Starsinger> I am in Ft Hood. I re-enlisted when I was in Southern Florida for three eyars, and I don't know what my next step is. I will volunteer for Iraq when the opportunity comes next year and then apply for OCS.

As I also told you and some others in the CR know, Hellcat ended the engagement with me, and I have no plans to even start dating again, but I don't feel ready yet....now if a lady wishes to meet with me without any emotional attachments, I'd consider :)

Carolynn Marie (Rumgirl)> I haven't seen you in ages. I see you've been to Paris (before it ignited) and Rome. I look forward to viisting both cities in the not too distant future. I also recommend Istanbul, Singapore, and Sofia as well....and Frankfurt which was near my station in Hanau, and a fairly ancient city, as it exited in the time of Charlemagne.

HoE> Not to bring up the Austrian Corporal, but part of his admiration is a sign of the cult of personality. Even after Nero's death he ahd admirers, and he was quite mad. Mao is a greater murderer than Hitler and Stalin combined, but he is still a hero to many Chinese. The same can be said about all the t-shirts of Che Guevera, a cult-hero among clueless stoners. Canadians still admire Pierre Trudeau, though he devalued their dollar, arrested fellow provincemen without trial, and such men like Jimmy Carter and Fidel Castro were his pall bearers..and those farts will hopefully join Trudau soon.

Of course, Lenin's tomb still stands and there are probably a few people who admire Josef Stalin, Pol Pot, Mussolinni, Robert Mugabe, Kim Jong Il, and Arafat, though one can never understand why.

The KKK is pretty much reduced to adopting highways...I'd be more worried about the Aryan Nation and extremist groups in the Pacific Northwest myself. Maybe the Quarrymen will be reduced to adopting highways and supporting human solidarity charities in 2198, as many hate groups hide behind charities and humanitarian missions to look more palatable.

Now on to SciFi, George Miller's A Canticle for Leibowitz described a post-nuclear war undoubtedly the result of the Cold War, though his secodn book shifted the Nuclear Holocaust to one occuring in the 21st century, merely shifting the Cold War to another possible conflict.

DPH> <<Or how some people didn't get that the confederate flag is equated with racism too often. I saw a truck with a confederate flag clearly visible in the back windshield of a truck. Furthermore, I can't find anything to be truly proud of in my Southern heritage. Southern hospitality came about because rich slave owners could afford to be generous to white visitors.>> Well, of ocurse the Confederate flag has a racist stench to it. My great great grandfather would be horrified to see ow it is used today.

The South was not as advanced as the rest of the nation. It was agrarian and feudal whil the North was going through the Industrial Revolution and a process of urbanization that put it a good two or three centuries ahead of the South.

As for Southern hospitality, it may not have th ebest origins, but why junk it over that. Politeness is a good thing, and now we can just include politness to more people.

Racism> The ultimate problem with racism or andy form of solidarityis that it puts the group above the individual and encourages us to think in terms of some irrelevant group. It took me a while to realzie the value of individualism and as I did, it was amazing to watch my faith dissapate and to fully reject the worship of a barefoot hippy who lived 2000 years ago. Until humans learn to put individualsim above group think, we always be plagued by groups like the KKK, Nazis, Communists, soldarity organziations, NDP, ideologues, fascists, hippies, and skin heads...and of course demagouges like Pat Buchanan and Jesse Jackson.

Spen> Sevarius Jr. graudate form law school and passed the bar in case you were curious.

HARVESTER - Though the difficulty of the Quarrymen becoming composed largely of criminals (as I've mentioned before) is that then it's no longer about "humans fear and hate what they do not understand" but "criminals fear and hate people who stop them from committing their crimes". Then again, a closer look at the series does suggest that the latter was just as much a factor behind the gargoyle massacres as the former; it was the Vikings, rather than local Scotsmen, who carried out the Wyvern Massacre, for example, and the looters who stole the Mayan Sun Amulet that killed most of the Guatemalan clan rather than the local farmers.

Todd: I think that was the subject of one of the CR discussions (can't remember if it was Station 8 or here). Criminals would definitely not be thrilled with the gargoyle mission, so I could see organized crime having a hand in keeping the Quarrymen going. And then of course, as you also pointed out, there's the religious right. With their tails and wings (not to mention that they can only be active at night), gargoyles could be seen as demons by some of those nuts that somehow manage to get the funds to broadcast on TV.

HARVESTER - Regrettably true, but I would like to see some explanation as to how the Quarrymen would rationalize their hatred of the gargoyles after discovering the truth about them. After all, if they know that the gargoyles are protecting the city, then they should also know that killing them would make things that much easier for the violent criminals whom the gargoyles are thwarting (unless the Quarrymen are violent criminals and want the gargoyles out of the way precisely for that reason). Perhaps, of course, they think that the gargoyles are demons who are pretending to be noble protectors to mislead the people of New York down the road to Hell. Or maybe they're so blinded by their xenophobia that they just don't care.

According to Greg's Master Plan, the Quarrymen were still around in 2198. I was just hypothesizing on why it is that hate groups linger. Despite the atrocities committed under his dictatorship, there are still people today who regard Hitler as a great man. By that logic, even after the gargoyles were revealed to be protectors of the innocent, it's not inconceivable that there'd still be enough of a base to keep the Quarrymen (or some similar anti-gargoyle group) going in some form.

Todd: That fear of humans being replaced was actually the subject of a Philip K. Dick story called "The Golden Man." The curious thing about Dick's novella, though, is that the mutants were created through the aftermath of a war with the Soviet Union. The fear that homo sapiens might be replaced is still there, but rather than it seeming like a change brought on through evolution, man did it to himself. I sometimes wonder how Dick's writing might have changed if he'd lived to see the Iron Curtain fall.

HARVESTER and TODD: I think the additional factor (and pardon me if this has already been said and I missed it) is that mutants blend in so well that you never know who they could be. After the movies debuted my dad, who's a run of the mill mechanic who's never been a comic geek in his entire life, made an interesting comparison of the "mutant menace" to the McCarthy era, when the feared party (mutants or communists) looked like regular people who could be your neighbor, for all you know. Gargoyles are a pretty blatant "them" for all humans to rally against, especially when as far as the canon Gargoyles universe is concerned only the Manhattan clan is in the limelight, whereas mutants have become a global phenomena. But it's very diconcerting when a possible ally could actually be the perceived enemy. Paranoia makes people dumb.

I was particularly struck by the Canmore kid's reaction when they realized that Demona and Dominique Destine were one and the same, and John's assertion that the gargoyles just possibly transform into humans, walk out into broad daylight, and escape all detection. The idea that the enemy could remain hidden in the middle of society was absolutely unnerving, and it's a privilege that many mutants enjoy (those that don't have blatant physical abnormalities).

I scanned in drawings of mine last week, if anyone's interested in Gargoyles sketches. One of my own characters, Laurie Hawke, makes an appearance or two. Thought I'd share, and I'm always interested to see what other people have been drawing, if anyone's got anything available :)

The current deconstructor of the tgs website asked me to pass this information along with regards to the tgs theme songs. On http://tgs.gargoyles-fans.org/themes.html , you have links to zip files containing the theme songs. You need to download the zip file to your local pc. Then, on your local pc, unzip the file in order to extract the theme song. It's as simple as that.

Harvester : "it's not archived yet, but I think Spen has probably got it saved)." Yep, I certainly do. The reson I'm saving them by the way, is that I'm trying to personally make sure that we will never have another week in the archive that is either missing or incomplete.

John P. : Married in real life.

Guandalug : Remember that I said a few months ago that I'd be trying to find more errors in the GFA? Well, I had some extra time on my hands last night, so I checked all of Doug Elder's work (mainly becouse with his habit of anouncing whenever a new fic came out, it would be the easiest to check) A lot of these errors were caused due to re-posts, so I'm not sure if you'd want to change them or not, but here they all are:

After the Flood - Aired on 08/08/98 (true, a very minor change, but it's still an inaccuracy).

Masterpiece - Aired on 10/04/98.

Clash of the New Olympians - Aired on 11/08/98.

Through the Ages - Aired on 12/02/98.

Brooklyn at Camelot - Originally aired on 12/16/98.

Inheritance - Aired on 01/14/99 (again, very minor change).

Vengeance - Aired on 03/10/99 (fairly minor change).

Dragon's Game - Aired on 05/17/99.

Voyage - Aired on 07/24/99.

Inner Demons Part 2 - Aired on 12/18/99 (once again, a ridiculessly minor change).

This may be just my computer, but on "To Be Immortal" it says that part six aired first, and part one aired last.

The Fall of Nightstone - It's not really worth it to change anything since the story isn't there, but it originally aired sometime between late September-early November '97.

TGS site maintainer : Apprerantly, the TGS theme songs don't load at all with Mozilla. On IE, all but the Timedancer Future Tense mix work (of course, I already told you about that one not working).

HARVESTER - Good point about racism, and how it defies logic. I do think, mind you, that the situation with the gargoyles will be different from the way that it is with mutants in the X-Men Universe. I'm not an expert on the latter, but from what I've read about it, I've found myself suspecting that the real reason why humans fear mutants isn't just that they've got super-powers or that "they're different from us". The real fear, I suspect (at least, that's how I'd portray it if I were to write X-Men stories) is that humanity is being replaced by mutants, that with each succeeding year, more and more babies will be born with the mutant gene and fewer and fewer babies will be "normal humans", until at last, there'll be only mutants left. The particularly interesting factor in this is that it means that the mutants don't have to fight a war to wipe out humanity; they only have to keep on being born, as the ratio of mutant to human births shifts increasingly in favor of the former. And all the Sentinels and Legacy Viruses in the world can't do a thing against it. The most that they can do is slow it down.

At least gargoyles, as a non-human species that can't even be that close to humans biologically (since they lay eggs and turn to stone in the daytime), don't pose that seeming "threat".

As for Michael, Jeffrey High, the original head of "Pendragon" (who lasted less than a season), was the one who came up with that name, having the Archangel Michael in mind, yes, but I don't know if he was thinking of the Avalon clan when he did. The London clan has wound up, of course, with a very eclectic group of names, stemming from Shakespeare, Dickens, the Chronicles of Narnia, and Harry Potter, among others. (Christi Smith Hayden can provide you with much of the details, since she came up with a lot of the names.)

*starts feeding the spammer feet-first into a wood-chipper, but its gets stuck halfway. Sticks duct-tape over its mouth so the screaming won't annoy him while he posts.*

This is actually going back two weeks ago, to something Todd said about why there might be a problem with gargoyle hate groups in the TGS Ficverse after people learned what their true nature was (it's not archived yet, but I think Spen has probably got it saved).

That's a good point, but the problem I have with it is that there will always be a percentage of the population that feels threatened by something different. If you look in the Marvel Comics universe, the X-Men are protectors, but that doesn't stop people from hating them. Or in real life, skin color by no means defines character, but that hasn't stopped the KKK from surviving since the 19th Century. Even though it was established that gargoyles are protectors, they still have the capacity in them to commit both good and evil, and the power to choose. There might not be as many gargoyles as Iago and Demona (well, Demona is quite unique, but what I am referring to is gargoyles with the capacity and will to do evil), but there is still evil among gargoyle-kind. That might help to contribute to the uncertainty of some people (coupled by the fact that gargoyles are different in appearance) to keep some sort of anti-gargoyle group going.

And this is just a general Pendragon question, not sure who it should be directed to: is Michael's name influenced by the fact that the leader of the Avalon Clan is also named after an archangel?

*rips the duct-tape off the Spammer's mouth none-too-gently, and gives the chipper a kick, which starts back up and finishes turning the Spammer into mulch.
