It's true about the body. The story appeared in the Albuquerque Journal in one of those footnote short news spots they have. It happened in Delaware and I've dumped the paper or I'd look it up for what town. Just remember most people were probably driving by and didn't get more than a glimse of something/one hanging from where she hung herself. Besides, most people only see what they want, and it being Halloween, they saw a decoration not a real body.

*dph enters the cr, holding an archaic book, describing some of the events preceding the end of times. He enters reading a translation of the selection:
"It came to pass that in a language not yet invented there shall come a man whose name shall be the composed of, in this order, the 4th, 16th, and 8th letters of the alphabet of that language. He shall not grow up having a good relationship with his father. If he suceeds in mending bridges and comes to trust his father, let the reader of this passage beware. The mending of that relationship shall start the downfall of a civilization. That downfall shall lead to brother fighting sister and sister fighting against brother and mother against father and father against mother and the offspring of parents fighting against the parents."*

Who knew that was written in a book? *sees a few hands raise from bodies in the deepest, darkest corners of the cr*

Yesterday, the moron couldn't leave well-enough alone. Around 4 pm I was getting ready to take a nap and he had to bother me. Nevermind that he didn't ask what time I got up (5:30am) or what time I went to bed the previous night (11:30pm). Then the moron leaves the house with the front door unlocked.

Then today happenned. On my way home, after visiting the post office, I accidently backed into a bumper and broke the cover surrounding the driver side rear light bulbs. And now I'm afraid of telling the moron for fear of getting a lecture or worse.

Too many secrets I have.

Well, folks, after a year and a half, I've posted a new fanfic! "Only the Good, Part One" is now on my site. But do be warned, I won't be able to finish and post Part Two until probably after the first of the year, because I'm starting NaNoWriMo next week. This one's a killer! I don't think it ends on TOO unbearable a cliffhanger ... but then again, I'm a sadistic meanie who loves to hear people scream. Ok so I'm browsing cnn.com to check out this Beta, (does sound like a video format hehe) and anyways, there's a story about Bush, a story about a cat that wound up in France..And then one about Sulu coming out of the closet. It just seemed...odd, to have it be one of the top stories. Was there ever a stigma, or anything, beyond the stigma of the times on the set of Star Trek?

There are all kinds of noise ordinances on the books. As someone who has had the priveledge of listening to someone else's dubious choice of music at 3 am in the morning, I'm all for them. I also can't stand boombox cars or neighbor's who party all night and every night. There is nothing worse than waiting for the bus and competing boomers parked right in front of you. If the noise is rough enough, it will trigger my asthma from the stress. Not fun.

Aside from the fact you were on the highway, they shoudn't have stopped you. Welcome back Jackel.

Replying to Spen's interesting, but apparently ignored, top five topic earlier this week.

Gargoyles
Hard, this one. Season One was the best by far but there were lots of problematic aspects in its direction -- and to be quite honest, it's been eight years since I've read some of the stories and the specifics are lost on me. Season Two was interesting but generally rather misguided I felt. Season Three was getting some of the right ideas, but never built up the momentum.

"Consequences" -- A huge, amazing turning point.
"Reprise" -- Gangbuster finale, incredibly satisfying
"The Rising" -- Wonderful opener, though not really a 'Gargoyles' story.
"The Scottish Play" -- Well conceived and very powerful.
"Transitions" -- Emotion. Crisp writing too.

Dark Ages
This is even harder. I liked the first season fine, and the second season even better. But again, memory fails me...

"Prince of Thieves" -- badly edited, but very entertaining
"The Fox Came Back" -- Hilarious
"Coming of Age" -- Exciting
"Nowhere to Run"/"Nowhere to Hide" -- Compelling
"The Adopted" -- Memorable

Timedancer
Not a TD fan, but Season Two was something else. Every story was superb, with big ideas, big emotions, great writing and big consequences. Before, it was pretty bland, and afterwards it imploded. But who could forget:

"The Sun and the Serpent" -- TD's answer to "City of Stone". Epic.
"Menagerie" -- Superbly written and characterised, perfect.
"Spirits from the Vasty Deep" -- Lovely to get Morgana in there
"The Downfall" -- A great story, well told.
"Crossroads" -- Emotional rollercoaster: what a tearjerker ending!

Pendragon
Hardest for me since I worked on the fourth season. Season 1's flashback stories were entertaining but lightweight, but the later stages of the season struggled to find credibility. Season 2 had nice ideas but had no real way of expressing them because of the clutter of the storyline. Season 3 was where things really took off -- fantastic

Out of seasons 1-3:
"Quest's End" -- An extremely satisfying resolution to an otherwise mixed first season.
"Beginning Again" -- Hilarious.
"The Curse of Rivencroft" -- A great new character, and wonderful story to boot.
"Iris, Lily and Rose" -- Grand thriller.
"The Once and Future King" -- Stunning finale to a spectacular idea.

Out of Season Four, my favourites would probably be "The Dragon's Treasure", "Doomed", "Flight from the Enchanter", "No Mercy" and "Carbonek" -- but I'm not nearly unbiased enough to be capable of merging the s1-3 and s4 lists. ;)

i wanted to share a stupid little story with yall...
this past June, mid month, i was driving down a state hwy, just me by myself... perfect day, temps in the low seventies, prolly three clouds in sky (if that), windows down, smokin a cig, listenin to lords of acid. i see blue lights flashin behind me. so i pull over to let this fine officer of the law pass me. well, he pulls up behind me.. what the deuce? i wasn't speeding, my tag is up to date... i wonder? quick nonchalant glance around the car... nothing illegal. i look in the side mirror and see the most obese man i've ever had the displeasure of laying eyes on, ya know aside from those guys on Jerry Springer, ya know the ones i mean.
"how in the name of all that is holy, is this guy a police officer?" i wonder, but i smile and remain very pleasant
"i pulled you over cause your radio's too loud." my smile slowly fades... "my what?"
as it turned out, i'm on twelve months probation. i mean, my car stereo isn't amplified in any way, granted my windows were down but geezz. i have this thing poppin out of my head (kinda like that kid in Fooly Cooly) yeah, it's a neon sign that says, "Heeerree's JackaL, screw him over!"

HARVESTER - Yes, that was part of it. It was actually inspired by the fact that I'd given Mary's mother the name of Fiona in Season Three, and then discovered about Fiona Canmore in "The Last". I couldn't resist the possibility of a connection between the two and therefore made Fiona Canmore the grandmother of Fiona Sefton and Mary's great-grandmother. Fortunately, Mary hasn't taken after her relatives in their attitude towards gargoyles (probably due to the fact that the Hunt was being passed down to Jason, Robyn, and Jon and nobody was expecting that Mary's branch of the family would ever need to be brought into it - though there is that scene in "Choices" where Mary remembers visiting her great-grandmother in Paris and hearing stories about Demona there - probably the events of "Hungry Shadows", though I suspect that Fiona Canmore toned them down since Mary was only nine years old or so at the time).

Todd: I did catch that. Had I not read "Hungry Shadows," I don't know if I'd have made that connection concerning Nigel's in-laws. I like the way it makes use of a device that's used quite often in the canonical Gargoyles universe: there are very few degrees of separation between characters, even ones that don't have recurring roles.

ED - Thanks for those comments. I still think it's a pity that we never got to do that fifth season and make Jennifer into a regular.

A few bits in "Home for the Holidays" that I particularly had fun writing:

Perry getting indignant when Arthur inadvertently lets the Christmas cookies burn (and, yes, that was a deliberate reference to a legend about another famous British king).

Michael talking about Mary being an "alleged werewolf" (since she's only in her wolf-form while it's daytime and the gargoyles are in their stone sleep, they naturally would have to take the humans' word for her transformations).

Merlin and Mary's Christmas gifts to each other (I see Mary's locket as being almost a gender-reversed version of the "lady's favor" that an Arthurian knight would often bear on his quests - even though Mary's still only a squire).

Merlin's response to seeing the usually very tomboyish Mary wearing a dress.

Merlin and Mary reading Tennyson's "Idylls of the King" together.

Their kiss beneath the mistletoe.

I wonder, incidentally, Harvester, if you noticed that bit about the identity of a few cousins of Mary's on her mother's side - cousins whom Nigel wouldn't be too happy about acknowledging as family, even as in-laws.

Cheers for the new reviews, Harvester.

I liked "Home for the Holidays" too and greatly admired the work Todd did on it. My scenes were pretty short and were added on later in the season when we were cleaning things up. At this point, we were strongly considering making Jennifer Camford a fifth regular castmember in Season Five and were looking to beef up her role a bit.

"Out of the Frying Pan" was a favourite of mine which in hindsight suffered from coming too soon after "Eynhallow", which had a pretty similar concept. It was an addition to the original season plan to do this story, basically because we felt Griff had been underused in these early stories, perhaps because Todd felt more of a natural affinity for the characters of Mary and Merlin. I also wanted to use a character from Arthurian literature. I'm not sure Bercilak's trial of Griff is really a satisfactory parallel for his trial of Gawain; I found Griff a difficult person to find layers in (only by the finale was I really happy in his character growth), and in the end it was more of an action/comedy story than any serious dissection of the moral obligations of a knight. But we knew we were going to return to the same theme in later, more serious, episodes, and I had a lot of fun with this anyway.

Besides, the title sounds intriguing as hell.

HARVESTER - Thanks for your reviews. "Home for the Holidays" is one that I'm fond of, though I needed a little help from Ed Reynolds in handling Arthur and Jennifer's scenes. We did a fair amount of co-writing at times, in fact, particularly with the series finale. And he was better at getting inside Arthur and Jennifer's heads than I was. (On a side-note, we had originally considered having the episode cover the Christmas activities of more of the cast, including the London clan's winter solstice celebrations, but wound up focusing it on Merlin and Mary spending Christmas at Nigel's house and Arthur and Jennifer spending Christmas at the London estate.)

Part of the purpose of the Merlin-Morgana scene that you mentioned, by the way, was for damage control. When the early episodes of Season Four "aired", there was a fair amount of argument in here about Morgana's feud with Merlin, in which a lot of people were viewing Merlin as a cold-hearted person for helping to wreck Morgana's life through bringing about the conception of Arthur, and doing nothing to make amends for it to her in turn. The truth was, that had simply slipped past us during the first three seasons of "Pendragon", but I realized that what it meant was that the readers were seeing Merlin in a very different light than I had conceived him as being, which was a sign that something was very wrong. His apology to Morgana was thereby intended as a means of shifting, or attempting to shift, the audience's perception of Merlin back to how I (and presumably other members of the TGS staff) saw him. On the side, though, there is one difficulty with Merlin's apology to Morgana; the reason why he had helped participate in the destruction of Morgana's family was to bring about Arthur's conception and thereby his reign. So it can be argued that, so long as Merlin continues to support Arthur, accompany him, advise him, he cannot be considered truly repentant of his past deeds (cf. the scene in "Hamlet" where Claudius confesses to himself that he can't truly repent, at this point, for murdering his brother, since he still has the things that he committed the murder to gain: being married to Gertrude and being King of Denmark).

Of course, since "Out of the Frying-Pan" was a story which Ed both came up with and wrote down, he's far better qualified to discuss it than I am.

(On the side, I'm a bit puzzled about the mention of a discussion of "Fata Morgana" in here a few weeks ago - I honestly don't recall such a thing taking place that recently. It might help if you could remember the specific week that it took place so that I could have some idea as to just where to look for it in the archives.)

Don't have a list yet. I'll make one in the near future, but first I've got some long-overdue comments for Todd and Ed.

Regarding "Home for the Holidays," I actually like stories in this vein if they're well written (I've enjoyed reading and rereading "A Mid-Winter's Tale" in Season One of Gargoyles). The thing I liked most about this story is that it demonstrated how much Mary's character has developed. I really didn't care too much for her when her character was first introduced, but the logical arguments she was giving her father really made me take notice on how spending time with Arthur and his knights has had an effect on her. It was also good to finally see something really start to develop between Arthur and Jennifer. Speaking of which, Arthur and Jennifer's meeting at the Savoy reminded me of something I should have picked up on, back when we were discussing how characters of Arthurian legend would respond to some of the films that have been made. "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" just went right over my head. I LOVED Arthur's reaction to Jennifer's little quip. It also got me thinking how Arthur might have reacted to individual scenes, such as the scene where Graham Chapman is chatting with the two peasants gathering filth (or fighting the Black Knight, for that matter). I also liked the scene between Merlin, Mary, and Morgana. I didn't find it as emotionally stirring as the scene between Mary and Morgana back at the start of Season 4, but still, it should be interesting to see where this leads.

*takes a little break to go watch "Aqua Teen Hunger Force."*

Okay, I'm back. "Out of the Frying Pan" had a quality about it that reminded me of "Future Tense": I should have felt cheated at the end of it, but I didn't. Instead, it made for an interesting ride. Perhaps it was due to what we know so far about the knights who quested for the Grail. I was able to guess that something was up when Griff first met "Brianna" after exiting the cave, and her dialogue started to take on a borderline-Demona quality. From there, it got even more engaging. I like to think it also helped that I was giving Bercilak Christopher Plummer's voice. Don't know, it just seemed to fit.

Anyway, I'm quitting one of my jobs in the near future, to pick up more hours at the other. I hope when that happens, I'll be able to catch up on my reading. I at least want to make it to "Fata Morgana" soon. Judging by the conversation in here a few weeks ago, that one sounds really interesting.

*walks in, munching on the cake* It's delicious by the way.

The Top Ten : Hey, it's rather fun, it ensures that there will be at least ten posts on Monday, and those of us with *way* too much free time on our hands, (ie: me) like to keep detailed records of the results. Plus, it's a sacred and honored tradition. However, when the entire discussion is about the results, I belive that we are extremly bored.

This topic livned up S8 last week, so let's see if it works here. Top Five favorite TGS episodes anyone?

Please note, that multi-parters *do* count here, and if you can't think of five favorite ones *period* you can divid them into seperate series. Here are mine:

"Gargoyles" : "Mutual Trust", "Reprisals", "The Rising", "Offers", "Hazards".

Honorable mentions : "Equality", "Turncoat", "Consequenses", "Things Fall Apart", "Past Perfect", "The Scottish Play", "When the Bough Breaks", "The Darkest Hour", "Re-emergence", "Thicker Than Blood", "Unions".

"Pendragon" : "The Goddess of Winter", "The Watching Eye", "Triangles", "The Curse of Rivencroft", "Carbonek".

Honorable mentions : "The Ill-made Knight", "Quest's End", "Beginning Again", "My Lady Fair", "Night of the Weird", "Iris, Lily, and Rose", "Out of the Blue", "Choices", "Fata Morgana", "Flight From the Enchanter", "No Mercy", Someone to Watch Over Me".

"Dark Ages" : "Prince of Thieves", Coming of Age", "Conerstone", "Nowhere to Run/Nowhere to Hide", Second in Command".

Honorable mentions : "Wanderer", "Dreadnought", "The Seduction", "Alliances", "Pespectives", "Dragon's Stone", "Serendipity".

"Timedancer" : "Requiem", "The Promise", The Sun and the Serpent", "The Downfall", "Two Roads Diverged".

Honorable mentions : "For Old Times' Sake", "Dishonor", "Spirits From the Vastly Deeps", "Menagerie", "Crossroads", "Twilight Falls", "Deals and Exchanges", "I am Become Death", "Ruby Eyes", "The Evil That Men Do".

"Untold Tales" : Like there's actually a choice. "Hungry Shadows".

It's that fundamental human instinct that distinguishes us from brute animals... the perpetual drive to be top dog in the pissing competition. Okay, so not so much 'distinguishes'...

12th!

Nothing wrong with the Top Ten, I just think it's being taken way too seriously.

I've got to side with Bishansky on this one. I honestly wonder what's the point of the Top Ten sometimes (particularly since I honestly don't find it that stimulating). I can't help but seeing it as one of those traditions that has gone on for so long that nobody can remember the point to it, or even one where the original reason has become moot (kind of like the story of the congregation in a certain church that always bowed low when they passed a certain spot - it turned out that the reason why they did so was that there had once been a low-lying beam jutting out there and they were ducking to keep from bumping their heads against it, but they kept on doing it out of force of habit even after the beam was removed).

It proves we can count BIG numbers. We're bored. We are looking for balance in the universe. It lures us back to see who we beat.

Any other suggestions?

It's only the Top Ten? Why do we care about keeping score?
