It seems they're using images now. Don't tell me they've adapted.

*shoots spammer with his lightning gun and watches with dismay as the shot has no effect*

Yup, they've adapted.

Spen: It was a reference to Daniel Emmett's song "I Wish I Was In Dixie Land." I don't know why I'm doing this, seeing as how I make redneck jokes all the time (hey, I did spend 20-something years living in New England), but here's a link where you can find the lyrics.

So we're in the Greek alphabet for storms now? I hope this isn't a sign of some sort of conspiracy involving Unseelies. Honestly, I think it's just a bad year. We've had them before. Some years are just more active than others.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to find some weapon I haven't used yet (torture's out of the question, unfortunately; if Miss Tragedy Queen saw it, she'd recognize my work and know that I was still alive).

Harvester : "The irony of someone telling me to look away is great, since I live in Virginia." Eh? I don't get it.

Daniel Johnson : "whatever you do, don't say it three times!" Why not? Daniel Johnson Daniel Johnson Daniel Johnson.

I was looking at that one yesterday when they were thinking it might become a TS in 24 hours, and suddenly thought I should check for an update - and there it was.
Looks like it might hook up with Wilma after she crosses Florida, but probably not become a hurricane.

Lynati> [I'd agree overall, except for the "desensitization" point - since incest happens within families in which all members have presumably spent most of their lives living with each other.]

It's just a theory. Could be right, could be wrong, but it's got enough evidence backing it to have the support of a quite a few "experts."

It was a big problem is the Israeli kibbutz system. But then, the kibbutz system was a big problem in the Israeli ki butz system, so I guess that's not saying much.

Lexy - I believe "typo" is shorthand for "typographical error"

LW - I'm not sure what you are asking, is it if there was another show thematically similar to gargoyles would we like it as much as gargoyles? A show with an alternate history of gargoyles? Or a show that is inclusive of history in a fashion similar to what gargoyles did with "Macbeth"?
...which are all a bit moot anyway, since there's no way to tell how great, hard-hitting, or enjoyable we would find said show until after we watched it, and even then it's unlikely we would all have the same reaction.

Greg Weisman never comes here since this is a forum originating around a work of fanfiction, which he never reads for legal purposes. He occasionally visits the s8 comment room (http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/comment/index.php ). I'd say go to Ask Greg, only it has a two-year backlog of questions, and it's not currently accepting new ones. So s8 is your best bet, because those who do know how to contact him directly don't even share that information.
What are you trying to get ahold of Greg *for*, if I may ask? And have you already looked at the Ask Greg Archives to see if your question(s) have already been asked and answered before? http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/archives.php

Thanks again to everyone! So far... my tally indicates that most of you feel that, as long as everything is taken cautiously and the situation is clearly defined for the audience... that there shouldn't be a huge problem. I mean, honestly, there has to be SOME issues with this situation... or else it wouldn't be conflict to begin with. (and I do want it to be one!)

Spike- That's a really great idea! I think I WILL in fact do little research in that direction.

Spen- Good point about the time period thing. It's a fantasy story... so I can't give an exact date really. But if I had to compare it to our timeline IRL, I'd say it has the setting of (no later than) the 1500's. So ... um... yeah. People were betrothed early, sent off to marry random people, or stuck with cousins ALL THE TIME. This character in particular, lives in a culture where betrothals and such aren't really weird at all. So knowing someone at a young age and up isn't the issue for him. It's just getting the roles in his mind worked out. She was very much 'like' a little sister for a while. Even though it was short lived... it still means something to him. So he's very iffy ... very VERY ..ok he runs off for years doing other things to escape her... essentially. Course... this is only ONE reason he leaves home. The rest would take do darn long to explain. But thanks for the point!

Luminous- If you would like, you can be one of my test subjects *grins* I've actually been writing this comic of mine for 6 years now. I've got most of the main cast designed (by some very competent artists... IE: NOT ME) and I've got somewhere around 700 pages of script bits and thoughts on my computer. So... sure! If you like. I can send you stuff. Actually. I AM hoping, and planning, on publishing this work. Thus, the whole polling thing. I just want to know... you know... just for kicks. My husband doesn't like this situation with Mari AT ALL. I personally never thought it was an issue until he started making a stink about it. SO.... I thought I'd test the waters is all:)

Lexy consider Robert Heinlein's books about Lazarus Long. He has father/daughter, mother/son, and even Lazarus with his clones made into female/daughters. He has done this back when it wasn't fashionable and managed to pull it off rather well. Do what works for you and your story.

Lexy>> Actually, the concept of unrelated 'siblings' falling in love is a fairly common theme. One of the better done versions that I've read was in _The Confession of Brother Haluin_ by Ellis Peters. If you have any doubts on how this plot device will work for you, I'd suggest reading up on how other authors have done it and how their stories were recieved.

But I don't see a problem because they are no related and you are exploring the issues he has with the 'but you were like my sister' kinda thing. If they both jumped into the relationship feet first it would be a little worrisome. That not being the case it shouldn't nag peoples consciences too much. I'd like to read this story...or at least a teaser for it or something...Would that be possible at some point?

Lexy : Welcome back! "It's been a really long time since I posted here" *checks archives* Yeah, your last post was in December.
As for the survey: I'd probably agree with the majority here, and give it a one, two at most. After all, they aren't actually related, they only knew each other a few years before, etc, etc, etc. Another thing that I don't think anyone else has covered is that it is *not* in modern times. Now, I don't know what time period this is, but Henry VIII tried to get a dispension to allow his illigetimate son to marry his legitamate daughter. If that can be allowed, I see no problem with this situation. (BTW, this reminds me a bit of Boone and Shannon from "Lost") Also, my list of sexual no-nos runs like this: One - rape, two - child molestation, three - cheating on spouses. Incest is pretty far down the list. (Heck, I didn't even have much of a problem with Jerk-o and Demona (well, I probably would have had a problem with that in real life, but that's besides the point.)) And, I've always been of the opinian that with fictitional characters they can do whatever their creator wants them to do. Heck, I don't even mind if a character is raped over the course of a story. After all, when it's all said and done, it's just a story, and no real people are harmed by it.
"after speaking with some people in person on this topic I'm surprised at just how freaked out most people are of the proposed situation." Were you talking to Pistoff about it?

Todd : Ah, thanks for clairifying that. It just seemed to be too much of a coincedince. Two people with the same name, both are grandfathers of Merlin, and both are former rulers.

To everyone in general- Thank you so much for all your feedback! I'm keeping a record of all your answers. So as many answers as possible would be great!!

Luminous Aphrodite- Actually, that is exactly the case. The female is more like, "Ok... I barely remember you, and now we meet again and... well whatever." While the male is the one who is like, "Yeah... but... I mean. I still remember the day you were born in my house!"

It's a really WEIRD situation... in which he basically feels like there's suddenly TWO different versions of this girl, and he's not really sure which version he should stick with. At least... that's how the story is set now. I personally WANTED there to be this hang up between them and the other characters... but after speaking with some people in person on this topic I'm surprised at just how freaked out most people are of the proposed situation. No matter HOW I explain, "Yeah.. but they're not related... or Yeah but they barely spent any time together... nope. It still really bothers people. So I may just have to change the story a bit. I REALLY hate to do that... especially since this has been the case for over six years now... but.. well what can I do? If I want it to be consumable I guess I have to listen to the public.

So please continue to send me your comments!!! I really, really appreciate it!

Lexy: I would say "1" because they're stepsiblings. There's no common blood, and they're roughly the same age. For me, it's only if they have something in common. Well, more common than most other humans, since the DNA of every living thing is roughly the same. Unless I'm mistaken, it's only about 10 percent of the nucleotides on our genome that make us what we are. Now I'm getting too technical, but I think everyone here knows what I mean. If they were half siblings, then I'd put it up around 7 or 8. But that's only because I have some half siblings myself, and don't like to think of them as such. I think of them as my sister and brother.

While we're on the topic, I always wondered how Luke felt after that scene in "Return of the Jedi" where he had that revelation. I'm wondering if his mind went back to that scene in "Empire Strikes Back." Even if he didn't know back then what he knew in "Jedi," it's still kind of gross.

But as two consenting adults who may be like brother and sister they are still not so I'd say a 2 because I'm sure in the backs of their minds it probably feels slightly incestous, but very slight.

Lexy Lund:...was thinking bout your story characters...and the possible issue of 'incest'...which it is not because they are not related...but I think it'd be cool if you worked in the angle that say the brother only thought of her as a sister...or at least in the beginning he does, after he realizes she's jonesing for him. Because he did see her grow up...from a baby to like a seven year old...maybe he has a few issues wrapping his mind around it? Just a thought. It seems if the girl's not going to have an issue with it, the likelihood of the boy having some issue with it is increased. (Perhaps one of his friends or someone tries to make a pass at his sister and he realizes he's jealous?) Just tossing out ideas.
I'd give it a six on the 'iffy' scale. Not related=not incest but there should at least be a few mental hangups there.

SPEN - Actually, the "Avallach" part is a coincidence. When we were working on the backstory for the Unseelie Wars, I needed a name for Oberon and Madoc's father and decided on "Avallach" because of its close similarity to "Avalon". I certainly wasn't thinking of Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle at the time, even though I've read it - and I'm certain that I'd have come up with the same name even if I hadn't read it.

HARVESTER - I'm looking forward to your reviews. I sometimes wonder whether they could help rejuvenate the TGS comment room a little (msybe not by that much, since almost everyone else here will have either long ago read the "Pendragon" stories in question, or else never bothered reading "Pendragon" to begin with).

Rightsider: I'd agree overall, except for the "desensitization" point - since incest happens within families in which all members have presumably spent most of their lives living with each other.

I don't see a problem with that sort of thing, since they aren't blood-related, but I could see why both some of the audience and even characters within the story might be unnerved by it. I've got a character who has a half-sister on her mother's side and a half brother on her father's side who wind up a couple, it bothers *her* to no end despite the fact that neither are blood relatives to the other. To her, they are still both her siblings.

And then you step into the bounds of the gargoyles world, where traditionally all of a generation are raised as brothers and sisters. Somewhere along the way, pairs form that break the bounds of (typically human defined) brother/sister relations- but obviously the clan doesn't consider that "incest".

I take that back. Wilma has ALREADY shot up to become a Category 5 Hurricane, and is presently the most powerful hurricane of 2005 (in terms of its pressure, which is 892 MB.) It currently also has 175 MPH winds.
Here is a current forecast track:

Lexy Lund> I give it an even 5. They're not related, so incest is not really an issue. On the other hand, the daughter should theoretically be desensitized to the son, since she was around him almost from birth and grew up thinking of his as a brother.

According to Edward Westmarck, if two people live in close proximity for the first 30 months in the life of either one, they become desensitized to later close sexual attraction.

Or at least that's what Wikipedia says.

There's also the "ick" factor. People will think of them as related, even if they aren't blood relatives. While not incest, their relationship will still cause the people who know them to react unfavorably.

PLEASE TAKE PART IN MY WEIRD SURVEY!!!!! :)

Wow!! It's been a really long time since I posted here... or anywhere else for that matter.

So anyway, I'm looking for some sound advice on a snag I ran into in designing a character. W/o wasting anyone's precious time, here's the situation/question:

BTW: This isn’t a modern setting!!
A female character's mother dies giving birth to her, and her father runs off for a while dealing with grief issues. Thus, the baby girl is left to be raised with his wife's best friend. This woman already has children of her own, so she seems like the right person for the job at the time. One of her children is a son who is six years old at the time. The baby girl is raised in the household until she's around seven years of age. During this time, the son of the neighbor woman lives in this home until he is 10 or 11'ish. He is taken away early to join an apprenticeship. So they are raised in the same household for between 4 to 5 years. Everyone KNOWS they're not related. OK. So the son leaves the home at this young age, and the daughter leaves at the age of 7 or so to get raised by (her now not so freaked out) father. The two meet up again later in life (in their late teens to twenties) and the girl is attracted to the boy... er.. um.. the woman to the man. Anyway...

I need everyone's honest opinion on this. So... On a scale of 1 to 10... 1 being, "Eh, who cares. They're not related right? So ... um whatever" and 10 being "EWW INCEST CITY!!" where do you all stand??

Weird survey question... I know. But please PLEASE let me know.

Thanks!

Harvester : The Rene/Satan thing. Well, I don't know as much about the incident as some other people here might know, but I've figuerd out the basics from the archive. Apperantly, Rene/Satan was an idividual who posted under two differant names, had a tendency to post in all caps, and spent his/her time insulting Brooklyn and his "estrogen brigade". Rene/Satan also has the dubious honor of being the first person to be banned from the CR.

Spacebabie: My magnum also has plenty of rounds left. Of course, stopping the Balrog is another matter.

Spen: Boomsticks could do a lot of damage, if used properly. I'd say that would help a great deal. Shop smart, shop S Mart. YA GOT THAT?!

Lady Mystic: I'd leave the text color error in. It makes it sound much more cooler. Like a rogue Final Fantasy villain or something.

And you know it's a slow week in the CR when people obsess over the Top Ten review. I was prepared to simply satisfy the primodial nub inside my cerebrum by correcting Cat, but it's interesting to see what's come of that.

Oh, and can anyone tell me more about this Rene/Satan business that got mentioned last week? I'm intrigued, especially after reading the archives for the week that Doug's secret inadvertantly "came out" (well, not literally, but in a way).

Todd: More comments coming soon. I haven't been able to devote as much time as I'd like to lately to reading. But I have finished "Home For the Holidays" and plan on posting for both that and "Out of the Frying Pan" in one shot.

While I'm on the subject, I too might also have to eventually write some TGS Summaries. I'll make a list as soon as I get the chance.

In other news... Wilma should be a Category 4 in 24 hours, and will probably become a Category 5 before it hits land. It should, however, go through the same sort of weakening process before running into Florida that Rita did before it hit Texas.

Still, could be scary : /

Silvadel : "there hasnt been a timedancer or main series season in a very very long time" There hasn't been a "Dark Ages" ep in even longer.

Spacebabie : "Naw we are armed with shovels, cricket bats, baseball bats and boomsticks." And how exactly will that help?

Lady Mystic : I noticed an error in the text color page. Dark Magenta is spelled "Dark Magent".

Guandalug : I was looking through some of the more recent archives earlier, and I was wondering, is the offer still open on a page for TGS synopsises and reviews? If so, when my e-mail is working properly again, could I submit a few?

Todd : I was wondering, did you name Oberon's predesseser to the throne of Avalon 'Avallach' due to the fact that in "The Pendragon Cycle", Avallach was the name of Merlin's grandfather?

#2 = Dezi
#3 = silvadel
#4 = Luminous Aphrodite
#5 = Lynati
#6 = Jacob
#7 = Starsinger
#8 = Spacebabie

That's the list of all the people who posted before me this week.

Some of you may have noticed I had a change in ip addresses. At home, I'm temporarily using aoh for a two-fold reason: over the weekend, my old pc died and I have to replace the power supply; I bought a cheap new pc to get me by with but I haven't been able to successfully login with my isp. So I activated aoh so I can get online at home. I'm also in the process of adding software to it. I haven't given it a name yet. More to come

Well I’m preparing for the big move. Cleaning up crap, stuffing more crap into boxes and downloading even more crap to discs.

I have filled three of the boxes with books and I haven’t even started to pack my paperback novels. I read too much. I’m also taking some of my old text books wich include my Shakespeare collection and my first aid book.

I already know I’m going to need some more discs and some sealing tape.

Replies:

Tribun>>>A few years ago Lynati wondered why we were not as posting as much as we used to. Greg said it was because we all had LJ’s…which earned a few feh’s from Gside and Josh<<<Eh, is it now allowed to make here advertisement if writing a Fanfic saga?>>> I don’t think there was ever a rule against it. Back at th beginning of the CR people pimped their fics here.

Gside<<<Let's try and groove together.>>>Lets bust a groove!

Harvester<<<Unless you meant the other kind of zombies>>>Besides the band there are two others. There are the reanimated corpses that Hollywood seems to love and then there the traditional “Serpent and the Rainbow” types. I want both.

Spen<<<We've had enough problems with undead in the past few weeks.>>> Naw we are armed with shovels, cricket bats, baseball bats and boomsticks. <<<am I the only person here who *doesn't* have an LJ>>>Neither does Gside or Josh.

Dezi>>> Jensen Ackles. He’s hot.

LA<<<Saw half ep when it was aired on FOX.>>>I think I only posted a few spoilers.<<<My Bro-in-law recently gave us the entire series on DVD and my husband and I have watched it religiously (all the way through almost twice)>>>Naked Mal is worth seeing several times.<<<But I also think Joss Whedon is awesome for writing character deaths. I have A LOT of respect for people that kill off characters that fans love>>> Joss is evil like that. So is Cyrway

Silvadel<<<there hasnt been a timedancer or main series season in a very very long time>>>That may be part of the reason. It wont bring back many of the old regs, just those who post comments on the series.<<<becomes a tropical storm as predicted will actually have the name Tropical Storm Alpha>>> This is why they need to come up with a few X Y and Z names.

Jacob<<<Wilma does not yet exist - the storm that will become "Wilma" it she gets big enough is still called Tropical Depression Twenty-Four and is hanging out straight south of Florida, moving west, and can be seen here>>> Ah there is Wilma.

This is probably going to be my last CR comment via the main computer, futures postswill be made on Zelgadis and Pippen.

As an update, Tropical Depression Twenty-Four experienced a "tremendous burst of deep convection" in the past 6 hours and has become Tropical Storm Wilma. It is expected to strengthen into a hurricane between 60 and 120 hours from now, and looks as if it might make landfall in the US (although its track is still erratic).
