and the Indian Prince). Even the lyrics to the Oompah Loompah's songs were the original lyrics written by Roald Dahl. One interesting thing Burton did was try to make the character of Wonka a little more complex. Like the Gene Wilder Willy Wonka, the Johnny Depp Wonka was an eccentric genius, but this time he had the dimension of being a character fighting personal demons. I would have to say that at times, the flashbacks to Wonka's childhood slowed the movie down, but at least Christopher Lee gave a good performance as the controlling father.

I've spoken to some people who say that they weren't too thrilled with Depp's performance, but I thought he did all right. I was watching him closely, and I noticed that he's very good at instantly changing his facial expression. And I honestly didn't find him too quirky. For the Willy Wonka that Tim Burton had in mind, he think he did well.

My brother says that he could only watch that movie if he could pretend that there wasn't already a movie made in 1971 with Gene Wilder. But I look at it this way: there's the Disney movie, which is still very enjoyable. And there's Tim Burton's movie, which is also enjoyable and is more faithful to Roald Dahl's story.

END SPOILERS.

By the way, if anyone here has seen this movie, did they catch the reference to "Batman" (the 1989 Tim Burton movie)?

Harvester of eyes: First let me say, your name disturbs me. Deeply. :)

I guess what struck me is not so much that Sirtis is BAD, but that I remember Demona as being the best voice on the show, maybe second only to Goliath, and I'm finding her much farther down the totem poll. It disappointed me. But by no means is she bad, just not what I remember. "Weakest link" was a little too harsh (I was tired :P).

I can't wait for gathering news!!!

Kathy> You're an apist too. You are just the Jill of All trades. Though on a more serious note, is there any danger those wasps might spread mites to your hive?

My Gathering plans are still in flux. If I arrive there it will be as much as surprise to me as to anyone else.

Hey folks,

I just wanted to let you know that CreatureComics.com is now up and running. I'm still in the thick of developing the page, but most of the sections are there. I'm hoping that throughout August I'll be able put some meat on the site's bones in terms of content - Gathering Reports, Guler sketches, and hopefully some business related news as well.

I've also put together a related Yahoo! Group that I'm hoping can kick off once people get back from the Gathering. If you want to sign up for that, you can find it at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/creaturecomics/

Thanks for your support!

OCP: <For whatever reason, I find everyone more or less conversing, among the major character's, but not Demona. Can't explain any better than that. It wasn't how I remembered it>

What exactly does that mean? I think I have an idea, but before I say anything, could you be a little more specific?

And I have to say that I really haven't found a weak voice on the show yet. I mean, David Warner impressed Greg so much in the episode "Long Way to Morning" that Greg started looking for an excuse (and thankfully found one) to bring the Archmage back.

And while we're talking about "Vows," I'd just like to say it contains perhaps one of Marina's finest moments. When speaking to her younger self in Act III, she says "do not share it [the Phoenix Gate] with..." and then pauses very briefly, corrects herself, and simply says "do not share it!" It seemed like she didn't want to mention Goliath because she knew that herself in 975 was still in love with him. But the inflection in Marina's voice always suggested to me that the underlying reason Demona didn't say his name was because it was too painful for her to think about what she had and lost. The pause and the change of tone were just magnificent. Weak voice acting? Definitely not.

DHP<Ignore the words, just listen to the contrast between the voices... In that dialog, you hear the difference between the two Demonas.>

I agree. It is an episode I've watched many times.

To explain why I find Demona to be one of the weaker voices, I first have to explain that I essentially only *listen* to Gargoyles, not watch. I put it on while working, and thus really can't watch. For whatever reason, I find everyone more or less conversing, among the major character's, but not Demona. Can't explain any better than that. It wasn't how I remembered it :(

I hope there will be some good news out of the Gathering! I'm dying for season 2 on DVD!!!! I'm sick of watching my recorded-from-tv-tracking-is-crappy copy.

Dezi > Ground nesting wasps are smaller than honeybees, black and yellow and meaner than snot. I was stung twice this morning, once on the ankle and once on the hand (after I got back to the house) and four of them followed me inside and upstairs. The devil of them is not only are they aggressive, but they can sting more than once because they don't have barbed stingers. (Though I did scrape a stinger out of my ankle like a bee leaves behind, strange.)

Anyway, I got my revenge. I went back, found the nest (it was underneath the hive stand to my beehives - I must have walked past it when I sugared the bees this morning)and sprayed them dead. No more nasty critters there.

Safe travels to all who are Gathering bound.

Either I like 7 or 7 seems to like me. And I'd rather not have anything to do with 7, seeing as how it 8 9 and all. *shudders*

And I too must pay my respects to James Doohan. Scotty has finally been beamed up. Thanks for all the laughter.
