HARVESTER - Thanks for your comments. One part that stands out to me is what you said about the anti-gargoyle hate groups in your remarks on "Consequences" and "Things Fall Apart".

Truth to tell, I'm iffy about bringing back Phoenix Rising, simply because we weren't able to find anything that made it feel like more than just an understudy to the Quarrymen. The Quarrymen had an effective set-up, with Castaway being motivated by his actions as Jon Canmore in "Hunter's Moon" (particularly shooting Jason and being unable to take responsibility for it) and the bulk of his followers being people who'd just had a nasty shock in discovering that gargoyles were real, and seemingly menacing their home city. We had nothing like that with Phoenix Rising; they felt too much like pale imitations without any of Castaway's complexity.

Having anti-gargoyle hate groups around is going to be a challenge after the public discovers that the gargoyles are protectors (a revelation that we had in "Turncoat" - maybe too early, but we felt that we needed to have the general population of New York find out the truth about the gargoyles soon enough after "Hunter's Moon" to keep them from getting so used to their original view of them that they'd get hardened in their opinions). Once you discover that the gargoyles are focused on rescuing humans from criminals and natural disasters, that means that by going after them and killing them, you'd be endangering the lives of your fellow citizens by depriving them of gargoyle protection. Say that your organization kills a couple of gargoyles. How many humans after that will be robbed and killed by criminals, who would have lived if those gargoyles that you'd killed had been still alive and had come to the rescue? And how do you justify your hatred of gargoyles after that? The people in those hate groups who are criminals will probably have it easiest - if anything, finding out that the gargoyles are crime-fighters will make them all the more eager to get rid of them - and (thanks to the influence of "The Goliath Chronicles") we had found ourselves all too often imagining the bulk of the Quarrymen in that light (with an occasional well-intentioned exception such as Richard Harrison), but then it's no longer about hate groups or prejudice or racial persecution. It's now criminals trying to get rid of do-gooders, no more about xenophobia than the criminals in Gotham City teaming up to get rid of Batman or the criminals in Metropolis teaming up to get rid of Superman. (If there were more villainous gargoyles like Demona and Thailog, or isolationist gargoyles like Leo and Una at the start of "M.I.A." around, that wouldn't be as much of a problem; then we could show the Quarrymen going after all gargoyles regardless of whether they believe in protecting humans or not.)

This is a little late, but here's my Top Five TGS episodes from the main Gargoyles series, in no particular order:

"Consequences": Free will... it is a bitch! I was a little disappointed that the Quarrymen seemed to be gone so soon (since I'm in the same camp as Greg on this one; as the Nazis and the KKK have shown, hate groups just don't die). In addition to getting our first clue that Maddix might be something more than a dapper gent (we already knew that something was going on with him, but here I think was the first hint that he and Mavis might actually be more than human), we also get to know George Harrison a bit better. A lot of his scenes between him and the gargoyles were particularly chilling. Castaway might be out of the picture, but the clan's still got a powerful detractor. Not only that, but there's a wonderful characteristic about him that most people could relate to: he prides himself upon freedom, in particular, freedom of choice. Despite the fact that his power has given him the freedom to do more, he's still enslaved. Granted, the sense of character we got from him here made his reason for hating the gargoyles (as revealed in "Hazards") seem a little stupid, but for now, we get a fantastic sense of why Madoc recruited him. And of course, those same qualites that Madoc admired wind up striking a crippling blow to his army (it's eerie, because it's like what Elisa told Goliath in "The Edge": "what goes around comes around." Doesn't happen often enough in real life).

"Reprisals": I too would have to say that the first season finished very strongly. Lots of good stuff in here. I knew when I started reading that Maddox was probably of the Third Race Everything we'd read so far pointed to that. But the story still managed to surprise me when we learned just who exactly he was (though that story wasn't told until "The Rising," we did hear from him that he was NOT one of Oberon's Children). Other high points include Goliath finally having it out with Owen (I especially liked Hudson's reaction when he heard about Goliath's vision), and that little scene with Angela in Part III. So she might not ever be able to see humans the same way as her lovable bitch of a mother (and I use the term with nothing but respect), but she did inherit SOMETHING from her. Great way to cap off the season. Kudos to Christine on that one.

"When the Bough Breaks": Great story that developed several characters who had become in danger of being overlooked. Especially liked the little twist at the end, and the moment between the two brothers. Also liked that we got to know Unbriel a bit better. Made his fate that much more sad.

"In the Blood": Nice bit of resolution on something I'd been waiting to hear more about. Shame about Riggs, but that's war for ya. Besides, he started it. I especially liked Merlin's dream, and the resolution. Good balance overall. And on a personal note, had it not been for this story, I might never have really researched Genesis and started ordering Peter Gabriel-era CDs off amazon.com. (and therefore would never have been forced to update my Top Ten list of greatest albums ever, thanks to "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"). But that's not why I like this story, just an added bonus, like seeing tits in a movie when you weren't expecting any.

"Contingencies": Thailog's physical injuries never sat right with me, but at least mindwise, he's still the son-of-a-bitch we all know and love. Not that I minded, but this seemed like a different kind of Demona story from the one we'd been getting. But after a recent conversation I had with Bishansky, it fits. Probably one of my favorites from Season Three. I especially liked the ending. Talk about incentive to read the rest of Timedancer.

And I've got a few runners-up: "Two" (I've always been fascinated by the idea of the multiverse. Hell, I wrote a short story about them once. Who knows? Perhaps there is a timeline where things turned out differently for Demona. But then, if she stopped hating humanity, that wouldn't be interesting, would it?); "Disobedience" (Puck finally gets a chance to come out and play! I don't know who wrote the fight scenes between him and Garlon, but great job capturing that trickster spirit. Plus, great job incorporating one of the better elements from a TGC episode); "History's Forgotten" (mostly for the ending. One gets the sense that maybe Umbriel wasn't wasting his time trying to find good in Madoc); "The Darkest Hour" (shit hits the fan and then some. A little confusing moving between locations at times, but still, a hell of a fun ride); "Re-Emergence" (heeeeeere's Thailog. And oh, look. I was starting to wonder what had happened to the Demona we knew and loved, but she hasn't gone anywhere. What a relief); "Offers" (some surprising character moments here, and others not too surprising); "Things Fall Apart" (So there is still a gargoyle hate group in some form. Phew! Ooh, I hope this comes back in Season 4.).

And I haven't finished any of the other series, but I'll hopefully have a list for Pendragon soon.

[Harvester]It's funny. I've been watching the HBO miniseries "Rome," and in the first episode, there was a ruckus about Caesar's standard being stolen, and Caesar being geniunely worried that his legion would desert him unless it was found. Basically what I'm wondering is: is the spirit in the story based upon an actual spirit that the Romans believed in, or something close to it?[/Harvester]

IIRC, the answer is yes, although I can't find a reliable source for confirmation. The romans did certainly believe in different "minor gods" that protected the households, such as the Lares and Penates, and the Legion Eagles were considered a major symbol of both the spirit and the honour of the legion. When the germans captured three Eagles after the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, it was a major blow that decided the romans to set their border in the Rhine. I think that they even sent a large expedition just to recover those eagles.

Cheers for the review, Harvester. Most of the legwork of the story was done by Nicodemus in the outline. Sometimes the outlines are more of a joint effort on the list, but that wasn't the case with this one. I still had a blast on it though, especially trying to find a lot of humour in the story. Writing a few real-world places I'd actually visited (like the museum) was fun too. As for wrapping things up, we didn't know at this point it would be the last season, but we did put a big effort into tying up the outstanding threads of the whole series in the last third of the season, and especially in the finale.

Harvester: [I'm almost halfway through the season and I'm starting to get the sense that there are some threads that could have been continued upon. But I remember Todd saying that the Pendragon series ended with a bang.] If it's not too much trouble, can you list up the plot threads that you think ought to be touched on but haven't been by the end of Pen 4 (once you get there)? I'm trying to keep of such things for possible inclusion in future stories.

HARVESTER - Actually, the person whom you'll really want to ask about the mythical background of the Roman guardian spirit would be Nicodemus, since he was the one who suggested the idea (and the core concept of "Rome Eternal"), but unfortunately he doesn't come around here any more.

While this episode belonged mainly to the Banshee and the Roman guardian spirit, the parts that really stand out to me the most are where Arthur and Mary are talking at the museum, and where Mary retrieves Excalibur from the stone wall that it was embedded in. While I probably shouldn't be saying this, those two scenes are going to feel all the more significant a few episodes further along.

Spen: Are you a Jehovah's Witness? Just curious.

This is probably more for Ed than for Todd, since Ed wrote it, but I recently finished reading "Rome Eternal." It's funny. I've been watching the HBO miniseries "Rome," and in the first episode, there was a ruckus about Caesar's standard being stolen, and Caesar being geniunely worried that his legion would desert him unless it was found. Basically what I'm wondering is: is the spirit in the story based upon an actual spirit that the Romans believed in, or something close to it?

Anyway, one of the dangers of the Gargoyles universe (both in the canon series and the ficverse) is that the whole "fish out of water" thing (spirits, gargoyles, or what have you missing out on many centuries of change and suddenly being thrust back into a world that makes no sense) has a danger of wearing thin, unless it's treated well. But I enjoyed reading about this spirit's reaction to the world, also because I'm fascinated by Greco-Roman culture. In this one, the history was definitely incorporated into the action better than it was for most of Season One (not that I didn't like reading about the history, but there were moments in a lot of Season One when it ran the risk of detracting from present-day action). I especially liked the spirit's belief that most of Europe is still populated by uncivilized barbarians. He still regards both Britons and the Irish with the same scorn. A lot of the best moments came when he was talking down to Arthur, and Arthur trying his best to put up with it.

It also looks like Lucius is starting to become a little unglued. I noticed that it wasn't so much his words that swayed the rest of the Minions, but rather Char telling them that they all had possible prison sentences hanging over their heads. The spirit didn't even want to willingly help him. After this failed attempt, I'm wondering how much longer it will be before even Eddie and Char finally start to seriously consider deserting.

Finally, we see a little development on the Banshee's part. I had never stopped to consider the lack of conscience among most of the Third Race, but it is there (I mean, Jesus Christ, Puck plunged Goliath into a nightmare in which he saw just about everyone he cared about get killed, just so Puck could get him to hand over the Phoenix Gate!). I had been wondering where the Banshee was hiding herself (well, in her human form), and am glad she got another story. I like the way the lesson came reluctantly to her. She got a taste of what she had done to the spirit, and even after they'd switched places again in the cell, her first impulse is to leave the spirit in the stone. We don't think she learns something, but then she surprises us at the end.

I'm almost halfway through the season and I'm starting to get the sense that there are some threads that could have been continued upon. But I remember Todd saying that the Pendragon series ended with a bang. So I'm intrigued.

And Spen had a great idea last week. I haven't forgotten. I will post my Top Five very shortly (though I don't know how accurate it will be; the only series I've read in its entirety is Gargoyles. Still, I want to give my two cents).

The Top Ten List : Well, here's how I'm doing this for anyone who's curious: I'm ignoring the "admins don't count" rule, (mainly because there's no definate date as to when that rule stopped applying) and, if someone uses a diferent name as a joke, and makes it into the Top Ten,(example: Coyote the Bando and Jimbo Marsh, Spike and George Harrison, etc.) I still count along with their regular name. If someone posts as (for example) Fire Storm and Lady Mystic, Coyote and Ravyn, etc. they both count as having been in the Top Ten. Long-term multible personalities are listed seperatly (example: Doug and Kit, Green Baron and Reverand Attila).

Forgive me for being a complete and utter idiot, but what the frell is AMGC?

Hungry Shadows part three is coming? Horay!

Halloween was as bad as usual. You'd think that with all the blinds closed, all the lights off (including that one above the kitchen sink that I never turn off (and for obvious resons. The frelling thing took 22 tries for me to get it back on)). Also there's the big sign on the door that says "no trick-or-treaters", that they would get the hint that I'm not celebrating Halloween and they're wasting their time coming over. And yet, the idiots *still* ring the doorbell all frelling night. Do I have to start putting land mines in the sidewalk? You'd think that after all these years they'd start to get the hint.

********************************
I finally finished in my "Broken Mirror" Fanfic saga. And I'm glad that I finished it, because it began to went on my nerves. So finally the action return to New York.
"The Gathering, Part I" is now out. It will be greatly altered, especially since I will re-write it as a three-parter, to improve especially on the often as hasted seen first part.

Now my saga will gather speed! Stay tuned for more soon!
**********************************
(advertisement end)

That said, I see that at the moment, the CR seems to be not so well visited, but maybe that will change. Could one reason be the proximty to October 31st?

That AMGC is back on the road is good. The condition from a month ago was really bad. Good that this is over, and hope that people will return to it now that everything works again.
And by the way. The new sub-pages are nicely drawn.... ;)

So far things from me. I think it won't be long before I again will make shemless advertisement for my new works. I hope that won't offend you here.

I was just reading Juan's review of "Future Tense." I wonder if he ever figured out that a lot of what he had listed in the episode's "Bad Points" were intentional slip-ups designed to try to clue the viewer in on what was really happening (such as Puck not knowing the exact details of the spell Demona was under).

Lucky 14.

Hungry Shadows Part 3 update: it's currently up to 44 pages, and Gunjack is working on the last few scenes. However, it will not be up in what remains of tonight, since I have not finished beta-writing on either the "finished" 44 pages nor (obviously) the remaining ones that Gunjack is currently working on. And I can't pull an all-nighter to attempt to finish it because I am flying to Pittsburgh in the morning and if I don't get enough sleep, I'll throw up. And that will be before I even get on the plane.

So I'll stick with wishing you a Happy Halloween for now, and you who care can consider my treat to be the de-framing of the AMGC site, which Aaron shall no doubt be along shortly to explain the recent turnover in adminship of said contest. ; )
